Half Girlfriend: anyone watched it?
Chapter 8
It had been two days since the legendary Vicky Apology, and still there was a buzz about it. Afterall, it was not not a daily event that the most dreaded College Bully and his gang, apologise to a first year girl. The said girl however, had become more of a buzz.
Everyone now and then, you could pass the college corridor and hear about the petite first year and her beauty. People were actively linking her up with the college hero and extremely handsome Sameer, and getting miserable in the process. While some linked her with the second year and quiet-good-looking Prem, due to the extremely-frequent-times, when he had been noticed, rather caught, staring at the pretty little Naina. A small fraction of the college, however, had started predicting a love triangle, seeing two famous, good looking boys, giving too much attention to the same girl.
Naina and the entire gang remained unaware about all this since the gossipers were smart enough to hide it from them. They didn't fancy being punched by Sameer Maheshwari and go into Coma, thank you very much.
Naina, however, was busy dealing with an internal dilemma. How to thank Sameer? And most importantly, Where to thank Sameer? They don't meet at a common place, and well, they don't even talk at a place, even if they meet. But, Naina knew she had to thank him. He did so much for her. He came forward to help, when no one else did. He scared the second years away, and even made them apologise to her. Now everyone was afraid to approach her, even if they wanted to ask for help. She had to express how grateful she was. With this particular resolve, Naina went to sleep beside an already snoring Preeti.
--------------------------------
It was late in the morning and the VJN University was busy. Some were at their classes, while some were bunking in the Red Rose. Some were lazily lying on the grass and others were at activity room.
Naina however, had an impending task to complete. She headed towards the cricket ground with indomitable spirit. "She will thank Sameer" she thought proudly. Though she looked quiet calm from the outside, she played the song "Hum honge Kamyab" in her mind again and again. But a single soldier, can never win a war against four enemy soldiers, can she. So she got, her fellow soldiers, Preeti and Swati along with her, who looked quiet happy, given that they could pass their time and ogle at the college cricketers.
The cricket ground was mostly deserted, if you don't count the four boys, who practically lived here. Some daily spectators were also there, who didn't have anything much to do, so they were fooling around here. Usually, the whole VJN team was present here, but due to surprise lecture by the principal, they were in their classes. Arjun was on the pitch, while Munna was balling. Sameer was fielding and Pandit was supposed to be the wicket-keeper, though he didn't seem too happy about it.
"Yaar tum logo ki mujhse kya Dushmani hai mujhse. Hamesha hi wicket keeper Bana dete ho. Aaj toh woh third-year wali Muskaan bhi aayi hai. Arjun tujhe dosti ki kasam, please bhai batting dede. Agar meri setting ho gayi na, toh main tujhe Red Rose mein party dunga."
Arjun looked at Pandit and sighed.
"Accha theek hai. Ladki ke chakkar mein dost ki batting de deni chahiye. Geeta mein bhi likha hai"
Pandit looked as if he had been given a hidden treasure, and soon swaggered down the ground, to exchange places with Arjun. He glanced at Muskaan and ruffled his hair "stylishly". Muskaan was however, busy staring at Sameer and didn't give even an atom long attention to Pandit.
"Chalo ab start kar lete hai", Munna offered.
But the game didn't start that soon, since the arrival of the three girls, slowed down their initial speed and vigour. Munna immediately dropped the ball he was holding and soon his eyes became busy in staring at Swati. Arjun looked quiet annoyed, while Pandit was still trying to get Muskaan's attention. But the scene was totally different for a certain boy.
Sameer looked at Naina and the time slowed down for him, yet again. She was wearing a pink coloured cotton retro dress, that came down to her knees, but it showed off too much of her skin, if you ask him. His eyes was drinking the sight of her bare legs while his own legs, were shaking due to that. Her hair were tied in a long scarf ponytail, and she was wearing cream coloured ballerina shoes. A pair of pink stud earrings, adorned her ears. His eyes were really enjoying gazing ar her creamy curves, when a voice interrupted his asanskari-fantasy.
"Tum teeno yahan kya kar rahi ho. Chalo jao yahan se." Arjun commanded them.
"Yaar Arjun chodd na. Shayad yahaan meri kamaal ki batting dekhne aayi hai."
Munna exclaimed proudly and was about to snatch away the bat from Pandit, when his ladylove exclaimed,
"Nahi hum yahaan batting nahi dekhne aaye hai."
