Part 6 (a)

Gayatri opened the door of their house. Akshara was standing outside. Gayatri smiled. Ever since, Naitik went through the football injury, Mohit, Rashmi, Shaurya and Akshara became very regular in the house. Even though none in the house had much problems with any of their coming over, Daddaji, in the beginning was quite irritated. But Bhabhima managed to convince him pretty quickly.

"Arey Akshara…aao na," Gayatri moved away from the door to let Akshara enter. "Kaisi ho beta?"

"Main thik hu aunty….aap sab kaise hai?"

"Hum bhi thik hai…Naitik se milne ayi thi…wo upar apne kamre main hai…tum jake betho…main chaye nashta lekar ati hu…thik hai?"

Akshara smiled at Gayatri and headed upstairs. In the beginning she was actually scared to come over here so frequently but Rashmi told her that no one would mind if she and Mohit would introduce her to the others…Mohit and Rashmi practically grew up in Naitik's house. Still, Akshara couldn't let go of her uneasiness. But that changed soon enough and by this time she was aware of that fact that she and Naitik were officially friends…a friendship which they found way back but acknowledged just recently...

Naitik was sitting on the bed, going through channels after channels. The doctors had told him it was a small injury and there was nothing major but still he had to sit through the bed for a whole of two weeks and it was still uncertain when he will get up. The door of his room opened and he looked up to see Akshara enter, dressed in a light blue salwar, with a bright smile which was directed towards him.

"Hi…ab kaise ho?" Akshara asked as she lightly pushed the door and entered the room.

"Dekh to rahi ho. Bed pe bait kar channels change karne ke elawa aur kuch nahi hai karne ke liye."

"Mohit araha hai. Kuch naye video games lekar. Mujhe usne phone kiya tha. Kuch der main anehi wala hoga. Phir bait ke khel lena. Uh vaise Naitik…main wo tumhare liye notes layi thi. Exams arahe hain aur tumne kafi sari classes' bhi miss kiya…so…"

Naitik chuckled a little. "Mujhe pata bhi nahi tha ke is chot se meri ek advantage bhi hai. Ab tumhare waje se wo bhi chali gayi."

Akshara frowned. "Main tumhari madat hi to kar rahi hu."

"Ha mujhe pata hain. Do..main baad main par lunga." Naitik took the notes and put them on the other side of his bed. "And thanks."

Akshara smiled at him. The door of his room opened and it was Mohit with some CDs on his hands. As Naitik and Mohit got busy in playing, Akshara left as she had to reach home quickly.

Naitik again beat Mohit easily in the game. Gayatri had brought snacks for the two and Mohit was now relishing them. Naitik often told him how he was a foodie but Mohit hardly cared.

"Naitik.."

"Bol…."

"Tu Akshara ko pasand karta hai na?"

Naitik looked at Mohit, surprised at his sudden question. "Tu ye kyu poonch raha hai?"

"Bata na…tu use pasand karta hai ya nahi?"

"Friend hai yaar…jaise tu hai, Rashmi hai…beech main kya lara hai."

"Beech me main kuch nahi lara….ye tu bhi acche se janta hai ke meri aur Rashmi ki baat alag hai."

"Mujhe nahi pata…" Naitik blurted out.

"To pata karle…" Mohit tapped Naitik on the shoulders.

Naitik was lying on his bed, going through what Mohit told him. He didn't really believe in anything Mohit told him. Actually, he never believed in high school romance. They never work and Naitik didn't want the first girl he would fall for wouldn't be his later. He wanted to fall in love with someone with whom he knew he could spend the rest of his life with, without hesitation. He closed his eyes and an image of a smiling Akshara came to his mind. He immediately opened his eyes.

"Main uske bare main kyu soch raha hu?" He sat up. All the moments he spent with Akshara, their first dance, his birthday party and the recent days he spent with her were all afresh of his mind.

"Was this love? Thinking about them when you are not supposed to? Smiling at whatever she does like an idiot? Or trying to find out her opinion in something when her opinion didn't matter at all? Or was it just attraction?"

Within a week, the doctors declared Naitik fully fit and fine. He had to attend the University lectures as their second semester was about to close. Akshara had given her all the notes of all the previous classes in writing, which confused him. If he was in Akshara's place, he would just print then. There weren't not much writing anyway, it was usually all the boring lectures that one has to go through in University. But Akshara loved writing and she continued with that. Akshara didn't know what she wanted to become when she will pass out of University but Akshara had a fondness for literature and she knew it deep down, possibly she will become a writer or maybe a homemaker.

Later the next day, Akshara was talking to Varsha in the corridor. Varsha was telling her about her cousin who had changed his University few days, when exams were so near.

"Nahi Varsha mujhe na ye idea ajeeb laga. Koi insaan University ke exams ke sirf kuch din pehle kyu join karega."

