Hello, so as I watched the 1 year special episode my eyes were stuck on Ruhi and her cute antics but my heart melted when I saw her wide smile with a missing tooth. I was hoping if they could incorporate this into the show but since I do not make the show and no one cares what I think and rightly so lol, I figured why not just write a little something that I would have liked to see on TV. This is a very small scene between Ruhi and her parents, hope you all enjoy it.
PS: I do not write OS/FF and stories in general because I fear that I may steer the characters far away from their actual characterization. But since I adored Ruhi and her missing tooth smile, I put aside my doubts and wrote this little thing down.
Not Proof read as usual.
The tooth fairy
After Mihika's attempt at suicide everyone in the Iyer and Bhalla household was on high alert, every little thing was handled with care and Mihika was never left alone even for a minute lest she would plunge in the dark corners of selfpity and attempt something stupid. The elders in the family accompanied Mihika during the day and at night the duty to take care of Mihika fell on Ishita. For a last 10 days Ishita was sleeping with Mihika, leaving Raman in charge of putting Ruhi to bed, making sure her homework was done and her bag was packed for school.
Raman and Ishita didn't mind helping out family and in fact they were the 1st ones to sacrifice their private lives for others but these days these small private sacrifice of their time started bothering them. Was it because they were slowly moving forward in their relationship, or was it because they never got a chance to confess their feelings for each other, whatever the reason, Ishita and Raman started minding this distance between them brought on by these unwanted circumstances. A month ago, Raman wouldn't even have noticed Ishita not being in his bedroom but for the past few weeks the dynamics of their relationship changed, both of them looked forward to retiring to their room after dinner to catch up with each other's day, talk about Ruhi's antics, or the constant fighting between their mothers. Much to Raman's delight, Ishita had started sleeping on the bed abandoning the couch, their relationship was slowly transforming into a normal husband wife relationship but right when progress was being made between them, the Ashok-Shagun wedding fiasco happened creating chaos in all their lives. Now Mihika needed support and that meant the return of solitude to Raman and his lonely bed.
Tonight was no different, after dinner Ishita headed over to the Iyer residence to accompany Mihika while Raman tried to put Ruhi to bed by reading her a story. For Raman a simple task of reading a bedtime story to his daughter seemed daunting without Ishita, he was used to Ishita reading a bedtime story while Raman cuddled with Ruhi, 10 minutes into story time and the father daughter duo would start snoring in unison. With Ishita gone, he tried to narrate a story to Ruhi and failed miserably so he told Ruhi.
Raman: Listen don't tell Ishima but we are going to turn on the TV and let's hope we get sleepy soon, deal?
Ruhi: Deal, can you put cartoon network on pleaasseee
Raman: No way! Papa is not buddhu.
Ruhi: Okay then Ruhi is not buddhu so no cricket either!
Raman: Chant kahi ki, bilkul apni Ishima pe gaye hai, okay let's turn on the radio and try go to bed.
Raman turned on the radio and the song Aage bhi Jaane tu played
Aage Bhi Jaane Na Tu, Peechhe Bhi Jaane Na Tu
Jo Bhi Hai, Bas Yahi Ek Pal Hai
Aage Bhi Jaane Na Tu
With Ruhi secured in his arms, he tried to listen to Ruhi's stories from the day but his mind kept on wandering to the song playing in the background. He started thinking about the past moments that he lost fighting with Ishita and uncertainty of the future scared him, he started pondering about time and it's fickle nature, he realized that no amount of power, prestige and money could control time! Time marches to no ones beat, it certainly doesn't march to a CEO's beat and neither does it march to a dentist's beat.
All of a sudden he stopped hearing Ruhi's blabbering and he started hearing some faint sobs, he looked down and saw Ruhi lying in his embrace looking up to him while holding a tooth in her hand with eyes full of tears. Raman jumped up and took Ruhi in his arms, wiped her tears and tried to calm her down.
Anjaane Saayo Ka Raaho Mein Dera Hai
Andekhi Baaho Ne Ham Sabko Ghera Hai
Ye Pal Ujaala Hai Baaqi Andhera Hai
Ye Pal Gawaana Na Ye Pal Hi Tera Hai
Jeene Waale Soch Le Yahi Waqt Hai Kar Le Puri Aarzoo
Aage Bhi ...
While pacifying Ruhi and admiring the innocence of a child crying at the loss of a tooth which will eventually grow back, he realized that this moment, the present, is where life belongs. He looked around his room, and then stared at his daughter holding her tooth sobbing ever so faintly, he looked to the other side of the bed and then looked down at Ruhi yet again. He realized that this moment of a child losing his/her tooth maybe insignificant to others but for parents especially a parent who became a parent by choice and not by blood, this moment is a big moment. He picked up Ruhi in his arms and headed to the Iyer house, he wanted to live this moment with his wife, he wanted to soothe their daughter on her loss o f a tooth together, he wanted to see the happiness in her eyes at the sight of their daughter growing up.
Raman banging on Mihika's door.
Raman: Ishita open the door, hello? Ishita!
Ishita opens the door and gets worried seeing Ruhi and her little eyes that were red, by all that crying, being held by Raman. She immediately took Ruhi from his arms and without asking any questions, started coddling and cradling Ruhi in her lap. While comforting Ruhi she looked at him and silently with her eyes enquired about the situation. Raman with his eyes and a few gestures explained the endearing situation of Ruhi losing her 1st baby tooth and how she burst into tears, they both smiled at each other, while Ishita kept on rocking Ruhi back and forth in her arms, and Raman stood next to them smiling at this beautiful sight. Within no time, Ruhi fell asleep in her mother's comforting embrace; Raman grabbed Ruhi from Ishita's lap and gestured Ishita to follow him to their bedroom.
