[contd]
She lay awake on her bed. Sleep was stolen right on the day she had met him but today it was a strange fear that gripped her and kept her away from sleep. Next day, she would be Mrs Bhalla and same time tomorrow, she would be in his room, with him and most probably sharing his bed. She didn't know how she would keep herself away from him. Now, at this moment, she feared herself more than him because he was strictly adhering to his promise and not touching her. But the reality she discovered lately was that he didn't have to touch her to melt and flame her up in passion.
Today at the sangeet, they just just stood close, and only their eyes met but she could feel his passion throbbing into her and strumming her with the same. She was so heated up that she felt as if he was making soft gentle love to her.
If just the proximity had this effect on her, how it would feel if he really did it? Such erotic thoughts made her wriggle on the bed. She felt helpless due to her own crazy heart.
"Arggg...get a grip girl," She cursed and scolded herself for having set free her crazy heart and mind to dwell into such sinful thoughts and desires. The worst part was that she couldn't deny atleast to herself was that she was liking this feel and his impact on her.
He was right. Her eyes, her body never lied. The weird sensations he invoked inside her were never a lie though she keeps battling against it. She could only pray and hoped to find some last retort to cling onto her adamant ego and stick to her decision to never surrender to his lust and raw physical needs.
It wasn't dawn yet and it was time for her to get up and deck up for the early morning muhurtham. She was even contemplating a silly idea of just cancelling this marriage when Mihika barged in gathering up her own saree pleats. She had come to help her sister dress up. She was paranoid seeing her Ishu akka still in bed.
"Akka, why aren't you getting up? If periyamma sees you like this, she will have a panic attack...get up akka...beautician will be here any moment...Bala jeeju has already left to bring her"
Ishita had heard the alarm but switched it off and tried to doze off. Her lame reason being that if the bride was late to the muhurtham, the marriage would stop. She mocked her own thoughts when Mihika teasingly hushed up next to her and whispered in excitement, "I heard Vandu akka and periyamma talking about your shanti muhurtham...you are so lucky akka...you don't have to wait for it...its turned out that today is a good day...so shanti muhurtham..."
Mihika winked naughtily and her excitement only ridiculed Ishita's mind state. She showed a thumbs up only to be smacked by Ishita's pillow.
"I am thinking of ways of stopping this muhurtham and you are..."
Her words ceased realizing that she had let out words that weren't meant to be. Mihika dropped her saree pleats and rushed to her akka's side, "Akka, what's wrong? Aren't you happy with this wedding? Did you fight with Raman jeeju?"
Her questions were endless and Ishita struggled to stop her from talking, "Shhh...how many questions Mihika? And where have you dragged a simple thing to?"
MIhika then probed, "then akka, you better tell me what the simple thing is"
Ishita managed to reason it, "Ho ho Mihika, I was just sleepy and at that moment sleep was on top of my mind...there is nothing else wrong, understand?"
MIhika smiled at her akka's childish reason and then dragged her out playfully, "then come on get up...let me get you ready for jeeju"
Ishita glared and Mihika naughtily corrected, "Don't glare at me akka...I meant for the shaadi..."
Her teasing and double meaning dialogs continued all through the dressing up. She was dressed in the nine yards madisaar which was the traditional attire for marriage. She looked like a typical South Indian Iyer girl. One thought which roamed in her mind was whether Raman will like her even in this attire. She chided herself but couldn't stop the thoughts.
The wedding wasn't a simple affair but then Raman had no choice but go through the torture of getting up at 5 for the sake of his madrasan. He knew that Jhansi ki rani might just cancel the wedding if he presses for a Punjabi wedding. He knew that it was impossible for her to reject him but her stubborn ego was more than enough for her to show off that she wasn't one bit interested in marrying him. She just needed a reason to stay away from him and get out of this entire affair.
The families had discussed and the usual 2 day long wedding rituals was cut short to one day. The haldi, mehndi and sangeet were done as part of Punjabi functions and the main wedding ritual was in South Indian style
Mihika sent a glimpse of his bride to him. He laughed at the first sight but then he had to agree that she looked cute and pretty even in that. At the venue, his eyes strained to get a glimpse and couldn't wait for the bride to be called to the mandap.
And when the time finally came, he saw her being brought down by an array of young girls. Her aunty and sisters leading the way. Her hand safely entwined with Mihika's. She looked lovely and gorgeous. The haldi effect made her glow. The photograph that MIhika sent had shown him just a small glimpse of her ravishing look.
Raman followed all their customs and traditions under the guidance of Bala and appa. Wearing a veshti was quite new to him and tough too but he did oblige to everything. She could see how enthusiastic he was for the wedding. She did feel a tinge of guilt for her negative thoughts about this marriage but her confusion just refused to leave her.
He made her wear the toe ring by placing her leg on the grind stone. They were shown the Dhruva nakshatram and the arundati nakshatram. Every ritual had its own significance which were eventually meant for the martial bliss and togetherness of the married couple.
The homam(poojas) were all performed in the right way seeking blessings from all.
Despite the fire and the smoke, he seemed least affected and his stealing glances at his bride never ceased but her state was a little different. She sat there as if in a complete trance, just obeying and obliging to the commands of her elders duly fulfilling everything that the wedding rituals needed her to do. Her sisters stood behind tugging and teasing her to smile. They were trying their best to bring her out of the lost state but then all went in vain as she refused to wake up. She was barely acknowledging his presence but her pounding heart beats which felt like a long marathon was enough proof to show that his presence did take a toll on her senses, creating havoc inside her body!
