Over a century and counting episodes we have witnessed Naina and Sameer exchanging tokens of love---yes the unlikeliest tokens called Handkerchiefs. Be it when Naina spills the ink or be it when she falls in the muddy water.Be it while his eyes get teary all thanks to onions and the latest one takes the cake. Not only the piece of cloth was taken but was kissed with all love and sincerity. No doubt the care and love the piece of cloth exuded gave him the strength to endure all the hardships that came along the match to make someone special the winner.

While re watching few of my choicest episodes I found that the handkerchief can be said to be turning point of their lives.I was just reading Othello and found how simple act of giving handkerchief' can change course of lives.

In Shakespeare's play "Othello," a handkerchief is used to symbolize many ideas. Shakespeare is brilliant in his ways of stringing along minor details to create strong symbolism. One of the things that the handkerchief symbolizes is the control that Iago has over those who possess the handkerchief. It is clear that anyone who has played a part with Iago's revenge against Othello has dealt with the handkerchief as well, and as the play progresses, Iago's control grows stronger and stronger.

The handkerchief was something special to Othello. As it drops, the once clean handkerchief becomes a little tarnished after hitting the floor, just as Othello and Desdemona's relationship was clean and happy before being ruined by Iago having possession of the handkerchief. This is the start of the most vital point in Iago's plot of revenge against Othello.

The handkerchief in Othello symbolizes the control that Iago has over those who possess it. Iago controls whoever has the handkerchief by making them a part of his revenge scheme. As the plot of the play develops, those who have the handkerchief lose all truth, respect, and for some, their lives.

Coming to the YUDKBH drama:

After Sameer loses in the head boy competition,Naina comes to talk to him. There she falls in messy muddy water.A strong symbolism of ahead times. The mess of emotions and treachery she was going to land in.Sameer being the good natured chivalrous boy gives his handekerchief to wipe out the stain from her face.He drops the key while taking out the handkerchief and later she finds the library key dropped in the puddle.

It needs no mention what the "handkerchief' and "key twisted and turned the course of their lives.

The handkerchief again yesterday showed the care and concern that was back in her after the debacle of emotions. The handkerchief which once spelt the ruins' now became a healer'.It became a strengthening pillar to endure the hardships that lurked around.

The handkerchief cannot clean the ink stained shirt nor can heal the bruises on head but the concern and unconditional love the piece of cloth carried was enough to traverse through difficult phase.

While Othello lost his Desdemona to a mere 'misunderstanding' of handkerchief ,Sameer got his Naina with 'understanding' of handkerchief.

The token of love they exchange is pure and pleasure and there lies the powerful magic.

This is my POV,do share your views as well.😳

Hum labon se kehna paaye, unse haal-e-dil kabhi
Aur woh samjhein nahi yeh khamoshi kya cheez hai

Your post reminds of Aamir Khan blissfully dancing in his college campus on finding Sonali Bendre's handkerchief cum scarf in his college library with a wonderful ghazal playing in the background Hoshwalon ko khabar kya'. Handkerchiefs as rightly said by you have played an important role in stories, especially in love stories. Maximum love stories have shaped around a handkerchief and Sameer- Naina's story is no different. The series of exchange of rumaals started with the ink spill on Sameer's shirt and it went up to soothing his wound yesterday.

If one handkerchief has wiped Naina's stain then the other had soothed Sameer's wound. In the olden times or even till late 90s handkerchiefs were a starter of many love stories. I have seen it in many movies and read it in many stories that how exchange of rumaals led to stealing glances and ignited a fire between people. Handkerchief was also a reminder of the loved one who was far away from us. In Sarfarosh Aamir Khan had kept her handkerchief for years with him.

Unfortunately we don't get to see such stories anymore where people exchange rumaals. Movies and stories lack depth. This show has kept the legacy atleast.

Beautiful post Minu...šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘...totally agree...with every zoom sequen ce of the handkerchief...there has been a twist in the shades of the character and a move in the story...i guess Zulu or Ashwathy...if i am not mistaken has posted about this point earlier...that time i did think ...was it intentional...yest i felt...it was...
Yest's handkerchief gesture was symbolic of the complete acceptance and binding her love...(tied to his forehead)...to his destiny...! He showed how her love gave him strength and his readiness to face any challenge with open arms ...!

Such positivity and optimism in their bond...want it to go on and on and them to set couple goals...😳

Thank you for this insight. For me hanky was always a symbol of care and concern. That piece of cloth used to cleanse and when offered it is to show care...but never thought from a control point of view...

Minu,
You are a treasure. šŸ¤—

What a wonderful analogy with Othelo. And completely in agreement with whatever you have written.

Sameer gave her the handkerchief first (please correct me if wrong). Naina was going to land in a heartbreak of a mess, and her heart would be mended too. In both cases, it was Sameer who would be responsible for it. She fell in the mud because she was after him. And he took care of her then by giving her the cloth and later took care of her heart. Another thing is by giving the handkerchief, Sameer was symbolically asking her to clean up his heart too. He was filled with rage, anger, resentment then...

It was Naina who spilled the ink on his shirt. It was she who played a vital role in paper stealing incident. She unknowingly spilled the ink, and she unknowingly put mark of a thief on him. By giving her handkerchief, she tried her best to correct her mistake. But still, the scars would not go away. Because he is still a thief in many eyes. But the process of his healing started then.

Then she gave him the handkerchief to wipe his tears. The healing process gained speed. All his tears of loneliness, frustration, insecurities, and tears of rage was healed by the gentle touch of her love.

Now that the healing is complete, she again gave him a handkerchief, to protect him. She would protect his heart from now on wards. He is hers to cherish and protect.

Love

Ohh woowww...such a nice analysis Minu...I've read Othello a long, long time back...time to revisit Shakespeare...
I read all the views here, about the connotations of the various handkerchief exchange incidents...I read some post about haq a few months back too...was it you only Minu who posted that?
That was again a very symbolic thing for me...Sameer hardly knew her when she spilled the ink on him...he casually accepted her hanky n then never bothered to return it...he kept it in his back pocket...again which the team highlighted there...
Same with Naina...she's hiding the keys in his hanky while all the drama is being played out in the principal's office...
The handkerchiefs were not just pieces of cloth here as u said, but means to bring two souls closer...harbinger of emotions in their lives, twists n turns which ultimately bought these two where they were destined to be...in each other's arms...

PS: There was another hanky incident, though they don't exchange it...when Naina drops her hanky n Sameer tries to pick up...she agrees n gives a time for their first date. That set the wheels rolling for these two.
