Shagun's character has been inconsistent from the starting of YHM. In the starting episodes also Shagun was shown to have motherly feelings towards Ruhi but then suddenly it was bogged down and she was shown as dumb and sheer selfish and once again she is being shown to have motherly feelings and her conscience telling her right and wrong.

NO, I think that Shagun's character was done so much JUSTICE with those scenes in the episode.

Shagun, at her very core, is selfish. She is not evil as most people like to believe. She's just selfish in that she is very self-centred and wants the best for herself. She felt that she wasn't being given the best and she was in love with Ashok who could and was giving her the best lifestyle, so she went with him.

Also, she LOVES Adi and Ruhi. Adi moreso because he was her first child and is a part of her. Adi wouldn't love Shagun if she didn't show him love or affection, but she did and does! She gave him a huge party, tries to dress him the best, loves him. She may not be the best mother, but she loves him how she knows best, materially. And she loves Ruhi as well. She always tucked her in at bed time, when Ruhi was with them, and was upset when Ashok insinuated that Ruhi wasn't Raman's because she knew it would affect Ruhi. She does love both her kids, but she only loves them how she knows best, again materially. She loves Adi more than Ruhi because of the circumstances under which both was conceived. Adi was a wanted child. She cherished and nurtured him from the day he was born. Ruhi was unwanted, a last ditch attempt by Raman to save a marriage she wanted to leave. She didn't want Ruhi, wasn't that happy when she got Ruhi either. Of course she loves Ruhi, but not as much as Adi simply because they stand for different things.

Also, it doesn't matter that Ruhi is her own child. The entire premise of this show, is to show that blood relations don't always matter. Ruhi is not necessarily Ishita's own child by blood, and yet the bond between Ruhi and Ishita is stronger than the ones Ruhi shares with Raman and Shagun.

And yes, Shagun does know the difference between right and wrong. She isn't THAT stupid. The scene where she knew Ishita hadn't done anything wrong, made her become a much more dimensional character. Shagun isn't evil but selfish. Ishita didn't harm Adi and doesn't pose a danger to Shagun when it comes to her relationship with Adi, then why should Ishita suffer for that? Shagun knows this and that's why she asked. She slapped Adi partially because he was wrong and needed to know what is difference between right and wrong, and partially because Adi made HER reputation lower so she needed to fix that.

Shagun is a grey character, much like the other characters on this show. She isn't evil. That can be reserved for the likes of someone like Suraj or Ashok, and even then, I'd characterize them as assholes.
