CHAPTER-21

12 YEARS BACK

IYER MANSION, PUNE,

8/06/2005, 6.30 pm

A very anxious Raman walked into the balcony sliding the glass door shut. He was asked to wait in the sitting room, but was too restless to sit still. This deal is going to be the most important deal of his life..His father's fate depended on this. The doctors might have declared that he will not survive another year, but in his heart Raman knew that the revival of their home in Jalandhar, where his father took his first steps would revive his father's lost will to live too...

" Kaka what is it?

He noticed a beautiful young girl, probably seventeen or eighteen, being brought to the garden facing the balcony by an old woman who walked behind her. The woman had her palms over the girl's eyes. An old man , maybe the gardener stood smiling with a glass jar in his hands.

" It is a surprise choti memsahab.

CHOTI MEMSAHAB! So she might be Vishwanathan Iyer's younger daughter...His mother had told him that his elder daughter eloped with a middle class boy..

" KAKA! How many times have I told you to not call me that? the girl admonished.

" OK OK.. the man laughed.

" Devi the man signalled .

The woman took her hand away, while the girl rubbed her eyes and blinked several times. The man handed over the glass jar to her. Raman somehow managed to make out the presence of numerous fireflies in the jar .The girl's face fell when she looked at the the confused fireflies fluttering their wings, doing their best to escape out of their prison..

" Didn't you like the surprise , beti? the old man asked sadly.

" Why did you do such a thing kaka?

" But you said you love those fireflies bacha! Now you can have them with you all the time...

The girl shook her head. She opened the lid of the glass jar keenly avoiding the surprised gasps from the other two.

" I found them beautiful when they were free, kaka..It was enchanting to see them spreading their golden glow all over my garden as they wandered about it..but imprisoning them in a tiny space for my happiness would be outright selfish and cruel, wouldn't it?

Raman could not agree more with the kind girl. Love should always be liberating...

" You are very special, Ishitha beti The old man said with a smile.

Ishitha,hmm! Beautiful name for a beautiful person...

" Mr Bhalla, Mr. Iyer is ready to meet you... Raman turned to walk in the direction of the source of that sound.

Raman and Ishitha were sitting on the bed in their hotel room. Raman held her hands tightly as Ishitha lent a patient ear to whatever he had to say..

" You liked me then?

" You did manage to impress me madrassan...

" Then what happened?

" Then I met your Hitler of a father.

" RAMAN! Ishitha admonished him.

" Marry my daughter, Raman Bhalla, that is your only option...Marry her , give me an heir , you leave with your property.

" Do you even realise how cheap you sound? You are bargaining with your daughter's life like she is a piece of meat!

" MIND YOUR TONGUE! I DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE YOU AN EXPLNATION! Mr Iyer shook Raman by his collar.

" How can you be this unfair to your daughter?

" OH no, I would be unfair to her if I bind you to her for the rest of her life, I love my daughter too much to do that to her! Mr. Iyer said in a chilling voice.

" You know Ishitha, even though your father's demand disgusted me , I had this hope that you would say no to the contract..The kind girl I saw that evening could not have trapped me in a loveless relationship...When I saw your signature in that contract papers, a week later...It hurt like a physical blow...It was the first crack in my sanity.

" Raman I never read those papers! Appa used to buy plots and make investments in my name like crazy those days, it was like an obsession for him..I never really understood those legal terms..I trusted my father and signed those papers like I always do...My innocence then cost me my life, Raman..I realise that now...

Raman wiped the tear drop that escaped from the corner of her eye.

" Our marriage happened. Papa was kept in the dark about the contract. My family was heartbroken...Especially ma..You know she had already chosen a girl for me..

" Shagun?

" Yes..

" Did you love her ?

" No ..not really. She was beautiful...At twenty two you generally get satisfied with a pretty face! I had no sound reason to deny the proposal...

" Why didn't you talk to me about the contract after marriage?

" I was not in a mental frame to do so, Ishitha...I willingly kept myself away from you. I purposefully spent maximum hours of a day in my office. I did not want our relationship grow beyond the physical level..I thought that this way it would be less painful to both of us at the time of our separation. I knew that you were in love with me, which confused me too much.. but...Then you got pregnant.. I taught myself to stay detached, the baby might not even come to know me..I am supposed to leave after its birth..

" Oh Raman!

" But nothing could stop the grief I felt when I came to know that you lost our baby girl!

Raman walked out of the hospital after signing the consent form to abort their child. He had to go from here ...He will die if he stayed here for another second...He took out his phone and contacted Neelu.

" Neelu, Ishitha is in city hospital..She ..She suffered a miscarriage..Be with her, she should not be alone once she gains consciousness..I am leaving for Paris.

" But Bhaiyya-

Raman cut the call as he entered into his car. He was supposed to drive to the airport but somehow he ended up in front of one of their resorts in Delhi. He quickly got into a private suite and ordered vodka. He had to get rid of this terrible pain in his chest..or is it his heart?

He spent every waking hour of the next three days drinking. Every now and then alcohol induced sleep would claim him..then the nightmares would start their torture...

" Papa..you did not want me? Why? the little girl in pigtails asked.

Raman's heart broke at her question. Tears ceaselessly fell down from his eyes..He could not see his daughter's face..she refused to turn back to him..

" No No...I love you so much...I would do anything to have you back, beta..Raman was desperate to convince her ..

" No you are lying! I will never come back to you again...You did not want me,na... The girl started running..

Only then did Raman notice that they were on a cliff. He could hear the roar of water below, thirsty to claim his daughter..

" NO..NO...I am sorry...Please Don't run away from me..beta, please.

Raman started running behind her, but his feet got tangled in something and he fell face down on the ground. Despite his numerous tries, he could not get up. With horror he watched his child approaching the cliff end, before she was about to jump she turned back to look at him one last time.

" NO... Raman screamed as he woke up from yet another nightmare.

He cannot bear this anym,ore..He should convince his daughter..she must know how much he loves her...He will have to go to her..

Raman grabbed the vodka bottle within his arms length and smashed it . He brought the clawed end of the smashed bottle to his neck. With a smile he closed his eyes...