"Toh phir kya karne aayi ho teeno", Sameer asked curiously. He was thinking that maybe, Naina had come here to watch his batting skills. He had even formed a plan about how he would snatch the bat from Pandit. Due to his own experiences, he is well aware of the fact that batting always helps to impress the girls. He really wanted to impress Naina, for a reason which is still unknown to him.
Naina was biting her lips in nervousness. She looked as if someone had told her to attack the enemy at the border, with nothing but a small handgun. The presence of her brother, did push down her already feeble spirits even more. But she still answered,
"Bhaiya hum woh fielding karne aaye the. Aaj zyada players bhi nahi hai. Yeh humara free period tha toh socha ki yahaan aa jaye"
"Bahut sochne lagi hai tu Naina. Yeh koi market nahi hai jo time pass karne aa gaye. Chalo jao ab. Humein practice karni hai"
"Arjun inhein khelne dete hai na yaar. Dekh aaj players bhi Kam hai. Yeh teeno fielding karengi toh faayda hi hoga na"
"Are Sameer, inhein kahaan fielding aati hai. Yahaan time pass karne aayi hai bas. Aur itne log baithe hai yahaan, kya sochenge. Ladkiya cricket nahi khelti hai. Aur inke kehne ka kya hai. Hamesha hi aise karti hai, khaandaan ki izzat ki kaha padi hai inhein." Arjun exclaimed and looked at the girls with dislike.
"Dekh Arjun koi farak nahi padega. Inhein khelne dete hai na. Aur logon ka to kaam hi hai baatein karna. Aur chhoti hai teeno tujhse, zidd toh karengi na. Dekh tu bada bhai hai baat maan le."
After much persuasion from Sameer, Arjun finally gave in, rather reluctantly. The girls were informed about their respective positions, ignoring the protests from Preeti about how she was told to stand too far. Even the boys were reorganized. Now, Pandit was fielding with the girls and Arjun was the wicket-keeper. Munna had agreed to balling, after Sameer explained how girls loved the ballers more these days and Swati looked like one of them.
Sameer looked around the field triumphantly. He had convinced Arjun to let the girls play. He simply couldn't bear the disappointed face of the fragile young girl. She had to be kept safe, happy and content. She deserved all this and Sameer took it upon himself to give her that. Moreover, he had even been successful in the reorganization of the field, which was planned very carefully, keeping in mind his goal of showing off his batting skills and impressing Naina.
Soon the players went to their positions and began to prepare. Even Sameer was carefully adjusting his pads since today's batting was quiet important for him. He was busy in his task, when he saw his first-year fantasy approaching him. His heartbeat became very fast and he swallowed hard. Really, who could guess that a petite and fragile first-year, could make The Sameer Maheshwari nervous?
She came closer. Her face was completely red. Sameer thought that she might want to kiss him. She wasn't that close, but he can always hope. Afterall, hope keeps a person alive. Seeing her nervousness, Sameer thought that maybe he should assure her that he was a decent man, and was totally kissable, but thought against it. His fantasies were about to turn even more wild, but were thankfully interrupted by a sweet and familiar voice.
"Thank you Sameer".
A wave of Deja vu striked Sameer. He suddenly remembered a six-year-old Naina, saying a similar "thank you" in vaguely similar surroundings. But their was a difference, now she had delicious curves, very inviting lips and a really creamy skin. Her cute chubby cheeks, and little pigtails were lost somewhere. Sameer felt really ashamed of himself. He was daydreaming about her. He was thinking so undecent about her. But he couldn't deny, he still wanted her. His asanskari-fantasies, actually seemed quiet right. It just felt so natural and right, like she was supposed to be his first fantasy. He could actually declare, that by all means, he has a massive crush on her.
He expected her to run away with a red face, like she did twelve years back ( yes, he had treasured all their conversations), but was surprised, when he found her still standing here, waiting for his response. He cleared his throat and answered,
" Dekho ismein "Thanks" kehne ki koi baat nahi thi. Tum bahut important ho mere liye. Umm.. mera matlab hum sab ke liye. Main kabhi tumhare saath kuch galat nahi hone de sakta."
Naina looked at him, and smiled gratefully. But before she could return to her usual place, Sameer did something unexpected.
He extended his hand forward and smiled affectionately at her,
"Friends?"
Naina blinked twice and was about to pinch herself. Was he serious? Friends? With him? She couldn't believe it. What had life done to her. She had been pining over him since she was thirteen. She had pined over him for five years, five long years... only to have him as a perfectly innocent and definitely-not-in-love friend? But it was good for her wasn't it? If they become friends, then maybe her situation will improve. Maybe some nice and harmless sibling-kind-of feeling will arise in her heart for him. Then, she can live peacefully and happily for the rest of her life. She finally resolved her inner conflict and looked confidently at him.
