Part 1: An Infinite Spring

April

The first time he saw her, she stumbled over a wheelchair and almost fell over the patient, before apologizing profusely. Her melodic voice, the stethoscope hanging over her white coat, her musical note bracelet with an infinity charm and her beautiful smile were etched forever into his memories.

Abhi was sitting on the stairs with his head in his hands, thinking through the latest news he heard from Nishita. How his dad was torturing his mom in new ways, and get how his mom refuses to fight back or leave him due to prestige. Her heard footsteps and saw someone put a dark chocolate bar in front of his face, it was his favorite kind. “Dark Chocolate has great distressing properties you know, excellent for your mood, and great flavor as well. This should help with whatever is troubling you”, she smiled as she saw him smile back. The kind hearted, but still khadoos cardiac surgeon had become her friend, even though they worked separately as she was a pediatric resident. They bonded over a pediatric cardiac case and she saw how good he was with kids. She remembered asking him, “Did you ever think about also pediatric cardiology, you’re so good with kids!” He smiled and told her, “Yes, I did. I’m happy to help occasionally but it’s unsettling to see kids in pain, I rather stay away from that”. She knew he’d be a great father then! He’d even gone out of his way to help her whenever she asked him, quizzed her during her exams and became a true support system.

He smiled as he took the chocolate and split it in half and gave the other half to her. “Thanks, friend”, she giggled. “You know, it’s not good to befriend a senior doctor, we aren’t exactly the nicest creatures around”, he teased. Akshu, as he nicknamed her, had touched him beyond measure as she took the effort to find something to soothe his aching heart. Her kindest of gestures brought random bursts of happiness to him. She was his own dose of sunshine.

“Oh, I know! Fire breathing dragons, making us residents run around like chickens, but it’s okay. I befriended a kind unicorn”, she said as she munched on the bar. “Unicorn?”. “That’s what they call rare finds”, she told him. “You know, when I’m stressed I like using music as a medium. I know CDs are old fashioned, but check this person out, you may like their voice”, she handed him a cover that said “Infinity Tara”. “Thanks so much Akshu”, he said squeezing her hand.

A week later, as they grabbed coffee he asked her, “I finally found a CD player and tried the sound. You were right, it’s so soothing. I use it to sleep everyday now”, he said as her face lit up. “Really, you liked her, that much?”. He nodded, “Yes, I really did, there’s magic in that voice. Classical and fused mix. I didn’t know Independent artists were that good these days, what’s her name? I couldn’t find it on the CD”. Akshara looked down while she fumbled, “Well.. umm… the thing is.. in med school… I used to get really stressed… so I used to sing and one of my friend’s brother does music records.. so they kinda forced to me to make this… so that singer would be me…”, she finished and looked up to see her reaction. His mouth was hanging, “Why didn’t you tell me? Do you realize how good you are? You deserve more mainstream”. She was touched, “Honestly, I’m honored but music is my hobby, I love being a doctor”.

He smiled at her, “so now that I know how good you are, I’ll have to take back my offer. Instead of coffee for the next study session, you have to sing for me. Does that sound good?”

Her mouth was hanging, this guy never fails to surprise her. From first offering to help her study to this, but never the less she adored their friendship and nodded.

“Akshu, you will get through this, losing your first patient isn’t easy, but you did everything you could. You have to go tell the family, now. You can do this, you’re strong enough, and I’ll be right by your side.” Her arms tightened around him as she sobbed. He hugged harder, smoothing her hair, his heart breaking with her every tear. Unaware, that this pediatric resident, who worked on the floor below him, had claimed his heart forever.

December

“Abhi, are you listening to me? I wanted your opinion on if I need to send this baby to you for a cardiology consult.” She found him staring intensely at her, as he often did these days, whenever they bumped into each other. His intense stare made her heartbeat race and a blush formed on her face. What was happening to her? No, Akshu, she thought to herself. He’s your friend! Your very kind, handsome, always caring and the kind you always want to spend time with, but still he’s only your friend, nothing more,she reminded herself. Abhi was forced out of his admiring sessions, which he had more often that not, now that he realized how much he loved her. “Yes, send the child over, I’ll do a checkup”, he said as he smiled and walked away, cursing his pager.

February

It was storming outside as they all took refuse under the shed. They’d come over to a village for a medical camp, but due to a terrible storm, they had to stop and go over to the nearest shelter they could find. Suddenly, she reaped, “Where’s Dr. birla?” . They realized he was missing and they started to panic as the situation was really bad outside. “Where is he?”, she screamed as she tried his phone and realized there was no signal. “Let’s go try to find him, Akshita please stop, you coming with us won’t help the situation.” Dr.Neil, Abhi’a cousin and Akshara’s fellow resident said. An hour later when they returned without finding him, she was losing it. “What do you mean, he’s not there? How could you come back without finding him? He’s your brother!”, she screamed before she ran out ignoring protesting screams. As she ran out, she almost fell over a branch when a pair of arms caught her.

