"Even in day-to-day life, Hindus adhere to many practices which originate in other religions. For instance the practice among Hindus, especially among women, of covering their head while offering prayers is a result of Mohammedan influence and is an adaptation of the Mohammedan practices of wearing Burkha, Chador and observing Purdah. "
It's not mandated in any of the Hindu texts. It depends on culture, not religion. Some Hindus in conservative communities in India cover their heads, other communities don't. For examble, a Hindu in a small village in Rajasthan might keep her hair covered with a veil, but a Hindu in Bombay might not.
and here's the reason for women being told to follow this custom in Islam
Question:
Does Islam require women to cover themselves?
Summary Answer:
Yes. The reason is that it is supposed to curb the sexual appetites of passing men when women travel outside the home.
(this is some info on the customs followed by Christians)
"Ancient custom
The passage applied only to the Corinthian women of Paul's day. It appears that disreputable women, harlots, went around without head and face coverings whilst respectable women covered their heads and faces. In order to observe correct social conventions and avoid offending unbelievers, Christian women should have their heads covered in gatherings for worship and prayer! The injunction regarding head coverings, therefore, does not apply to modern Christian women, as now the practice has been abandoned!
Support For The Practice
Head coverings have nothing to do with women's subjugation to men or husbands' domination over wives, not directly related to "Church order" or any of the vague reasons given. It is indirectly related to Creation order, the man coming before the woman. The injunction to men NOT to have their heads covered and the injunction to women to have their heads covered have to do primarily with the glory of God."
(i was right na? 😃 curb the sexual appetites of men)..this purdah system was brought In India by Mughals (if i'm not wrong..) purdah, child marriage and a few more customs , hindus were forced to follow them to protect their daughters ...taking pallu is not a part of Hindu culture...it's not written in any sacred text of ours that women must cover their heads....it's a part of other religions yes...like Christianity (nuns covered their heads) and Jews also..and a few more..i also read that covering the head is a symbol of male domination..
for those who're doubtful abt these customs being implied only on married women, well I read tht it's optional for unmarried women so...
