Chapter 87 Recap She got up out of the bed with much struggle and till then he had gotten the hold of her doctor. Seeing her pain and struggle, he bent over scooping her into his arms while talking on the phone between his ear and shoulder. Encircling her arms around his neck, she continued to feel the painful contractions and slightly yelped in pain. Placing her into the passenger side of the car, he finally got off the phone and rushed to the driver's seat and began to drive quickly to the hospital...
Chapter 88 As they drove, her on and off pain continued and he drove with one hand the entire time while the other was clasping hers tightly. He drove with the worst road rage ever as he saw her in pain and trying to tolerate it. After what seemed to be forever for them, but was only half an hour they reached the hospital. Upon reaching there, he quickly parked as close as he could to the entrance, helped her in and onto a wheelchair. He continuously held her hand while she was taken into the labor room pressing it in assurance. And she went inside followed by a few nurses, he was pulled over by a ward boy asking him to complete the paperwork needed...
When he was finished filling out with all the forms and signing everything he needed to, he entered the room she was in. He was greeted by the nurse with a warm smile before she went back to drawing Ishita's blood for a test who seemed to be in just as much pain as before. She held out her hand reaching for him and he came forward to hold her hand. Sitting down on the stool next to her, he caressed her hair as she leaned back on the bed relaxing for a minute when her contractions stopped. He sat and watched her answer the nurse's questions and helped her by answering for her when she found it too painful to talk.
Once the questions were done, they stayed in silence with him not wanting to say anything at all considering he didn't know what to say or do especially when there was a nurse in the room. Once she finished checking Ishita's vitals and checked the baby's heartbeat, the nurse finally spoke up breaking the silence in the room.
"You're more than halfway there Mrs. Bhalla, but you're not dilated enough to start pushing. In fact I hate to say it, but your contractions will start getting more painful, however the good news is they won't be that long." The nurse gave them a smile before she walked out for a moment.
"You okay?" He kissed her forehead while she tried to give him a smile.
"Now I am. The unbearable is kind of bearable now. But apparently it's going to be worse."
"You're really strong you know? You've made it till here, now just a while more."
"I don't feel strong anymore."
"But I know you are." He brushed away some of the hair falling in front of her face as she closed her eyes.
The room was quiet for the next while when the nurse returned to watch over Ishita as she dealt with more contractions and he stayed quiet being a silent support to her. He wished for all this to be over every time she yelped in pain and he tried to be strong for her, holding back his emotions on seeing her state.
He had never seen anyone in such pain and it took him back to when Ruhi was born. Almost a year ago, he was in a hospital then as well, but the only suffering he saw was of his daughter. At that time, he wouldn't have ever thought of sitting in a delivery room almost a year later in such a way.
He hadn't ever seen any of this happening and he never thought of sitting silently while his wife cried in pain, holding his wife's hand as a support and continuously attempting be reassuring hoping to distract her from what she was going through. He never thought he was going to be able to go through the numerous emotions of anxiousness, nervousness, and the excitement as he sat next to Ishita waiting for the moment they would have their baby right in front of them. These feelings were just as new for him as they were for her. And he began to wonder if he was going to be able to handle his responsibility towards her and the baby. He was snapped out of his thoughts as he felt his hand being pressed again.
"Ramannn!" She screamed in pain while he ran his free hand over her head.
"I know it's hard, but I know you can do it."
"We've been here for an hour and a half, how much longer?!" She yelled at him unable to bear the pain any longer.
"Just a little bit more."
"Water." She relaxed for a moment as he held out a glass of water in front of her.
"It's weird how those months of nausea, mood swings, crazy cravings, and pain seem like nothing now." He wondered aloud as she sipped on some water while he wiped her forehead with a towel.
"But I think it's going to be worth it... like you told me." She gave him a tired smile.
"So what do you think it's going to be? Still a girl?" She tried to change the conversation like he often did to distract her.
"Correction, I know it's going to be a girl. She's going to be my angel." He went along knowing what she was trying to do.
"I'm the one bearing the pain your angel is giving me."
"Don't worry I'll scold her once she comes into my arms." He innocently said making her smile.
"You're going to be the first to hold him or her, aren't you?"
"No the doctor is." He joked making her chuckle.
"I meant after the doctor."
"Yep! I can't believe it's going to be so soon." He went on talking about how excited he was for this and went back to talking about all he wanted for this baby ever since they got together making her look at him in a trance.
"Raman can I tell you one thing?"
"When did you start asking?" He continued to lighten the mood.
"When I got married to you 8 months back, the one thing wish of mines that had been fulfilled was to have someone's hand to hold onto and a person to be by my side when I deliver the baby."
