Were they actually married or just engaged? If they weren't married- how did they discover that ishita couldn't have kids?

Ishita was in love with Subbu on the day of their engagement while he was trying to put the ring she faints and they rush her to hospital were they found out the stomach TB she got from childhood may be a problem in conceiving that is why Subbu broke the relationship.

They were neither married nor engaged. Just before their engagement Ishita fell down on the floor and then it was revealed by the doctor that Ishita couldn't conceive.
