Chapter 11

Mahima and Abhimanyu walked toward Akshara’s room and as Abhi was opening the door, Mahima stopped him.

“Before we go in, I need to discuss a few things with you. I know you love Akshara….no, don’t say anything. I’ve known for a long time now. But please Abhimanyu, you have to control your emotions and be strong for her. More than any medications, she needs a good support system and from what I know about her situation, only you can be that for her. So no matter how hard it might be for you to see Akshara in such a state, step outside of the room if you need to but please in front of her, be strong.”

Abhi nodded. “But Tayi-ji. I’m not understanding what exactly happened?”

Mahima told Abhi about what she saw when she got to Goenka Villa and what was on Akshu’s reports. “Honestly, it seems like Akshara is under a lot of stress and has been for a long time. She shows signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which has not been dealt with. More than anything physical, I’m more worried about her mental health. To have panic attacks that make her lose consciousness? That’s not good. Has she ever mentioned to you about having anxiety?”

“No. She never talks about anything to do with herself but I have seen her have a mild anxiety attack before. She said it was just a headache when I asked her about it.” Abhi told Mahima as he remembered the drive they went on on the day of the puja.

“The family said she’s been having panic attacks since she was little?” Mahima had so many questions when it came to Akshara’s family. She had a hard time understanding them. “You will think they would have gotten her help sooner.”

“Umm.” It was painful for Abhimanyu to think about how Akshu has been silently dealing with this for years. “I understand if the rest of the family won’t know how to deal with this but I expect at least Aarohi being a doctor to know better.”

“Aarohi!” Mahima let out a bitter laugh. “Abhimanyu, Akshara kal se dard main tadap rahi thi and Aarohi didn’t do anything and today? She’s been walking around the hospital without a care not once checking on her sister. Aarohi ko toh main baad mein dekh loongi. Behn nahi toh Doctor hone ke naate she should have done her duty when she saw a patient.”

Abhimanyu took a deep breath. He will deal with Aarohi later. Now he only wanted to focus on Akshu. “Tayi-ji, I’m ready to see her.” Mahima nodded and opened the door to Akshu’s room.

Abhimanyu silently went and sat on the chair next to Akshu’s bed. Seeing her in such condition made his heart break in a thousand pieces but he controlled his emotions. Mahima left the room to give him privacy.

“Abhi. Tum aa gaye?” Akshu’s eyes were still closed.

“Akshu?”

Akshara opened her eyes and gave him a small smile. Abhi never thought Akshu’s smile can ever cause him any pain but the sadness behind that smile was a little too much for him to bear.

“Hi Abhi.”

“Hiiii. Akshu how are you feeling now?”

“I am fine. I just had a bad headache and they put me in this hospital.” She said rolling her eyes.

Just a headache. Abhimanyu shook his head. “Akshu, your reports say…..”

“Hey, Abhi?” Akshu cut him off. “Can I ask you something?”

“Anything.”

“Do you consider me your friend? Main tumhari dost hoon na?”

“What? Tum iss duniya mein meri sab se achi dost ho.”

Akshu smiled. “Toh bas. Please be my friend only. Doctors yahan aur bhi hain magar you are my only friend here.”

Abhi nodded. “So as your friend, can I say something?”

“Okay.”

“Akshu can you please promise me if you ever feel unwell again, can you come to me? You can call me anytime day or night. You don’t need to share with me anything if you don’t want to. We can talk about other things like we always do or we can go for a drive or watch a movie or just sit silently. Whatever you want. And when you are ready to share anything with me, I will always be here to listen and I promise you that nothing you can ever tell me and nothing you can ever do will change how I feel about you. You are not alone, Akshu. I am here.”

Akshu was staring straight ahead with a blank look.

“Akshu tum sun rahi ho na? Can you please promise me?”

Akshu nodded.

“Good.” Abhimanyu smiled. He knew he still had a long way to go before he can break the wall around Akshu but he was willing to wait. No matter how long it took. What is hurting you so badly? Please tell me.