"By your side?" He looked down at the ground confusing her.
"You're going to stay with me the whole time, aren't you?"
"Ishita, I...I..." He tried to think of an excuse, but failed to. Then he tried to move his hand out of her grip in nervousness while she looked on shocked and confused.
"Raman..."
She refused to let go out his hand that she had held onto this entire time and asked him once again if he was going to stay in the room with her. Nervous about staying and how much support he would have to give inside, he wanted to refuse since it was so hard to see her even now. But then realizing how much pain she was in and her only request to him was to be with her, he agreed to go to be with her the whole time. Kissing her hand, he gave her a broad smile...
"I'm going to be right by you until I have our baby in my arms and you're done with all this."
"I think that's going to be real soon. Ra...Ahhh!" She screamed louder than she ever had clutching onto her stomach gripping on his hand tighter than ever in the process.
"Ishita!" He stood up as the nurse rushed to her checking on her. Only in a matter of a few moments, everyone in that room knew the baby was going to be delivered at any moment.
"I'm getting the doctor, just one minute. Now Mrs. Bhalla you need to just keep on breathing and Mr. Bhalla just try to keep yourselves calm." Saying so the nurse rushed out quickly as another nurse walked in.
She continued to crush his hand while she expressed her pain and he knew he couldn't complain. Instead he stood quiet rubbing her hand, patting her head and doing anything to give her any small amount of ease he could. Unable to take any more of the strong contractions, she felt frustrated, exhausted and emotional so she ended up yelling at no one in particular.
"Where is the doctor?!"
"Ishita, she said she's coming in a minute." Raman was the unfortunate one who answer her question.
"I don't have a minute!" She snapped at him while he knew not to do anything, but agree with her.
"Please relax. Just breathe."
"Shut up Raman!" He got yelled at again and stayed quiet, in fact in relief as the doctor walked in at the same moment calming her down a bit.
As the doctor instructed her to start pushing once the next contraction began, Raman was the one who become the most nervous person in the room. He was scared of what would happen and if everything would be okay. Remembering his last child's birth, his mind filled with horrible thoughts he tried to brush away. He wanted to run out and pour out his crazy whirlpool of emotions, but when she took her free hand and placed it on his as well, he looked at her.
Until now she was also feeling the same feelings of a first time parent just as he had been, but now she couldn't even go through any other emotion than pain. He remembered what he had told her moments back and knew if there was any time to show what he could do for her, it was now.He kept his eyes on her wiping the sweat on her forehead, encouraging her to keep going, and listening to her every round of yelling without a word as she was shouting in pain.
It was 25 minutes later, she lay back on the bed breathing heavily as she felt too tired to go on, it seemed like every bone in her body ached and the constant pain of contractions didn't help. Even with all the encouragement and support, she felt overwhelmed to do this any further. It was becoming too hard to continue pushing and that's exactly what she told her husband.
He didn't do anything, but kiss her forehead and told it's okay. He had a smile lingering on his face when he told it was okay to wait and looked over at the doctor making the chaos stop for a moment. She looked at him surprised he hadn't snapped considering his anger and even now he was acting so patient. Forwarding her more water, he ran his hand over her head before she gave him a smile making the chaos resume. And this time it was only 10 minutes before the hustle in the room stopped and in a moment all they heard were the cries of a baby that filled the room...
As she leaned back onto the bed, her eyes could see her baby clearly through her tears. The sight of the tiny life that had grown in her for months, the baby that brought her and Raman together, the baby he had pampered before its birth, the baby whose kicks and movement had been in her was right there in front of her. And it was because of her; she had brought this child of hers into this world, something no one else except her could do. She had brought another living being into this world and the surreal thought brought a smile to her face while tears fell from her eyes.
He was feeling no different than her. He couldn't stop his eyes from watering as he watched their little baby cry in the doctor's arms. There was the baby he had talked to, the baby he accepted without a thought, the baby who he spent months waiting eagerly for, the one that brought him and Ishita together and there was the baby who was his. It seemed so magical and unbelievable that the tiny life was not there a moment ago and now there was their child right in front of their eyes. He wiped off his tears and smiled through the new ones forming as they looked at each other.
They had become parents to this child together...
"Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Bhalla, here's your son." The doctor placed their baby on her chest for a minute.
She let her tears flow when the newborn placed his hand on her chest as if recognizing her touch and he couldn't stop his own tears seeing what had just transpired in front of his eyes. The bond their son had created with her by just being in her womb pleasantly surprised both of them. After a few moments when a nurse took the baby from her to clean him up and have a pediatrician examine him, she watched his eyes following their son with a longing in his eyes.