She smiled at him and shook his hand,
"Friends"
Saying so, she moved to her spot and tried to control the abnormal increase in her heratbeats. She looked around, and luckily, nobody smelled something fishy. On the other hand, Sameer didn't know if he had done right or wrong. At that moment, his brain, his heart, and his hormones were running to three different directions. For the first time in his life, he listened to his heart, and extended his hand forward.
He shook himself out of these thoughts, and soon concentrated on his impending task of impressing Naina with his batting. People are right, Men will be Men.
-----------------------------------
Becoming friends didn't mean that Sameer and Naina had started hanging around or had started talking in public. They were still confined to their own boundaries. Being friends for them, meant passing a small smile if you see the other in corridor, or in Sameer's case, paying for the girls' canteen expenses, despite their united protests.
Though they were happy with the new development, neither of them was truly satisfied. They wanted so much more. But both restricted themselves, by misinterpreting the actions of the other. For Naina, she thought that he would never fancy hanging around with boring first years like them. As for Sameer, he thought that any public conversation from his part would make her feel uncomfortable.
However, the scenario drastically changed one afternoon, when Sameer was passing through an empty classroom. He curiously peeked to see who was sitting there, only to see the object of his lust, sitting on a bench, too engrossed in reading.
Her silky strands of hair were falling on her forehead and he noticed how their were lines of irritation on her forehead, everytime she found something difficult. She was playing with her pen and her eyes were deeply concentrated on the book before her.
Sameer felt a different kind of magnetic pull, everytime he was around her. He didn't know when he walked inside the classroom, or when he stood in front of her. He just knew that his legs carried him towards her, as if they were meant to go to her, as if he belonged to her.
He observed her closely, until she sensed an intruder and looked up. She looked directly in his eyes. For moment, time stood still for both of them . Sameer observed how her hazel eyes changed their colour after every interval. Even Naina was mesmerized looking at his warm and pleasant brown eyes. Few minutes passed and for after what seemed like eternity, both of them diverted their eyes. Sameer coughed awkwardly, while Naina was blushing profusely and trying to hide her face from him.
He cleared his throat and spoke softly,
" Tum yahaan akeli kya kar rahi ho. Abhi toh break time hai na"
"Ha woh main bas Economics revise kar rahi thi. Mujhe bhookh nahi thi. Lekin Tum yahaan kya kar rahe ho"
"Woh main toh bas Principal ki announcement sunne jaa raha tha. Sab keh rahe the ki kuch important batane wali hai. Tum nahi gayi?."
"Nahi, main bas jaane hi waali thi. Agar tumhe jaane ki jaldi hai toh tum jaa sakte ho."
"Nahi koi jaldi nahi hai.", Saying so he sat down on the bench in front of her.
Naina suddenly felt extremely uncomfortable and started sweating profusely. She tried to concentrate again but wasn't really successful.
"Tum eco padh rahi ho na. Waise mujhe eco zyada pasand nahi hai. Actually mujhe overall padhaai hi zyada pasand nahi hai", he laughed and Naina too laughed with him. They were getting a-sort-of comfortable around each other.
Suddenly, another thought striked Sameer, "Tum Bura na mano toh main tumse kuch pucho?"
When Naina shook her head, he continued, " Naina woh main soch raha tha ki tum humare saath time spend kyu nahi Karti. Matlab tum teeno humare saath bhi toh reh sakti ho na. Main aisa koi suggestion tumhein nahi de pata. Mujhe lagta hai ki tum umm.. uncomfortable feel karogi. Afterall tumhari family thodi conservative hai toh..." He finished and looked at her.
Naina however, spoke very confidently,
"Nahi main aise uncomfortable feel nahi Karti. Bas mujhe lagta hai ki tum, mera matlab tum sabko first-years ke saath ghoomna ya baithna accha nahi lagega. Tum seniors ho, aur bahut famous bhi ho toh isliye..."
Sameer burst out laughing at that. Naina looked bewildered and embarrassed. What had she said? Was it something funny? She really didn't get the joke. Sameer looked at her affectionately, before continuing,
"Aisa kuch nahi hai. Tum sabko humare saath rehna chahiye. Aur ha, tum teeno first years ho, iss baat se mujhe ya kisi Ko koi farak nahi padta. Aisa phir mat sochna. Actually, Ek kaam karte hai, kal se break mein Tum log humare saath Red Rose chalna.", Seeing her reluctance, he added, "Arjun ki tension mat lo, main hoon na".
