In 1984, when Hum Log was aired on Doordarshan (The first hindi soap to be aired) they showed the story about a lower middle class, extremely conservative Haryanavi Family, which had three daughters...all of them who are employed and independent. They get married in the show later on, but none of them are shown as becoming housewife's...infact, as the serial progressed, you get to see how each of the girl finds her individuality and develops into a stronger, more mature person.
And compare that too 2009, when almost every show on air has the protogonist either married, or thinking of getting married or being forced into a marriage...Its wonderful to have marriage as the central theme, because the insitution is so central to our Indian society, but to show women in such a downright old-fashioned, regressive manner is nothing short of insulting them!
Akshara's spinelessness, lack of confidence and general demotivation is very depressing to watch! Its like her entire life hinges on the premise of who will agree to marry her!