“Have you lost your mind? What the bell are you doing out here?”, he screamed clutching her closer. She tightened her arms around him and screamed back. “What am I doing? What the hell were you doing? No one could find you, do you know how worried I was? It’s purring in the middle of the forest and you’re missing. How could you do this to me?”, she banged his chest. “And you think running out to save me was the best idea?”, he screamed over the pouring rain thundering over them. He went to grab the remaining patients but they got lost, so they took a detour. When the camp told them Akshita had gone out to search for him, he was furious beyond measure. Luckily, he found her nearby!

“What if something happened to you!!?”, he screamed at her! “And, what if something happened to YOU???”, she yelled back. “I can’t breathe… I couldn’t breathe thinking something happened to you out there… I can’t even think if you had…”, she started shaking and sobbing uncontrollably, clutching him closer. And in that moment, he realized that she loved him too, just as much as he loved her.

He smiled and kept them walking to the closest shelter they could find. She was still holding onto him, still a little shaken. He realeased her, she held on closer. “Akshu, look at me!”, he tiled her chin up. “I’m okay, you’re fine. We’ll be fine”, he stared into her tearing eyes. “Don’t ever leave me like that again! Promise me”, she demanded, still sobbing. “And why don’t you want me to leave you?”, he asked. “Because.. I.. because I…”, she stared back at him in wonder… almost as if she just solved a really hard chemistry problem or a difficult case. She, Dr. Akshu, pediatric resident, second year has followed madly in love with Dr.Abhi, the khadoos but caring cardiatric surgeon. He stared at her, smiling as he realized she had finally figured it out. “Because, I love you. I love you, now and always, until infinity”, she teared up. He wiped her tears, his heart singing in happiness, “As I love you to Infinity and beyond”, he tapped his forehead onto hers and held her face. “Buzz Lightyear”, she giggled. “Yes, the movie you made me watch finally made its way into our love story”, he said as he stared into her eyes, closed the distance and kissed her.

“Please sing for me”, he requested in between his kisses. “Pita ties naina lage Re….”, she continued as they remained blissfully happy.

Part 2: Promises of Infinity

July

“Look, you guys tried, they are never going to agree. You cannot put your life on hold for them. Trust me, go life your life, maybe someday they will realize they were wrong and things will become better. You’ll always still have me”, Neil was telling both of them as they sat in Abhi’s cabin. Apparently both their families were business rivals, who hated that their children became doctors instead of running their own companies. Once they found out that their kids wanted to get married, they vehemently opposed and no amount of convincing had worked. So, Neil the said cousin who was also part of the family couldn’t think of another way. He found the couple immersed in thought, staring at each other and left to give them privacy.

“Abhi”, she cupped his face. “Akshu”, he said closing his eyes, and baking in her warmth. “I can’t live without Abhi”, she watched as he opened his eyes and stared at her with all the love in the world.” He hugged her, “I can’t breathe without you either”, he’s responded. “So, we’re doing this then?”, she ran her fingers over his scalp to relax him. “Yes. A court marriage might be the simplest. We can get Neil and maybe you can ask your friend Arohi as a witness”, he said, thinking logistics through. “Jee Nahi!”, she pulled back. “I want the full rituals and ceremony, even if we have to do it with just Neil and Arohi”, she said. “Yes, Boss. Any other demands?”, he smiled. “Yes! You will wear a sherwani, don’t frown! I will wear a pink lehenga. We’ll get married on a beach at the sunset and I want an infinity mangal sutra!”, she said fingering the infinity ring he gave her. “Whatever, you wish you will get!”, he said, pulling her closer.

September

She stared into the ocean, as she saw the faint of blue start to appear in the sky from the balcony of her room. The breeze was wonderful and the resort was a cozy hut located right in front of the ocean.

She turned to look at her 3 day old husband sprawled over the bed, deep asleep. She sat beside him as she ran her fingers through his hair, and her heart burst as he smiled in his sleep. He looked so exhausted and she blushed once she realized why. They hadn’t slept much as their passions kept them up all night long, and the beautiful island kept them intrigued during the day.

Their wedding was so beautiful, Neil and Arohi flew in with them and left after the wedding. She remembered singing for him on their wedding night as they ate dinner under the stars. They had a few more days before they headed back to the villa he set up for them, to start a new life together. Just then, he grabbed her hand and pulled her over him. “Can’t stay away from me, can you?”, he raised his eyebrows as he smirked. She blushed as she said, “So what if I can’t? It’s my own husband!”. “Acha Ji”. “Ha Ji!”, she giggled as he pulled her closer, taking her into another ecstasy filled with love.