Naina smiled brightly and nodded. Sameer checked his watch and gasped,
"Arey itni derr ho gayi. Chalo jaldi chalte hai. Principal kuch bahut important bolne wali hai"
Without wasting a single moment, Sameer went out and Naina followed him blindly. They soon reached the conference area. A large crowd was gathered there and they all were chatting excitedly about the announcement. Preeti and Swati were at one corner, while Munna, Pandit and Arjun were in the middle of the crowd. Students ran up and down the area, looking for their friends in the large crowd. Loud noises could be heard from everywhere and girls' giggling turned even more louder. Sameer shifted in front of Naina, to shield her from the large crowd and Naina smiled at him, gratefully.
She looked around and saw the third-year Sunaina, staring at Sameer. Naina observed her sleeveless top, and extremely short skirt. How could her parents allow her to wear that? Sunaina's eyes brightened immediately and Naina looked where she was looking. Apparently, Sameer had caught her staring at him. Sunaina smiled all flirtatious at him and winked. As for Sameer, he just rolled his eyes and ignored her, shifting his attention to Naina and protecting her from a group of extremely active boys, who were running around. Naina saw how Sunaina's attention shifted to her and how she looked at her with intense dislike, confusing her even further.
After five minutes or so, Naina felt a pair of eyes on her and turned around, only to see a similar gaze. Prem waved towards her and smiled kindly. Naina waved back, and returned his smile. Prem had a huge grin plastered on his face, which Naina did not understand. Sameer, who observed their little exchange, scowled and looked as if he could kill him any time, by suffocating him with his bare hands. He grabbed her hand, claiming her attention to him, and far away from the second year.
Soon, the Principal entered, followed by JBR and the other teachers. The loud noises immediately stopped and all the students paid attention to the principal.
"Good afternoon to all of you. I hope ki aapke lectures acche chal rahe honge. Padhaai bahut zaroori hai, lekin VJN mein sports aur extra-curricular activities Ko bhi utna hi support kiya jata hai. Hum chahte hai ki aap sab padhaai ke saath, baaki sab fields mein bhi excel karein. Aaj humare paas aap sabke liye teen badi announcements hain. First, main humare college ki cricket team ko upcoming inter-college tournament ke liye best of luck wish karna chahti hoon aur humare captain, Sameer Maheshwari Ko bhi apni blessings dena chahti hoon". She nodded to Sameer, who smiled slightly. He was still standing beside Naina, making sure that she was all right in the large crowd.
"Second, main first years ka welcome karti hoon aur aap sabko inform karna chahti hoon ki next week, Friday ko aap logon ke liye Freshers party organise ki gayi hai", At this, the first years cheered loudly. They began their discussion about what they will wear and how they would come.
"Silence"
Hearing this, the crowd immediately quieted down and listened attentively.
"Ha toh, mujhe aap sabko yeh bhi inform karna hai ki iss saal, Mr and Ms Fresher declare nahi kiye jayenge, as a punishment for the cheating, jo pichle saal ki gayi thi. So there is no competition this time." Hearing this, the crowd shouted angrily and declared how it was not their fault. Preeti and Swati looked horrified, while Naina still had a neutral expression.
"Silence"
"I really don't care ki aap sab kya sochte hai. You should thank me ki maine iss saal party organise karne ki permission de di hai, warna iss saal toh college mein kuch hota hi nahi. Third, jaisa ki aap sab jaante hai ki humare college ke Student Council ke President, Rajiv ab graduate ho chuke hai. Toh ab humne decide Kiya hai ki, college mein President ke elections rakhe jayenge. Elections aaj se theek do mahine baad honge, toh interested students apne naam JBR Ko de sakte hai. Exact date kal tak notice board par lag jayegi. Students ki convenience ke liye candidates ke naam bhi agle hafte tak notice board par lag jayenge. Dhyaan rahe ki aap logon ko apna naam iss hafte tak dena hi hoga aur sirf third years hi bhaag le sakte hai", At this, sound of disappointment could be heard from the second years. Some started shouted that it was very wrong and biased decision.
"Silence"
"I don't care ki app logon ko kya lagta hai aur kya nahi. As I said, sirf third years hi part le sakte hai. Aur, I don't want any kind of maar pitaai aur ha, vote khareedna ya bechna is strictly punishable. Agar aap log aisa kuch karte pakde gaye, toh you guys will be punished severely. For any queries, please contact JBR. Good luck".
Saying so, the principal soon exited the conference area, leaving behind a group of extremely excited and chattering students.