“You didn’t tell me how your conference was.” Akshu changed the subject. Abhimanyu smiled. Akshu hated talking about herself.

“Pretty boring. My presentation was the best one if I say so myself.” Abhimanyu grinned.

“Ohh. So humble you are. What was it about?”

“5 ways Meethi Dana can cure heart disease.”

It took Akshu a second to get Abhi’s joke. She stared at him and then bursted out laughing. A big genuine laugh.

Mahima was watching them from the window. She smiled. Her patient was now in the care of the only person she needed. Mahima left to go tend to her other patients.

“Are you serious? This is cheating.” Abhimanyu said annoyed.

“That’s what all losers say.” Akshu laughed.

“Akshu there’s no way you can win 5 times in a row.”

“Dr. Abhimanyu Birla. You probably don’t know but Akshara Goenka has never lost a game of Ludo in her life.” Akshu said proudly.

“Akshu Yaar I am a surgeon and a damn good one! No way I can lose a game of Ludo.” Abhimanyu pretended to be upset. Seeing Akshu laughing without a worry was worth losing a game of Ludo for. Except he really was awful at this game or Akshu really was that good?

“You might be a surgeon but I happen to be the best Ludo player.” Akshu said laughing, “Papa used to call me the Ludo Queen. I always won when I used to play with Papa, Aaru, and Sirat M….” Akshu stopped. You killed my mother! Akshu remembered Aarohi’s words.

Abhimanyu watched as Akshu froze and the smile from her face disappeared. She was going to that dark space again.

“Akshu! I demand another game!” He said louder than he needed to. He won’t let her get lost in her thoughts.

“Fine! Get ready to lose again.”

Manjiri was getting worried. Abhimanyu went straight to the hospital after returning from Delhi the previous day and didn’t come home yet. What if he falls ill from working so much? Just then she saw her sister come home.

“Didi! Abhi nahi aaya? Kitna kaam karega mera beta? Aap leh aati apney saath Abhi ko.” Manjiri cried.

“Manjiri relax. Bacha nahi hai woh. Aur hospital mein woh bohat khush hai. Don’t worry he’s fine.” Mahima shook her head. Her sister was too emotional for her own good.

“Didi, he hasn’t come home since he came back home from Delhi. He must be exhausted working so hard.”

Mahima laughed. “Tumhara beta Hospital mein kaam nahi kar raha. Wahan woh Ludo khel raha hai.”

“LUDO? Bhai hospital Ludo khelne jahta hai?” Neil came from the kitchen.

“Haan aaj kal kaam se ziyada Abhimanyu ko Ludo khelna hai.”

“Main kuch nahi samjhi, Didi.” Manjiri asked all confused.

“Tayi-ji. So what’s her name?” Neil asked smiling.

Mahima laughed. “Akshara.”

“Meri toh kuch samajh mein nahi aa raha. Kaun Akshara? Kya Ludo?”

“Maa! Bhai ko pyar ho gaya hai.” Neil laughed.

“Sach mein Manjiri tum apney beta ko samjhti nahi.”

“Pyar? Akshara hai kaun?”

“Akshara Goenka.”

“KYA? Uss Aarohi ki behn?” Neil asked shocked. Mahima nodded. “Bro ko Aur ladki nahi mili ke uss Chipkali ki behn se pyar hogaya usse?”

“Akshara bohat achi hai aur Abhimanyu bohat pyar karta hai usse se. Hadh se bhi ziyada.” Mahima chided Neil. “Abhi ke samne Akshu ke bare mein kuch mat kehna.” Neil nodded.

“Ab tumhe kya hogaya?” Mahima asked her sister who was standing there lost in thoughts.

“Didi kya main rishta le jahoon Akshara ka?”

“Bilkul nahi. Abhimanyu ko yeh fasla karne doh. Usse Akshara se baat karne doh pehle.” Mahima couldn’t believe her sister at times.

As Mahima walked away, Manjiri decided to talk to the Goenkas once. What could go wrong if Akshara was the girl Abhi loved? Shaadi karni hai toh why does it matter who talks to whom first?
