Hey guys!!!

This has actually been on my mind for quite some time...but I've finally decided to post it up. Having come to Canada when I was little, I don't really know what it's like to grow up in India. There were a couple of things on the serial that surprised me...

1) In one of the first episodes, Akshara casually mentions how her family would never be accepting of her having any kind of relationship (including friendship) with a boy.
2) Her alliance with Rituraj breaks on the basis that she wants to become a singer. (Though this was a misconception on Rituraj's part, it was still the deciding factor)
3) Dadaji found it really surprising that Akshara would like to continue her education after her marriage was fixed.
4) No one even considers Akshara getting a job an option
5) After marriage, Akshara is having to wear a sari with a pallu over her head every day - no more cute salwars.

Are all these things still happening in India today? I felt that all this seemed a little old-fashioned. What do you guyz think?

India is vast with lots of diverse cultures & religions..it's a mixed bag of people you will find here...in cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh , you will not find any girl taking pallu and wearing saarees at home..and nowdays parents make sure their daughters are educated & independent...yrkkh is not the mirror of the Indian society..it's this family who are orthodox in their views...but they've shown the generation gap quite well, and in future, everything will change but slow and steady...

I completely agree with Charu, I think in Big Cities this not the case anymore there education is the first priority. But in small cities and interior like villages and town there are families with Old traditions and customs. And also arrange marraige still happen in India in quite large number.
So we can say this show is close to reality.

i agree with u devi.. i know what u mean.. Initially when YRKKH started, i found it rather old-fashioned myself.. as i too was born outside of India... so i found the concept of dis serial pretty backwards...

but then again.. its not like it does not happen anymore.. it still does.. soem famililies are conservative .. maybe some parts of India still follow such customs.. so i wudnt say d serial is not realistic.. it pretty much is realistic...

Dear,
Please stop believing in these soaps they do not project real modern india or Gen X as it is called. These soaps take you on a pathetic misguided journey. YRKKH is a dramatic tale of love, pain, and making adjustments and of course soul-searching. My 2 years in India in Mumbai..........I have come across only educated, liberal, independent and strong individuals almost always! And the one who are somewhat near Akshara & Varsha are few and far in between. India is still the same country where a wife will wait for her husband to come back home, so that she can eat with him or after him,😛 but then the women I am talking about is my Grandmother and probably my Mom to an extent😆! So, please do not take these Hindi serials in their face value, what they show is just not true......it is plain emotional drama with some realistic character like Naitik who is refreshingly unique😉😆 . A thinking woman can never be the ideal Indian woman, and an ideal indian woman cannot think for herself that is what I have learnt fron these indian soaps which I watch. We have countless examples, from the ever-preachy Dadi sa of various soaps, to the supposedly liberal Docs. of Sanjeevni....Riddima, Nikita (many more forgotten their names), to the virtuous Santo, to the innocent Akshara, the ''middle-class'' Ragini / Sadhana - they are all the same, brainless, spineless, pretty faces!

Pallu on head or no pallu , going to college for higher education or not.............Women have an individual standing that men can never hope to achieve in India😃. Women get more respect in India than men. They are respected more by their children, by society, by men......... learnt this after watching Indian soaps😉 .......just my soapy5cents

the "realism" in yrkkh is in the form of complex relationships which they are showing..a typical Indian family, modern or orthodox , go through these ups and downs of life, making adjustments willingly or unwillingly..we can identify with most of the characters in yrkkh (not necessarily their thinking..taking pallu and all) ....

ur rite 5 cents..all the characters on indian telly are the same...but there are exceptions like aap ki antara and na aana is des mein laado..Indian soaps are much better now than at the time of Ekta Kapoor who presented a completely different picture of Indian women 😲 😲

🤣

you need more travelling with in india.. go to places like varanasi, rishikesh, bodhgaya, villages of Rajasthan etc.. there only real life of india lies..believe me you will enjoy.. not in cities like mumbai where life is too fast... and traditions which they are showing is still in existence.. just my advise..
