This post was inspired by one of Violette's comments on coraline's topic.
If I saw 23 year old girl involved with a 42 year old man in real life, it would not bother me, especially in a western country. I could see such a relationship raising a few eyebrows in metropolitan india but not make much of a difference in a village- which is shown in the show.
My belief is along as it is safe, legal and consensual then a May to December romance is all right. who am I to judge?
However older men who fall for younger women are judged by our society. their attraction is sometimes written of as something superficial. it is commonly misunderstood that the man is either having a midlife crisis or he is after sex. which can be true in some cases but in other cases, it is genuine love. MMKD depicts Mukhi's attraction towards aru because of her lively spirit and his desire for a life partner- the man has been alone for too long. while society may not understand that, it's roots are pure and genuine.
I watched Nishabd starring jiah khan and amitabh bachan, the movie was about a 60 year old married man and an 18 year old girl. There was definitely an ick factor there, due to the fact that the age difference was far too big, amitabh looked very old, and it was all shown in a sexual manner. Thankfully, Mukhi and aru's relationship is not gross and I wouldn't even mind if it happened in real life. so far, the makers have shown it in an aesthetically pleasing way which makes me believe in their love. whereas in nishabd, It looks like sexual attraction rather than love, but liike the tagline said- some things are not meant to be understood.
