Chapter 15 - THE RISE OF THE SUN
He sat on the bed looking at her, as she brought two cups of black tea. She knew he wouldn't be able to sleep after what he heard from Parth. She sat next to him and waited for him to talk. Her mind also told her that it wouldn't be easy for him as he has the habit of not sharing his pain with anyone. She kept sipping the hot tea and he on the other hand watched her wondering why she was not saying anything. It was like they were playing a game of "who will break the silence." He soon realized she was not going to give in. He had to start the conversation.
"Naina say something ."
"This time I want you to talk. I told you what was there in my mind, but you don't seem convinced. If you were, then by now you would have called Parth to let him know your decision."
"Its not that easy girl. Nanu , didn't say anything which means he might have a plan in place and I don't want to take any decision that will jeopardize it ."
"Then why don't you talk to him. You know its urgent . Sameer it could also be that he is trying to protect you by putting his life in danger , hence the silence from his side."
He couldn't deny , she had a point. If that was the case then he should act fast , even before his mom reached landed home.
"Naina, I am scared. I have this feeling that I will loose this battle just like how my dad lost it."
"Your dad lost it because he had no one by his side, not even his wife. He was all by himself. You wont because you have me with you. Even if the world doesn't stand by you, I will Sameer. Till my last breath I will stand by you."
"I don't want anything to happen to you Naina. You have become so important to me. You are like a part of me. If I loose you I will collapse forever."
"Then you will need to fight. You don't have a choice because if you don't then they will rule. You don't need to feel weak, you are not alone. You have a "Pride ", a family that you can call your own, and you will need to protect that Pride , if not others will destroy your bloodline. Do you want that ??"
"NO!!"
"Then listen to me , call Parth and ask him to leak the news in the newspaper."
"Well , why leak the news then. We will formally inform the world that I have taken over from Nanu. No hide and seek game. Let it be out in the open. "
"WOW !! not bad."
"Thank you Naina!!"
"You are welcome.
When I didn't see you here , I had gotten scared
"Sorry dear , The signal strength isn't great inside this cottage , hence walked out. I thought , I will get back by the time you finish changing. But the news was pretty bad , that I was just rooted to the spot."
"That's ok , Are you planning to call him now??"
"I want to, but I doubt if Nanu would agree. I want to speak to Nanu before I get it printed on paper."
"Sameer, I think you should call him now. See to that atleast by day after tomorrow the news should be out , else we will be late."
"Nanu might have gone to sleep , don't want to wake him up."
"Knowing him , I don't think he would have. He is like you , he will not be able to sleep until he has a solution for a problem. Go and call Parth on the home phone number. I am sure Nanu will hear the sound and will want to know why you have called."
"Naina , you are an absolute strategist . Not bad lady."
"Stop admiring me !! Go and call."
He took the phone and walked outside the cottage . She sat at the verandah looking at him. She saw him pacing up and down the path, talking animatedly. She was sure he was trying to convince Nanu to accept their plan. Time kept ticking , he was still on the phone and his body language shouted the fact that Nana ji was adamant not to give in. She decided she would go back to the room to get two more cups of tea. "He seems exhausted. He surely will need something to settle his nerves", she thought.
As she was preparing tea, she heard the front door closing. She watched him sit on the bed and taking a deep breath.
"Did he agree??"
"I did not give him choice to disagree."
"Was he angry??"
"Yes "
"What was his point for not agreeing ."
"He was scared that they would target us."
"Well that's exactly what we wanted rt??"
"Yes , that's what I told and that's what made him angry."
"That's ok. Did you speak to Parth and tell him what to do."
"Yep , in fact I dictated the write up that needs to be published in paper. The news will be out, day after tomorrow."
"You mean Monday morning ...and your mom will be here on Tuesday ??"
"Yes."
"Good."
"Naina, I don't think she will cancel her trip."
"That's ok. Let her come. After all she is here to meet her daughter in law. Let me also get to know your mom."
"Are you not scared??"
"No Sameer, I am not and we shouldn't be because we are prepared. We know their intentions but they are not aware of the fact that we know about the past. At least they won't be behind Nanu. That's what we wanted."
"Yeah. I want you to be careful Naina. More than my mom , I fear about Mr. Somani and The Saxena's. Now along with them Tara's dad will also be there. He is not going to keep quiet , especially after my marriage with you."
"Sameer , we will be careful, but everyone in this world has a weakness. If they think Nanu and I are your weakness, then be smart and find their weakness. Why not begin with your step dad."
"Hmmm...I am so confused."
"Anyways , at the moment what we could do , we did, rest lets take it as it comes. Your tea has gone cold again."
"Don't bother to reheat it. I will just finish it off. You sleep , I will watch TV for some more time."