Raman put Ruhi on their bed and grabbed the tooth from her tiny protective hands, the radio was still playing the song, the window to their room was letting in the cold Delhi breeze and the moon light was just bright enough to shoo away the black darkness,
Is Pal Ke Saaye Mein Apna Thhikaana Hai
Is Pal Ke Aage Hi Har Shae Fasaana Hai
Kal Kisne Dekha Hai Kal Kisne Jaana Hai
Is Pal Se Paayega Jo Tujhko Paana Hai
Jeene Waale Soch Le Yahi Waqt Hai Kar Le Puri Aarzoo
Aage Bhi ...
Raman: Are you listening to the song
Ishita: Yeah but since when did you like such soothing songs, I thought your panjabi taste would be more tuned with Bhangra and pop music
Raman: Yaar bakwaas band karo, ye batao kuck sikhi iss gane se
Ishita: Kya sekhna hai, aap sikhado
Raman holds her hand and pulls her towards the couch, they both sit staring out at the sky gazing at the stars.
Raman: Ishita jo guzar gaya so kal tha, jo ayega who bhi kal hoga par is guzre hue kal and aane wale kal ke beech ham aaj ko kho rahe hain. Apni families ke kal thik karte karte hum apne...tumhara aur mera aaj kho rahe hai.
Ishita: Hmmm
Raman: Hmmm? Tumhara dimag kharab hain kya, bas hmmm! Waise toh choti si baat pe, 2 page ka lecture aur aaj hum 10 dino baad bat kar rahe hai aur tum sirf kehti ho, hmmm.
Ishita: Usss tare ko dekh rahe ho aap? Woh north star, main harroz usse dekh ke soti thi, usse baatein karti thi, apna dil ka haal sunati thi par pechle 1 month se main aapko dekh ke soti hoon, apse baatein karti hon, and apna del ka haal sunati hoon. Aaj 1 month ke baad mere dost North star se mulakat hui hai. Aur abhi apne hi samjhaya ki hame apne aaj main rehna chahiye, so I am focusing on my present and saying hi to my long lost friend, the North Star
Raman: Yaar din be din chant hoti ja rahi ho aur tumhara y...
Ishita cuts Raman in the middle of the sentence
Ishita: Waise apni tariff suni ya nahi..maine kaha ki aap mere ab North star ho, my guiding light.
Raman: Tabhi main sochu kuch toh gadbad hai, tumhari tabyat theek nahi hai..meri tariff woh bhi itni raat ko.
Ishita: Kuch bhi, acha suno you could have easily pacified Ruhi so why did you bring her over to me?
Raman: Yaad hai maine kaha tha, Yaadon ka kya hai, nayi ban gayengi...tumhari aur meri...hamari' ...bas yeh hamari yaadein hain, hamari beti badi ho rahi hai, aaj uske pehle baby tooth gira, and I wanted you to be a part of this memory, Ruhi is as much your daughter as she is mine and her mother deserves to be a part of this very important moment of her life. Also I don't know about you but the song taught me to live in the moment and not worry about the past or the future so I marched into the Madrasi house to savor this moment of ours.
Ishita had tears in her eyes and before she could say anything.
Raman: Waise daaton ka department toh tumhara hai toh tumhara hona toh banta hain, and how can papa be the tooth fairy? Papa can scare away the monsters under the bed but papa can't be the tooth fairy now can he? We need Ishima to be the tooth fairy, so here take this tooth, hide it and put some money under Ruhi's pillow. Go do your tooth fairy duties while I make a quick phone call.
Ishita: Okay tooth fairy duties done, I am going to head back to my older sis duties.
Raman: What about your wife duties.
Ishita: Matlab?
Raman: Kaun si biwi apne handsome pati ko raat ko chod ke jati hai? Ab matlab samjhi ya aur paas ake samjhaun
Ishita: Ravan kumar aapko yeh kya hua hai, aur main Mihika ko kaise akela chodo
Raman: Don't worry it's taken care off, Mihir is already with her. Just because tum aur main Buddha buddhi hain, iske matlab ye toh nahi ki everyone should be like us, who jawan hai let them have some fun.
Ishita: Acha toh mere buddhe ne puri planning karke rakhi thi
Raman: Waise tumhe punishment milegi
Ishita: Kyun maine kya kiya?
Raman: How can you think I would leave Mihika alone in such a state, I mean thik hai tumhara diwana ho chala hoon par itna bhi nahi ki apni aadhi gharwali ko ignore karoon, so you deserve a punishment.
Ishita: Kuch bhi.
Raman: Yaad hain maine kaha tha, agli baar punishment main Ishimaa se loonga' bas to punishment de do and aur mujhse punishment le lo.
With that he takes her in an embrace and pecks her on both her cheeks.
Is Pal Ke Jalwo Ne Mehfil Sawaari Hai
Is Pal Ki Garmi Ne Dhadkan Ubhaari Hai
Is Pal Ke Hone Se Duniya Hamaari Hai
Ye Pal Jo Dekho To Sadiyo Pe Bhaari Hai
Jeene Waale Soch Le Yahi Waqt Hai Kar Le Purii Aarzoo
Aage Bhi ...
With the blessing of the tooth fairy, this jodi of Buddha buddhi swayed to the song playing on the radio while their daughter slept peacefully in the embrace of their love.
Note: The inner buddhi in me only allowed me to write till the peck on the cheek, how the night progresses I leave it up to your imagination. 😆
