It was Rinki's wedding ceremony in the evening, and ofcourse, the Bhalla house was a noisathon with the last minute preparations and ceremonies on in full swing.
"Oye Ishita, please get me the sweets if they hav come, I need to start the ceremony!" Toshiji commanded Ishita as she was herself busy with Simmi and a few of her female relatives in setting up d stage for a few morning rituals that needed to be done.
"Just coming mummyji!" Ishita responded.
"Shravu, Ruhi stop running around and sit on the bedsheet, we are gonna make Rinki bua wear the choora in some time! Come on good babies!" Ishita tried to get the kids in control as she headed towards her mother in law with the Mithai.
Ruhi: "Ishima, first please see my Mehendi(Henna Design)!"
"Wow Ruhi, d color n the design is beautiful!" Ishita spoke taking one of her daughters hands in hers.
Ishita: "Now go and sit with Simmi bua and Pammi aunti, Ishima will join you in some time"
Ruhi:"Ok Ishima!"
Raman and Romi were busy instructing the caterers and decorators, of course it was their little sister's wedding, they wanted everything to be perfect.
"Raman, please come now..we are about to start!" Ishita shouted.
" Lokesh, please come forward, you are the maternal uncle, you need to put on d Choora" Toshiji called her brother. (Choora is the traditional Punjabi bangle set that brides wear on their wedding day- they hv to wear it upto 40 days after d wedding. Its the maternal Uncle who is supposed to put on the choora on the bride's hands. Here is a pic of d choora:
"Ishita, Raman, Romi, Madrasan, pls come, we r abt to start!" Toshiji shouted.
Ishita came and sat down on the bedsheet laid on the floor, she covered her head with a chunni. Raman also joined her and soon the men of the house also covered their heads with a hankerchief.
"Aaye haye..my daughter looks so pretty, sadke jaawan main tere utte" Toshiji blessed Rinki, who was dressed in a pretty baby pink salwar kameez.
The Choora was kept soaked in a bowl full of milk-water and rose petals.
"Darling, bring your hand forward, Mamaji will make you wear the choora" Toshiji took Rinki's hand and engaged her brother so that they could start performing the ceremony.
Ruhi came and sat on Ishita's lap.
Ruhi: "Ishima, I also want the Choora! Its so pretty"
Ishita: " Baby only brides wear dis. Ishima wore it when she got married remember! Wen Roo will get married, she will also wear it, ok!"
Ruhi: "Ok Ishima, I wanna grow up quickly and get married, so that I can wear the Choora and dress up like a bride!"
Ishita smiled and Raman patted his daughter lovingly on the head.
As Lokeshji was putting bangles one by one on Rinki's hands,
Ishita's eyes were transfixed on her, the whole scene took her down memory lane: her own wedding, the early days of her own marriage, memories of her own Choora..
She remembered how lovingly Toshiji had put on the choora on her hands, even though she had never admired Ishita initially, it had taken a lot of time for Ishita to make place in her heart.
She remembered all her "Choora-moments" with her very own husband..a smile crept on her lips..
Ye kya pehan rakha hai haathon mein..nikal phenko isko..jahan lagi hai wahi Choora de maara hai (What is dis you r wearing in ur hands, throw it away, you are hitting me with the Choora on my wound)
Kahan lagi tumko, bas aise hi, naatak! (I dont see tht its hurting u, u r just acting!)
She chuckled remembering how they never got along during those initial days of their marriage. But there were sparks she had felt from the very beginning..there was something about his touch, she always knew.
Everytime he would grab her hand, everytime he would grab her choora/pull her holding her choora, she got that special feeling, that husband-like feeling, that u r mine type of feeling. And no matter how much her own ego and stubbornness, she would always give in when it came to him, such was his effect on her.
That time when he had held her tightly when she had gotten drunk at amma's anniversary.. that time while dancing during holi..

Those pati-ke-naam ki cheezein (husband-related things).. the sindoor(vermelion), the mangalsutra, the Choora- at the time of her wedding she had no realisation of the meaning that these props held.
Infact she had zero expectations from the marriage, afterall it was a marriage sirf Ruhi ke liye. Moreover she never believed that love would come to her life again, she had lost faith in the entire concept of love, she had started to believe that whole institution of marriage was overrated.
But then this wedding had changed her life completely and reinstated all her lost faith. This marriage had fulfilled her, it gave her everything..things she had never imagined, things she had stopped hoping for- love, a loving family, kids, and now somewhere inside even a hope of being able to deliver her own child. More importantly, it gave her sense of security, the feeling of belonging to someone and being loved unconditionally, a feeling of completeness.
In disguise, she had infact gotten the best possible life partner, a wonderful companion, who she knew would support her through thick and thin, who would always take care of her, and she knew she would be there for him, always. And not to forget, what a handsome man he was! 😉
