Chapter 20 They both share an eye lock as they tried to tell the other they would never been alone. They didn't even realize they were holding hands and just wanted to stay like this until they were sure that they would never be left alone again. Their eye lock was broken by the ringing of Raman's phone. They moved their hands apart and hid their small smiles as they realized they had been holding hands. Ishita walked over to Ruhi while Raman answered the call...
"Hello Jiju?" a voice asked on the other side. For a second Raman wondered who called and realize it was Mihika. He couldn't believe she was calling him, since they had hardly talked after the wedding.
"Mihika?! How are you?"
"I'm fine, actually I wanted to talk to Akka, could you please get her on the line if she is around. I called her phone, but she didn't pick up."
"Hold on let me give it Ishita!"
He handed the phone to Ishita who asked him what Mihika wanted to say with her eyes. He shrugged his shoulders and handed the phone over as he grabbed Ruhi and sat on the bed tickling her and playing with her and her toys. She chatted with Mihika about general things, but then he saw her walk to the corner and she started to talk quietly over the phone. He wondered why she needed to walk away, but then shrugged it off as a personal thing between the two sisters and continue to enjoy his time with his daughter.
As Ishita came back to the duo who were holding their stomach laughing and giggling, she handed his phone back to him as he asked her if there was any problem...
"It's nothing. She always scares me by building up & exaggerating her worries and it turns out to be nothing."
"Oh okay then. So...?"
"So what?"
"Are you okay now?" He asked almost scared of her answer. Luckily she nodded positively and he relaxed as she smiled properly now. He sighed and then looked over at the clock and her eyes followed. They realized he had been home for much longer than he intended to and it was time for him to go back. She looked at him asking him...
"Raman...are you going now?" She asked with a hope that he might stay back longer after the conversation they just had and he knew she already knew the answer and was still asking him, so...
"Do you want me to stay back with you?"
"No I was just asking...just in general."
"I'll go now?" He asked her confirming almost wondering aloud if she would ask him to stay back. She was confused whether he was telling her or asking her. She didn't want to embarrass herself by assuming he was asking her so chose to say something that would make it seem like she could be replying to both things...
"I guess so."
They both moved out of their room slightly disappointed. He gathered his things and headed to the door to leave when the doorbell rang. She quietly adjusted the cushions on the sofa in case someone important had come as he opened the door to a smiling Vandita.
Raman greeted her with a hug as Ishita stood behind him almost not wanting to be around anyone other than him right now. Vandita said a hello to her only to receive a hi back and nothing else. Realzing the awkwardness created Raman tried to break the ice...
"So Vandita what brings you here?"
"Actually I wanted to know if you two would be free tonight. To come to our place for dinner?"
Raman turned slightly towards Ishita who was almost next to him now and she slight nodded in a positive way assuring him she was okay with going for dinner at Bala and Vandita's.
"Sure! We will drop by at around..."
"7?"
"Perfect, but now I have to head out, so please excuse me ladies." Asking the women to let him go as he was getting a call from his office. As he left the two women awkwardly stood in front of each other, both not knowing what to say. And then Ishita finally noticed Vandita was still standing by the door, so...
"Come inside please..."
As Vandita stepped in, she looked at Ishita who kept looking at her feet and playing with her hands not knowing what to do. Finally she spoke up knowing there were something she needed to say...
"Ishita..."
"Yea..." Ishita finally looked up at her.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have reacted the way I did that day, but I just ...I mean it was so sudden, so I couldn't understand and I just reacted. Bala and I understand now that we shouldn't interfere in your lives. We're both sorry."
"It's okay. Many people react like that. I didn't feel bad about it." She lied about not feeling bad about her words. But then she remembered the conversation Raman and her just had inside and a faint smile appeared on her face. But her sentence, Vandita thought she might still be upset because of her words the other day.
"What' wrong? Is it what I said? Honestly I am really-"
"No, I'm fine." She smiled fully to her as she remembered what Raman had just told her.
"Oh okay! Well then I should get going now, have to prepare for tonight."
As Vandita turned to leave, her son came out rubbing his eyes sleepily. She walked over to him and picked him up and he put his head on her shoulder. Just out of curiosity, Ishita asked her...
"What happened to him? He was so happy the other day and today..."
"I think he might be coming down with a fever."
"Then how you take care of him and do everything else?" she asked feeling bad for her since she would have to cook for all of them and take care of her sick child.
"I will manage, it's all okay." Vandita replied, but Ishita still felt bad and offered to help...
"Should I watch him for you? So you can work freely?"
"Would you do that?" Vandita asked gratefully.
"Of course, I will be over in 10 minutes with Ruhi."
~~~~~~
As she entered their home with Ruhi cocooned in her arms, it felt her own home back in Delhi. As if she could imagine Amma running around in the kitchen and Mihika just sitting on the table busy on her laptop as Appa sat on the couch calling for his newspaper. It had a striking similarity to the home she grew up in and just being here gave her a sense of peace. Vandita came over to her giving her a huge hug thanking her and she hugged her back. She led her to Shravan's room and just asked her to watch him. She sat on a small chair as he lay down going to sleep and she also put Ruhi to sleep in the process. As she saw the two kids asleep, she walked outside and placed the sleeping Ruhi on the divan and went over to the kitchen where she asked...
"So what are you planning to make?"
"Just some curry, rice, and some paysam since it's a special dinner held for you." Vandita smiled at her.
"Then what should I help with?"
"Nothing, you just sit. This dinner is to welcome you, not to make you cook it!"
"It's not a problem and anyways I don't have anything to do. So this way you can finish the preparations and I will also get rid of my boredom."
"Okay then! You can help with cutting the vegetables while I start the rice."
As they stood in the kitchen working the meal, Vandita tried to start a conversation since she wanted to know more about Ishita who did seem like a nice person...
"So have you adjusted well into the house and family?"
"I think I've made a start. It was kind of hard with his relatives at first since he's a Punjabi, but with him and Ruhi, it's much easier to be around. And the house was so easy to adjust to, Raman and Mummyji made it so easy for me."
"I knew it! I guessed from your name you weren't Punjabi, but never got around to asking you!"
"Well, I was Ishita Iyer before I got married."
"Iyer?! You're South Indian as well?"
"Yea..."
"Nice! I'm sure Raman annoys you for South Indian food all the time, especially dosas."
"Raman and dosas? I can't even imagine that. He gorges on the Punjabi food I make even though it's horribly cooked off a recipe book and he loves his junk food, but South Indian? No way!"
"Yes way! He loves coming over here to eat! Trust me, I know him for over 5 years. Even recently when Ruhi was born, I used send him food to the hospital because it was the only thing he would eat after a lot persuasion, but he would eat it. You should make some for him and he will not leave anything for you."
"Then I will definitely try it!"
"Just watch him today at the dinner. He will eat like no tomorrow."
"Don't say that about him! He just likes his food, there's nothing wrong in that!"
"Defensive!"
They both stopped what they were doing, looked at each other and started to laugh over their conversation. As they continued talking and laughing, Raman called in between and his call was received by a laughing Ishita. He smiled sitting at his desk shuffling through papers as he heard her laughter. He wondered what happened and she told him she was at Vandita's. He was glad to know she was feeling better around Vandita and made a note to himself to have Ishita and Vandita meet up once in a while. He didn't want to bother her and hung up after asking how she and Ruhi were doing and if she had taken her vitamins on time. After making sure things were okay at home, he hung up the phone letting Ishita spend time with her new friend and neighbour...