"I am not going to sleep. I will sit with you and watch TV.."
"Are you sure??"
"YES!!"
They sat on the sofa , watching late night movie on DD. He was just sitting there acting as if he was interested in the movie. She moved to one end of the sofa , looked at him and patted on her lap, signaling him to lie down on her lap. He hesitated a lil and then gave in to his heart. He placed his head on her lap , closed his eyes and turned towards the TV , his back facing her. She could feel her salwar getting slightly damp. He was crying. She tilted his head forcing him to face her.
"Why Sameer?? Why these tears??"
"Why not Naina?? Look at my fate. I have everything in the world except peace of mind. When we started the journey , I was happy , I felt at least now like the others , I will also experience a "settled life" but no!! I don't think happiness is written in my fate. Whenever I feel I am going to be happy, even before I begin to enjoy it, it would be snatched away from me and every time the person who does that is the one who gave birth to me.
I wanted to enjoy these moments of my honeymoon with you peacefully and you saw what happened?? There are so many couples staying here , did anyone of them go through what we just went thru?? "
"Sameer, how do you know that they are happy and enjoying?? Did you speak to anyone of them?? Do they have what you have Sameer?? No one has everything in life. If we do , then we will forget the creator himself. Now coming to happiness that of course is in your hands. You can't blame anyone for it because it's about how you control your state of mind.
We were faced with a problem, we found an interim solution. Can we do anything more to better the situation ?"
"Nope"
"Then why worry?? Why cant you enjoy with what you have right now in your hands. You are still here with me on our honeymoon but worrying of something which we solved. Now can you blame anyone for it."
There was absolute silence , as he knew she was right. He wiped his tears, got up and sat next to her.
"You are right , I should just enjoy this moment."
The smile was back on his face. "Mrs. Sameer, why you are wearing this dress?? Why not that one I bought for you."
"I had worn it , but when I saw you were not around , I changed into this so that I could step out of the cottage to search for you."
"Fine , now I am back , go change. I really don't like you in this cotton salwar. Please don't wear it to bed."
"OK!! "
"Go change , I will switch of the TV and come. Lets sleep. Tomorrow lets laze around here and then later part of the day , we will visit the nearby villages. We will get to see handloom weavers. And once we are back, we will book for Jungle Safari for Monday afternoon. Ok with this plan or you have something else in your mind."
"This is good. I will change and come." Saying so she walked to the bedroom thinking about what he told her. Its not that she didn't understand his state of mind. He had told her his past few months back and understood his pain . He did have a point but didn't want to accept it in front of him. That would have weakened him. She wanted him to be strong and fight for what was rightfully his . She quickly changed the cloths and walked back to bedroom. The sight that she saw wasn't anything great. He was sulking again.
"NOW WHAT ??"
"Nothing Naina. You look nice in this green. You have a Saree of this colour - Orgenza??"
"Yes ...you liked that Saree??"
"Yes , I like you in that one and that's the day , you had officially crowned me as the crown prince."
"Me ?? nahhh!!"
"That's the day when you refused to call my name and when I forced you , you called me SIR. How can I forget that day darling."
"Oh god You havnt forgotten it!!"
"Nope, but I had promised that day , that I will make you call my name. See??!!
"Nice to see the smile back on your face Sameer. By the way what were you thinking when I just walked in"
"Nah...nothing important."
"But I want to know."
"Oh No ! you sound like a curious wife." Hearing this both started laughing but she was smart not to let go the topic. She wanted to know what was bothering him.
"I am waiting.. tell me." She said, holding his hand.
"Just that , my planning never goes wrong when it comes to official matters but somehow in personal life it isn't the same."
"Did Parth call again..??"
"No, that's fine. It will go as planned."
"Then??"
"Its about us...you know what I mean..."
That's when she realized what he was hinting at. She suddenly felt conscious and got up from there and moved towards the dressing table as if she was searching for her comb. The reality was that her hair was neatly tied into a bun. He understood, she wasn't feeling comfortable to discuss about it. He switched off his side of the bedside lamp and lied down. He didn't want to push her into a zone that she wasn't comfortable.
Seeing that he was quiet after that discussion, she quickly got on to the bed and sat next to him.
"Angry with me??"
"No..."
"Then why did you not wait for me ??"
"Whats there to wait. I thought you were going to comb your hair ...well the truth is you weren't comfortable to discuss the topic. So I thought , best was to just go to sleep.That's all."
"Well, you did have a chance to buy it . In fact , that pharmacy guy kept asking you and you said no. So, now why do you want to feel bad??"
"Which pharmacy guy??"
"The place where we bought all those medicine and napkins."
"Well , he asked if I want somethi...Oh god!! Was he asking about...??"
"Yesss..."
"You understood it !! Then why did you not tell me."