"Bohat sare reasons ho sakte hai," a male voice from behind answered her.

Akshara and Varsha turned around. "Rituraj…" the word escaped from Akshara.

Part 6 (b)

Akshara was staring blankly at her ex-friend. Rituraj smiled at her and came towards them.

"Hi…"

Akshara didn't reply and just nodded. So Varsha said, "Hi" and then asked, "Tum to London main the na."

"Ha..lekin wapas bhi to asakta huna," he grinned. "Vaise tum dono baat kar rahe the na. Hey Akshara…tumse jane ke pehle baat bhi nahi hui. Kaisi ho?"

"Thik hu…tum?" Akshara replied finally.

"Better than I have ever been before….parso hi wapas land kia…aur aaj se hi wapas isi University main…." and he went on and on….

"Wapas kyu aya wo?" Akshara was irritated as she took the notes from Varsha's hands. They were in Varsha's room and Akshara was copying notes from Varsha. Varsha was a much better student than Akshara and Akshara always used to copy her notes before exams. It has been a week since Rituraj reentered and it was just two weeks before their exams were set to take off.

"Ab kya problem hai? Wo to tujhse baat bhi karta hai ane ke baad," Varsha patted Akshara on the shoulders.

"Wahi to…baat kyu karta hai? Pehle dosti karta hai, phir ignore karta hai, phir ekdum bhool jata hai, phir chala jata hai, phir wapas ata hai, aur pretend karta hai we are BFFs."

Varsha laughed out loudly. "Tujhe accha nahi lagta to use ignore kar. Tujhe kisne baat karne ko kaha hai?"

"Tu to mere saath hi rehti hai. Tune dekha nahi…main to use thik se hi bhi nahi bolti…seems ke wo notice hi nahi karta main usse baat nahi karna chahti."

Varsha didn't reply at this. So Akshara continued, "Vaise tune use Bindya se baat karte hue dekha?"

Varsha shook her head. "I guess they broke up before Rituraj London chala gaya."

"Ek saal baad aya hai. Mujhse wapas baat kar sakta hai…Bindya se kyu nahi?"

"Chor na ab. Naitik ke bare main baat karte hai," Varsha raised her eyes with a meaningful look.

Akshara forgot how just two weeks back she and Varsha had that conversation about Naitik. The mention of Naitik reminded her how she hadn't seen him so much over the past couple of days. She was too preoccupied with Rituraj, classes and home. But it didn't mean Naitik left her mind. He was always there at a corner of her mind.

"Varsha..pharai karne aye the na…tu Othello ke notes pass kar."

Varsha knew Akshara well, so she didn't stretch the matter.

Akshara wondered whether Naitik knew about Rituraj. Obviously he knew. They were in the same class with her the previous year. But she wondered whether Naitik noticed how friendly she used to be with Rituraj at a time and how that slowed down later…Akshara chided herself. She was thinking too much about Naitik these days and it was unnecessary.

Akshara walked over to Naitik as soon as she saw him. It had been nearly four days since the two didn't talk now. If it was any other situation, Akshara wouldn't have been so excited to meet Naitik again. But a corner of her mind kept repeating to her that she needed to talk to him. Not only Naitik, even Shaurya. The past few days, she couldn't talk to them properly.

"Hi…"

"Hey…"

"Tum canteen main nahi the aj?" Since they had only two more days before classes closed for vacation, Rashmi had called them all over at the canteen. Akshara was actually looking forward to it but was surprised when she didn't find Naitik there.

"Ha…ase hi…socha thoda exercise karlu."

Akshara raised her eyebrows in confusion. Naitik smiled. He had to admit, Akshara looked really cute when she did that. "Football khel raha tha."

"Oh..."

"Akshara…" a well known voice called her from behind. Rituraj. He was getting on her nerves. She turned around reluctantly. Rituraj came over to them.

"Naitik?" he was surprised to see him talking with Akshara. He didn't remember Akshara and Naitik ever talking when he was here last year.

"Hi," Naitik told him.

Rituraj nodded to him and turned to Akshara. "Akshara, actually mujhe tumhari help ki zarurat thi. I needed your notes."

"Umm…you guys carry on. Main baad main milta hu tumse Akshara," Naitik smiled at Akshara and turned to go.

"You guys friends?" Rituraj cocked his eyebrows at Akshara. "I don't remember tum dono baat bhi karte the last year."

Akshara turned at Rituraj. She didn't remember the last time she was happy to talk to him. "Ha Rituraj…we are friends…very good friends…vaise baat to main bohat sare logo se nahi karti thi last year…par lagta hai kisi ne notice nahi kiya." Akshara pushed the notes in Rituraj's hand and turned to go.

"Akshara…" Rituraj caught up with her pretty quickly. "Tum mujhse gussa ho?"

"Nahi…mujhe laga tum the last year tak. Lekin ab fark nahi parta." And she left.