October

“Abhi, look our wedding picture came back, this looks so pretty! I’m putting it above our bed”, she chirped as she saw him smiling while he fixed the new cupboard. Due to their busy schedules, they still found things they had to do to set up their home. The two story house was beautiful, luxurious, yet cozy. It had a pool, and a gym. It was bought with both of their hard earned money. “Acha, tell me. What do you want to do for dinner?”, Abhi asked her. She rolled her eyes, “You and food, and your never ending hunger”, she giggled as he frowned. “Madam, don’t make fun of my hunger for food. I don’t see you complaining about my hunger for other things you enjoy”, he teasingly smiled and winked. “Hawww, shut up!”, she blushed furiously! “You know, I don’t mind satisfying that hunger right now, want to help?”, he said picking her up in his arms. “Wait, no no no! Not again! We have to focus and finish setting up the house today, we always start and then…, not today though!”, she said blushing her way through. He kissed her forehead, “tonight, then“, he kissed her and set her back down.

“But, we haven’t decided dinner yet.” “Arre, I can cook right? Why go out today?”, she put her brilliant suggestion forward. He sighed and walked up to her. Holding her face in his hands, he said, “Akshu, I love you, with all my heart and soul. But sweetheart, my stomach can’t take it when you cook, so please don’t do it”, he said before cracking up and making her punch him. “You know, you don’t sing as much these days, am I not loving you enough to inspire your songs?”, he gathered her close. “No no, your love is more than infinity, I just haven’t had time, here I’ll sing this new one I’m working on for you”, and she continued as she picked her up and danced with her.

November

The alarm buzzed loudly, waking them up. They were cozy under the covers, wrapped up in each other’s arms. Grateful to have found time to fall asleep, before the blasted alarm disturbed them. Abhi move his arm from her bare waist and shut the alarm off before snuggling up to her. “Abhi”, she asked with her eyes closed. “Hmm”. “We have to get up”. “I don’t want to”, his arms tightened around her.

Ugh, she opened her eyes. His arms were heaven on earth, there was nothing like it, she would lie there for the rest of her life if she could. “Abhi, utto na”, she patted his cheek as she checked the state of their room. They were able to finally get a night together after 2 weeks of overloaded schedules. Last night’s clothes were sprawled around and they couldn’t get enough of each other. She teared up at the thought of having to go like this for another week.

“Abhi”, she groaned sleepily as he just hmmed and fell back asleep. She patted his cheek again. “Akshu, let’s just quit our jobs and find something else to do”, he mumbled, eyes still closed and arms pulling his wife closer to his chest. “Acha, what would we do?”, she asked, amused. “I don’t know. You could become a music teacher. I could start a business with your music albums. We’d be home in time and be able to sleep like this every day”, he smiled in his sleep. She giggled. “Acha Ji. And what about our patients, especially the ones who don’t want anyone but Dr.Birla in the country?”. He frowned, “I’ll tell them I like to sleep with my wife in my arms everyday and refer them to another doctor”, she smiled. She hit him on his chest. “Ow, I meant falling asleep, like this with you”, he grumbled. “Sure, that’s exactly what you meant!”, she giggled before getting up and pulling him out of bed.

March

“Abhi, close your eyes and make a wish”, she said excitedly. as she covered his eyes. “But Akshu, it’s a shooting star—!” “ Ugh Just, do it”, she said while she made her own.

“Dear Shooting Star, please keep my Abhi happy, healthy and successful. And May we be happy together till infinity.”

“Dear decaying meteor, if you grant wishes, please make sure my Akshu gets whatever she wants and keep her happy with me forever”

“Done, can I open my eyes now”, he asked her. “Ugh, so impatient, yes you can!”, she said as her feet dangled off. They were sitting on the terrace and eating dinner when she saw a shooting star.

“Okay, open your mouth”, he demanded as Akshu shook her head. “Akshu, no naatak, chup chap khaalo. I won’t leave until I feed you with my own hands”, he frowned as he fed her. “I can’t believe you skipped your meals again this week. You are a doctor, you have to take care of yourself”, he scolded her. She forwarded a piece towards his mouth and he frowned. “I won’t eat, if you want eat, open up”, she said while he let her feed her before shaking his head.

Later, as they lounged on their bed, wrapped in each other’s arms while Abhi browsed through news channels. “Abhi”, she tugged at his shirt. He looked down at her, “Do you think our families will forgive us?”. He sighed and turned off the TV. “I mean it’s been seven months, they don’t respond to our calls. Even Neil couldn’t get through”, she continued looking down while she played with his shirt. He held her cheek and made her look up, “I don’t need anyone else if I have you. I thought Maa would understand but she sided with her husband and didn’t even talk to me. I can’t go through that Akshu, not again”, he sighed. She hugged him deeply. “It’s okay, someday they might understand us. Even Bade Papa, Mimi and Kairav Bhaiya refuse to talk to me. The others completely blocked me. This rival business is so stupid, I’m so glad we live in another city, else people would know whose families we belong to! Well except that news article awhile ago but people probably forgot” , she smiled.

“You’re my world now, Akshu. That’s all I need. Don’t ever leave me”, he said kissing her forehead. “Never, not even when you try to push me away from the kitchen so that I don’t cook”, she smiled trying to light up the mood. He laughed his rich happy laugh, the one she loved and cherished the most.