"It's just 2 minutes, and then you can hold him." She took his hand into hers while he wiped off his tears.
"Ishita, he's actually here." He told her in awe making her smile despite her entire body aching.
"Mr. Bhalla I told you I was carrying our son. So your wish is still a wish." She joked with him.
"I just wished for a healthy baby for more than anything. And anyways we should always leave something for the next time. The third one will be a girl for sure!" He made her blush while he chuckled at her, but suddenly she saw his hand.
She had dug her nails into his hand so badly while she was giving birth that here was a drop of blood on his palm.
"Raman! I did that?!" She looked at him sadly while he noticed the blood when she pointed it out.
"Oh I didn't see that. I'll put a band aid later." He wanted to stay with her in case anything happened.
"Go get one now, I'm okay now." She asked him worried about what she did and he was about to leave when the doctor came by her side with an injection in her hand. He sat back down looking at Ishita who once again told him that she was okay.
"She's fine." The doctor told him with a smile seeing his concern. Ishita also pressed his hand softly asking him to go...
~~~~~
He walked out of the room with a wide grin on his face. He sat down on the bench right outside and let out his crazy emotions. He cried, smiled, cried again and smiled once again seeming mad as he thought about everything that just took place in the last 2 and a half hours of his life. He had become a father of 2 children and witness the most beautiful experience he ever could.
Once he composed himself, he pulled out his phone to tell everyone about their new baby. He knew for sure his mother would be awake knowing they had gone to the hospital. He called the landline unable to his excitement on breaking the news to her...
"Hello Raman, what happened?!" His mother immediately asked seeing his number.
"Maa, I...it..." His tears of happiness returned while his mother was worried on hearing his stammering knowing her son was emotional and vulnerable in such situations considering Ruhi. She became impatient to what was going on there and asked him once again.
"Raman beta what happened?! Is everything alright?!"
"Maa, everything is fine. Ishita just delivered. It's a boy!"
"Oh that's great news! Are they both okay?"
"They are fine! You know he's so tiny and he was crying so loudly when he was born. Maa he's just so precious."
"God bless you all. I'm so happy today, I'm going to tell the entire society! Everyone will have a party!"
"That's fine Maa, but how is Ruhi?"
"She's good, she was mad when she woke up but she's okay now. I'll bring her to the hospital in a little bit as well as something for you to eat. You've been there for a while now."
"That's great! Okay Maa, I'm going to call Amma and Appa now."
"Sure, I'll come once I get Ruhi ready and some breakfast for you."
"Bye." He hung up the phone with a smile on his face.
He scrolled to the number of the Iyer residence, but then reconsidered seeing the time. He thought for a moment and decided to call anyways knowing they would want this news as soon as they could.
"Hello." He heard Appa's voice.
"Appa, it's me Raman."
"Beta you're calling this early in the morning, is everything okay?"
"Actually I'm in the hospital. I called to tell you...congratulations Appa, Ishita just had a baby boy!" He didn't hear anything from the other line for a moment and assumed his father-in-law was taking in what he had just told him.
In a minute he heard Appa calling out to Amma and Mihika who rushed to the phone wondering what was happening. After a moment of commotion on the other line, he finally heard someone talking to him.
"Raman, what happened kanna? Your Appa is just crying and mentioning a hospital!" Amma asked him.
"Is Akka okay?!" Mihika chimed in worrying her mother further.
"Ishita is fine. In fact Appa is crying because I just congratulated him. Amma you're a grandmother now to our son! Ishita just had a baby boy!"
"Raman...I...really..." She passed the phone over to Mihika as she was in the same state as Appa.
"Jiju, is everything okay with Akka and the baby?"
"Everything is fine. Ishita's resting and the baby is being examined."
"Jiju I'll call you back in a bit, Amma and Appa are just overwhelmed right now."
"No problem, I'll talk to you later."
"Bye, oh and congrats now dad of 2." She teased him making him chuckle.
"Congrats to you two, chitti of 2!"
"At least you pronounced it right. Bye!" He hung up the phone with a smile and went back to Ishita's room...
~~~~~
His wife lay on the bed while there was one nurse checking on Ishita's blood pressure while the doctor was about to leave the room. She come up to him and he immediately asked...
"How is Ishita?"
"She's doing great, just tired. Your son is absolutely fine as well. He's a good 7 pounds and very healthy."
"Thank you so much!" He shook the doctor's hand thank God for the safe delivery.
"Congratulations once again!" The doctor smiled at him before she left the room followed by the nurse leaving the couple alone...
