In Abhimanyu's intro, the last line says, "ek dhundla sa chehra hain jiski mujhe talash hain." That could be hinting towards the fact that they knew each other since childhood/fell in love and then lost touch...
I think he has everything a person would want from this world except real companionship (friendship, love, etc...).
And like Sarcy said, they must have met and bonded as a children but they lost touch. So I guess when he said "ek dhundla sa chehra hain jiski mujhe talash hain." she was like his true companion but they lost touch and he was looking for her??
