Naina tried telling the truth but Sameer stopped her twice. He proved without doubt that he will save his friends from anything. His friends are very important to him because they are all he has in his life. First, he saved M and P and now Naina. This must have been the worst day of Sameer's life. To make his lie more believable he even took the bhoot blame on himself.

The sweater sequence seemed like it was only to impact Sameer. Didn't make sense at this point.
The monologues he had with the sweater gave me a vibe as though he was asking himself 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun' ? š³ He knows Naina so well by nowāļø - he knows she must have done all this hiding it from everyone, day and night slogged to give him the warmth that his own mother hadn't provided him. He feels he is not worthy of all the love he is getting from Naina. He has always been this bratty kid who always fell short of expectations and whatever he did was never enough for his mom and here he was getting so much care/attention for what ? What had he done to deserve all this love ? He had the right to receive love from his mother but here he was getting more than what he expected from a 'friend'.