"I thought we were going platonic!!"
"Nice!! Thanks for letting me know . It actually feels very nice." He said ironically and continued saying "I guess this might be the reason why Parth and Nanu laughed. Now its all falling in place. I cant believe I could be so hopeless in such matters.."
She couldn't help laughing . He was looking like a child from who his favorite toy was snatched. The way she was laughing only increased his irritation . He pulled her into a tight hug , then pinned her on to the bed and started tickling her. What started as laughter and fun ended up in a passionate kiss leaving both of them struggling for breath.
He was still not willing to let her go. He kept her close to him. Even the slightest movement made him restless. He needed her. He had never felt so happy in life. Her head was on his chest and her hand caressing his forearm. After sometime she got up and he gave her a questioning look.
"Where are you going ??"
"That silk night shirt of yours is so irritating."
"Fine , I will remove it. Just say that , why do you want to move away from me."
"Was going to reduce the temperature of AC. Feeling very hot."
He discarded his night wear and decided to just be in his boxers. She was back on bed and looking at him in a curious way.
"Penny for your thoughts??"
"Nothing . " She was back on his chest and this time the feel was different for both. Both were cocooned in the blanket and she was making patterns on his chest with her fingers.
The moment he heard nothing , he knew there was something that was keeping her thoughts occupied. He remembered Parth's advice and decided to probe more.
"Naina dear, I am married man , I have understood that nothing means something , hence don't play this probe me games , please tell me honey what is running through your busy brain??"
She giggled like a school girl and said "I cant tell you. Its not right to ask because it's too personal."
"Between us there is nothing like that ...tell me??"
"Why did you wax your chest??"
"What ??"
"You heard it , didn't you?? I am curious to know..."
It took some time to come back from the shock she had given him. The first thing that came to his mind was how did she know that he had hair on his chest. The first time she saw him shirtless was after marriage. His pink face looked at her curiously and came to a decision of finding out the truth.
"And how did you know that I had hair on my chest?? " The tables had turned. His unexpected question made her blush , she lowered her eyes and said "Well one of the days at office , your top button was open and a few strands did find its way out . "
"Aha and why would you look at my chest."
"Because I have something called eyes. It helps me to see. Does that clarify ??"
"Fine, so do you like me with hair or without."
"Doesn't matter , now sleep ."
"I want to know Naina."
"Then listen, I have always felt that one should never trust a man without hair on his chest."
"Ohooo...fine madam I will not shave again. Not that I liked to do it. Its just that, Tara and Raghav used to say men looked Macho like this."
The moment he said that , she turned to other side facing her back to him. She somehow didn't feel comfortable to hear about Tara and Raghav. Her insecurity was not something that was ready to leave and Sameer sensed it. He wanted to let her know only she mattered to him. He switched off the bedroom lights , pulled her close to him , peppered kisses on her neck and her ear.
"Naina, I know what you are thinking . Tara never asked me to wax . In fact, lot of guys used to shave their chest hairs. Even I did it. Don't think anything beyond that.
Tara's likes and dislikes are not important. You are important for me."
"Its ok Sameer , its about your comfort ."
"My comfort is with you near me Naina.." She didn't say anything further. All she did was turned to his side hugged him tightly . Soon she was sleeping peacefully in his arms listening to his heartbeats, but for him sleep was a distant dream.
Having her sleeping close to him was the only solace. He was holding her as if she was a treasure , he wanted to savor these moments. He didn't know what stood ahead of their life. Uncertainty lurked above their head. His mind kept thinking how to keep her and Nanu safe. For the first time he was getting something close to a family and he was not willing to loose it. He didn't mind loosing then entire empire if it came to a point of saving their life. He could build another one again, but loosing either one of them would cripple him for life.
The thought of loosing her , brought in a fear in him. Unconsciously he pulled her close to him and kissed her forehead. She in return nuzzled closer to his neck and even before he could realise what she was up to, her lips were on his. The kiss they shared was slow, soothing and comforting . It had the power to pull him away from dark thoughts and push him to light, making him see the strength he had in him.
"Sameer, trust me. Everything will be fine and I am sure you will set things right. In fact I believe only you can do it. And I will be there with you. Don't give up , We will fight it out together."
"Love you Naina."
"Love you too Sameer. I think you should just calm yourselves and try get some rest. Dont worry , even on the darkest days, the one above sends the moon and stars to provide light for us. Look at the sky , the night is nearly done , just few more hours for the sun to show up and by then you will be ready to face the world. All you need to do is believe in yourself."
Saying so she moved a lil away from him, adjusted the pillows , wrapped her arms around him and drew him close to her. She places his head on her chest , kisses his forehead and kept caressing his back till sleep overpowered both of their troubled minds.
