It had been a habit, formed unknowingly to wake up at wee hours at night just to check on Ishita whether she is comfortably sleeping or not. Maybe it was guilt of making her sleep on couch or maybe something deeper which he chose to ignore.
"Ish" he stopped from shouting as he saw her sitting on the floor with her knees folded next to her chest and her sling-ed arm securely placed on her knees while her eyes darting on a unknown zone in the sky. She looked ethereal, well that was an understatement. She had a serene smile on her face which made him believe that God is somewhere there to pull out of bad times. He tapped her shoulder and she jumped on her spot
"Aap ?" She let out loud due to sudden tap
"Shh.. tum ullu ho toh iska matlab yeh ni ki sab abnormal hain."
"Ruhi tikh hai?" worry lines creased on her forehead
"Haan. Tum yahan kya kar rahi ho ?"
"Neend ni aa rahi thi iss sling ke saath." She looked down her sling "aap kya kar rahe ho yahan?"
"Woh ..woh mein paani peene ke liye utha tha aur tum wahan thi nai. Toh socha dekh lun.. pagalpanti ke daure toh padhte rehte hain tumne."
"Kuch bhi. Funny nai tha."
"Bilkul tumhari tarah." He replied with a poker face
"Aap jao mein aa jaungi."
"Tum pagal ho. Chalo utho." He forwarded his hand
"Mera mann ni hai. I want to sit here." Ishita looked again at far sky.
Raman looked at her and shook his head in amusement. Somehow the serenity on her face made him inquisitive of her thought process and next moment he sat next to Ishita on the floor
"Aap yahan kyun baith rahe ho?" Ishita asked worried. This man has the ability to do something unexpected everytime.
"Kyun ? Tumhe lag raha hai ki tiles tut jayengi ?" Ishita opened her mouth to reply but she was cut in "agar tumhare baithne se ni tutti toh mere baithne se toh bilkul ni tutengi. You see I am fit and fine, unlike you."
"Even at night you like throwing taunts ?" Ishita said looking at him
"Its talent. You wont understand." He said raising his eyebrows in self admiration
"Self obsessed." She muttered
"Kya ?"
"Kuch nai." She said with a fake smile
"Toh tum kya soch rahi ho aapne chote se dimag mein?" He finally asked, looking straight at her while she moved her knees closer to her chest and rested her head on it, tilting it bit towards Raman
"I never thought I could see everyone so content in their life." Raman frowned at her statement "as in ?"
"That cricket match.. everyone where so happy especially Amma appa..mummyji papaji." She voice mirrored the excitement in her eyes.
"Hmm.. woh toh hai. Waise tum batsman buri nai ho." Ishita chuckled "Pata hai." And Raman smiled. She was surely showing signs of being The Bhallas.
"But tumhara haath.."
"Its fine. Some hiccups are needed in life to appreciate happiness."
"Philosophy ! Not bad."
"Arre fact hai. I believe whatever happens, it happens for good."
"I dont believe in that. Your injured arm. Whats good in this ?"
"I am getting pampered." Ishita smiled widely and Raman's lips curved into a smile
"Hmm..fir ek baat puchun?" Raman asked bit skeptical of his question
"Haan"
"Subbu and tumhari engagement tootna. You think this also happened for good?" The moment he blurted out, he cursed himself. The smile which he wished to adorne her face forever was now gone.
"I shouldnt have asked about it. We already had a talk about it and I am sorry" Raman said immediately
"Its ok, you can ask that. Not much a deal. Maybe it happened for a reason. If after marriage, my infertility would have affected our relation then it would have been worst. I blindly trusted him and he broke it that easily that I learnt to put faith in very few people in my life. I loved him and there is no doubt about it but the fact that he is out of my mind is equally true. I have a beautiful present with my new family that he doesn't even cross my mind subconsciously." He could see her eyes moistened but he couldn't trace hurt in them. And for him, he felt the weight being lifted off his heart a bit more. Today she didn't mention only Ruhi but her Family of which he was a part and that was enough to know that she appreciate him in her life.
"Raman ?"
"You want to ask about Shagun ?" Ishita looked at him surprised and then nodded slightly
"Honestly, I don't want to talk about that woman. She doesn't and will never matter to me." Raman said looking straight into her eyes as if trying to give her assurance to her unsaid doubts.
"Aur kabhi tumne socha tha hum shaadi karenge?" He said distracting them both
"Kabhi bhi nai. Kitne khaadus the aap, infact aaj bhi ho." Ishita laughed as she recalled their bickerings before
"Tum bahut sweet thi jaise. Kisiko bhi lecture deti thi yaar tum. Chalo ab toh pati hoon tumhara toh deti ho, tab toh jaanta bhi nai tha fir bhi de diya lecture." Raman mocked and ishita pretended to fake annoyance
"Kuch nai badla na?" Ishita said turning towards him
"Haan.. tum abhi bhi irritating ho."
"Kuch bhi.." Ishita said
"dekho yeh bhi nai badla" Raman pointed at his 'kuch bhi' reply. Both shared a laugh and diverted their attention towards twinkling stars above.
They both sat with unsaid words and comfortable silence. Raman had never felt sky to be that beautiful ever and he knew it only because of Ishita that he could pick few moments of happiness even while sitting silently.
"Raman."
"Hmm.."
"I think we should sleep. Its pretty late. And you have to go to office also."
"I am good at time managememt. Its you who is going to run after getting up late." He mocked and she smiled " you just cant stay sweet."
"You only like Ravan Kumar. Remember." He said tilting his head towards her and she lowered her gaze with blush creeping up her cheeks.
"Chalein.."
Raman got up and helped her get up .
Ishita moved towards her other side of bed "Ishita?"
"Haan" she looked at him
"Nothing changed but something seriously changed." Raman retired to bed while she stayed rooted in her place "Goodnight Ishita."
"Goodnight." She said after blinking a few times.
Sleep engulfed them soon but not before they wished for a lifelong of such unsaid moments.