After the initial traditional ceremonies, photographs of the couple and in groups were taken.
Soon they were hushed to the dining hall for an early lunch.
The photographers didn't allow them to eat in peace. They swarmed all over just like in the mandap to picture and record every nuances between the couple. She smacked them mentally for not letting her free. She couldn't even show her dislike on her face else everything would just get recorded for life. She would have to answer a million questions from her amma and sisters of why she didnt smile. So she plastered a smile on her lips while she acted to eat the hot rice and sambar. He was having difficulty to eat the food because he wasn't used to this early lunch and that too South Indian. The photographers wanted to capture a moment with the couple feeding each other.
They had to oblige to their demands. Slowly, she took a large handful to feed him. Like a punishment, she dumped it into his mouth. He didn't show his displeasure before the camera but decided to tease her in his own way. It was his turn now. He took a small morsel and took it to her lips. As he posed to feed her, in a quick second rubbed hard against her wet lips. It appeared casual but erotic enough to cause a tremor in her, making her feel awkward and shy all of a sudden. She looked at him wide eyed while he winked and continued eating.
She knew that she had to expect such unexpected tortures from him and this was just the beginning. Her logical mind also chided her that she had asked for it else why had she dumped food into his mouth.
The muhutham for grahapravesh was towards the late afternoon. So by the time they reached Bhalla mansion, it was time for the rituals in Punjabi style. There was not much time to change her saree. Toshi ji just gave her a red bridal duppataa to cover her head and made her wear the traditional bangles.
She had Ruhi by her side all through. Her mind told her that Ruhi was that last retort to cling onto to keep her father away. She loved Ruhi sincerely like her own daughter and that was one side of the reality. The other side was that she felt that focusing on Ruhi would divert her mind off her husband which would in turn keep her mind, heart and body under control.
Ruhi refused to leave her lap and arms. Whenever Raman scanned through the hall for a glance of his bride, he saw Ruhi tagged along. It wasn't rocket science nor tough to understand Ishita's mind state. He chuckled seeing Ishita's complete focus on his daughter...no their daughter.
Dinner at Bhalla house was a grand affair and was early too, considering the usual timings.
Ishita was busy feeding Ruhi at one corner of the dining hall, after which she too had dinner with Raman. She finished it up soon and resumed her childlike play with Ruhi. She knew what lay ahead of this night and was trying her best to postpone the time she would have to go to his room which was their room too now.
Raman was a little annoyed seeing her complete ignorance of his presence and wondered if she thought he was an animal who would eat her up if she looked at him. He decided to ignore her as well and strolled up to his room. The clock struck 10.
Her amma had called Toshi ji towards the late evening to remind the timing of the shanti muhurtham.
Toshi ji giggled shly and asked Simmi to send her bhabi to Raman's room. Simmi naughtily walked to Ishita and said, "Come bhabi...Bhai must be waiting"
Ishita got up with Ruhi safely cocooned in her arms and hesitantly walked along with Simmi to the room. Simmi wasn't leaving any chance to tease her. As they reached the room, Simmi leaned forward to take RUhi from her but Ishita declined, "I will put her to sleep Simmi...from today, she can sleep with me"
Simmi grinned but was happy too that she was trying to become Ruhi's mother right from today. But she forcefully took Ruhi into her arms, "humein itna berehem samjha hai kya? Pehle hi din, woh bhi suhaag raat mein bacche ko sambaalogi, huh? Jao...bhai ko sambaalo bhabi...Ruhi ka dhyaan kal subah rakh lena"
[Did you think that we are so merciless? Will you handle the baby in your suhaag raat, huh? Go handle your husband tonight...Look after Ruhi tomorrow.]
Her naughty wink made Ishita a little miffed but she hid it. One bigger problem caught her attention. She remembered about her madisaar. Mihika, and her aunty had made her wear it. She wasn't familiar about how it is worn. They had pinned it all up so that it stayed intact on her and now to remove it all was a herculean task. Her hair was also braided with a long wig and hair pins were inserted all along. Jasmine strands were twisted all along and she wasn't even able to bring it to the front side. Owing to the time crunch, she hadn't complained or bothered about it but now she had to remove it in order to sleep.
As Simmi turned to leave, Ishita called her, "Simmi, I need a favour...can you help me change? I mean there are so many pins and..."
Simmi controlled her laughter and suppressed a giggle before whispering, "Bhai will help...aap bas andar jao..."
[You just go in...]
Seeing the frown on Ishita's face and her reluctance to step in, Simmi almost pushed her in saying, "Jaldi jao na? woh aap logon ka shanti muhurtham ka time bhi hogaya"
[Go quickly...its time for your shanti muhurtham]
She stared at her sister-in-law who seemed more torturous than her own amma in such matters. She had already got a lecture about how to lure her husband and keep him in her knotted in her saree pallu from her amma.
All people around her were conspiring against her and putting her sanity under a threat. Wasn't just her husband Raman enough to do that? She sighed and stepped in looking around the elegantly decorated room. She heard the door being shut behind by Simmi.
