Taiji says that the problem with Sameer is that he is Maheshwari. That this is his shortcoming. Can someone please explain why this is so. Why can an Agarwal not marry a Maheshwari. I know that this is some caste issue, but what exactly is it. Who then can an Agarwal or a Maheswari marry?
An explanation will be highly appreciated.

Since I am an Agarwal
I did ask my father this question
Maheshwari are considered a lower caste as compared to Agarwals
hence that is the issue but this was in 90s
not now

Thanks for this response. So who could an Agarwal marry if we look at the current characters. Also who of the current characters could a Maheshwari marry. What caste is Agarwal and what caste is Maheshwari?

see both of them are baniyas
In current case
agarwals can marry garg,goel,bansal
and maheshwaris can marry into guptas, mittals
there are around 100 and more gotras of baniyas
If you know history
there are 4 type of castes
Brahmin
chatriryas
vaishya
shudras

Baniyas fall in Vaishya

Thanks for a great explanation. So it's inter clan marriage that they are objecting to not inter caste marriage. Discrimination knows no bounds really! What other absurd things do we humans find to discriminate against each other on. 😡

Even in 90's inter-caste marriage was not an issue, atleast in big cities like Mumbai. About Ahmedabad I don't know much. Most of my friends have married out of their caste without any issues from either of their families.

These are not castes, they are Varnas. What we call castes are actually called Jati . Caste is a word derived from the Portuguese word "casta", AFAIK.

Perhaps those were the lucky ones.

Pardon me, but what is the need to have every word in any language to have an English translation ?
