Part 3
The Rajkumari ran all the way to the other side of the palace, tears threatening to spill over and her heartbeat racing. She slowed down as she reached her chambers and the guards opened the doors for her. She waved away the attendants who came to her, not wanting anyone to see her grief stricken state.
Rajkumari Ishita was experiencing a tirade of emotions, some she understood and some she didn't. Despite believing the King to be a philanderer, seeing him in the arms of a courtesan, had shook her deeply.
Why that was so, she could not say. Taking some deep breaths she tried to calm herself. It wouldn't do to lose her composure as a queen. Then she paced her room to clear her thoughts before coming to stand at the large mirror next to the window.
It was true that after the King's nobel behaviour since their suhaagraat she had assumed he had changed now that she was here. But it seemed that was not the case. While she had accepted her obligation towards him, he had saught gratification elsewhere!
Oh why did it hurt so much, that he hadn't come to her, the Rajkumari lamented and collapsed onto the divan. She chided herself for her naivety for thinking her presence could change a man like that!
Before she could reflect further though, the guards announced the Kings arrival and opened her bedroom doors.
Raja Raman Kumar strode in.
"Rani Ishita, humain aap say kuch baat karni hai" He began as soon as he reached her.
Seeing him properly for the first time, her heart skipped a beat. He was so handsome and athletic! A sprinkling of stubble gave him a distinguished look and his eyes seemed to twinkle with mischief. She broke out into a sweat as he had strode towards her, stopping a few feet away. He was tall and well built and the close proximity of the dominating man unnerved her.
Rajkumari Ishita stood up off the divan in order to be on a level footing with him and quickly composed herself before replying to him, her pride compelling her to act indifferent.
"Mujhay iss naan say na pukarye agar aap mere Rani honay ka paas nahi rakh saktay" Rajkumari Ishita stopped him short.
"To phir?" Raja Raman was enthralled by the fiery exchange, their first. Hay bhagwan she looked so alluring when she was angry, his eyes sidetracked him.
"Rajkumari Ishita" She retorted back, stating her preference to be addressed by her maiden name as she glared at him.
"Teek hai...Rajkumari...humain kehna hai...Aap nay jo kuch bhi nichay dekha wo sirf nazron ka dhoka tha" Raja Saab tried to justify calmly.
But the Rajkumari was in no mood to be fooled again by his web of words.
"Humain is baat say kuch lena dena nahi hai kay neechay kya ho raha tha!" She tried to control her rising anger.
"Aap ko meri baat sunni pady gi. Wo sab kuch humary doston nay shaadi ki khushi main kiya tha. Lekin humain koi dilchaspi nahi thi" He tried to explain understanding her predicament.
"Jee wo dhik raha tha! Barhaal aap yahan say jaye" The Rajkumari dared to contradict him, watching carefully to see whether he would lose patience with her.
"Agar aap ko abhi humari baat main dilchasbi nahi hai to hum is baray main kal baat karain gay" The King concluded that it was pointless arguing at this time as the Rani was clearly too angry to hear his explanation. He would wait to discuss the matter in the morning.
"Humain dilchaspi nahi?!" The Rajkumari exclaimed, unable to control her exasperation "Gair aurat ki bahon main aap thay, nashay main dhutt bhi aap thay, aur dosh aap humain de rahay hain!" The Rajkumaris eyes welled up and she collapsed on the devan behind her, deflated by the injustice of it all. She realised that she was still acting like the 19 year spoilt princess of her fathers home. But the recent events seemed to be too much for her to bear.
Thankfully the King understood this. He smiled inwardly as he detected a tone of possessiveness in his wife's words.
"Rajkumari Ishita, humari taraf dekhye. Kya aap ko hum aisy dhikhtay hai? Kya aap ki nazar main hum itnay buray hain? Aap humari patni hain aur aap kay siwa humari zindagi main aur koi nahi hai. Samjhi aap?" Raja Raman Kumar softened his tone, moving nearer to the Rajkumari as he tried to reassure her.
He longed to tell her what had really overcome him but guessed if he told her his lurid thoughts about her, now, he would lose all credibility. He was sure that the Rajkumari had felt jealous and threatened by the dancers closeness to himself hence the outburst. Which in a twisted way pleased him.
However he heard the Rajkumari continue her outburst, revealing more than she intended.
"Hum bhi to aap say...sirf aap hi ki raah...aap ko yaad...oh!!"
Rajkumari Ishita stopped mid sentence as she realised what she had just blurted. Clasping a hand on her mouth she looked up to meet her husbands waiting eyes. The amused glint which she saw in them told her that Raja Raman understood what his Rani had inadvertently admitted. The King couldn't help the smirk forming on his face as Rajkumari Ishita nervously averted her eyes.
"Aap hum say Kya?" Bemused he watched the queen turn a beautiful shade of red. He couldn't help but tease her.
"Kuch nahi...wo to hum..."
"Aap ko humara intezaar tha?" He watched her squirm under his appraisal. So she had missed him during his absence. Interesting!
"Humain neend aa rahi hai." She started fidgeting with her shawl.
"Teek hai, aap araam kijye. Aaj kay baray main hum kal baat karain gay" Raja Raman Kumar grinned. So the Rajkumari wasn't going to admit her feeling so easily, he thought. Well he would soon remedy that!
"Aap...aap humain akela chod dain, kripa ho gi" The Rajkumari pleaded him to leave, too embarrassed to look him in the eye, her words barely audible.
The King smiled as he retreated without anything further, understanding her need to be alone to reflect on matters. Ironically Raja Raman Kumar wasn't as insensitive and ignorant as the Rajkumari imagined him to be.
However now that he had an inkling of her true feelings, the Rajkumar decided on an onslaught of romance and love in order to compel the proud Rajkumari into admitting her love for him!
"Aag dono taraf barabar lagi hui hai!" He thought, "Bas ab yeh dekhna hai kay pehle kon jalta hai, aap ya hum!"
To be continued...
