Flowing Melodies: The house of angels - Part (A)

Step...step...step. 10 steps up and 10 steps down. Raman was walking up and down religiously. Shoulder hunched, body held tight, face screwed in concentration. He hated hospitals. Fear was tickling down his spine, he needs to keep his mind channeled towards Ishita, if not, he'll shatter into million pieces. The past hour, from the time Ishita collapsed till now, Raman felt he had aged 10 years. Every member of the family was at the hospital operating room corridor. No one dared to approach Raman, his eyes were dry with unshed tear, his hair in disarray, and his whole appearance was a far cry from his normal debonair self. The ambulance had brought Ishita to the City Hospital emergency room the doctors had transferred her to the operating theater.

Dr. Kavery walked out...Mr.Bhalla...Everyone rushed to her. "We need your signature. Your wife has internal bleeding in her abdomen and fallopian tubes, we need to saturate it and drill a hole at both the fallopian tubes to allow blood flow. She must have received a blow to her stomach some time ago. This, on top of some kind of pressure has caused internal bleeding. Every hour delayed, can place the patient in dire situation". Raman's hand shivered holding the consent form. He wanted to hold on to the form, as it represented Ishita, he couldn't sign the document. "Putar, you have to let go, sign the consent, have faith in Mata Rani", he heard his mother's murmur.

After signing the consent form, he turns around and looked at this family. "What blow is the doctor talking about? Did Ishita get hurt?" No one knew. "I know papa." Ruhi's sweet voice could be heard. Eyes streaming with tears she narrated the incident. "Adi bhaiya was standing on the road arguing with Shagun mamma yesterday afternoon, when an auto nearly rammed into them; Ishima pushed Adi bhaiya away and the auto hit Ishima in her stomach. She fell down but got up immediately. I was worried but she shooed off my worries stating she wasn't hurt. The handle of the auto hit Ishima's stomach." Raman starred at his daughter, not comprehending the gist of Ruhi's narration. Ruhi's voice was clogged with tears and she had sobbed non-stop thru out her re-count. With eyes blurred with tears, Raman looked at his family; he felt a tight grip on his waist, Adi was hugging Raman tightly and crying. "Adi? Tum?" "Papa, I'm so sorry. Because of me Ishita aunty is injured. She saved me, it should have been me instead of her," Adi wept. "I heard the conversation between mamma and Ashok papa. He was informed about Ishita aunty by uncle Param. I came here with the driver." "I'm so sorry papa," Adi's sobbing and explanation touched everyone's heart. Raman hugged Adi but he could not utter a single word to console the boy. His wife's life was in critical condition. They had just stepped into the first step of the marriage and now, this devastation... Into this, Madhavi Iyer walked quietly to Adi, got hold of him..."Don't cry beta. It's not your fault. Ishita is like a mother to you. No mother would allow her child to get hurt. Don't worry, Lord Murugan will take care of Ishita. You just pray for her," saying this tenderly to the crying young boy, Madhavi patted and hugged him. Adi nodded and walked towards the Ganesh pappa altar to pray. Raman felt an out of body experience...his whole family together at last but the pillar was Ishita and she was lying there fighting for her life... How can this happen? Every time he sees light at the end of the tunnel, another unwanted train comes to crush his happiness.

Raman continued pacing and his mind started to wind back and remember each and every event in the past 8 months. Meeting Ishita, their agreement for marriage sirf Ruhi ki leya, the engagement, Tamilian wedding, the nok jhoks, their minds joining, hearts blending and yesterday the cultivation of everything. The passion they'd unleashed was primitive and unstoppable. Ishita had tugged him to her, cradling him with all tenderness in her, making him forget all he had endured since Shagun's duplicity. Intimacy wasn't just about skin-to-skin contact, but precious shared peace. Ishita and he had found it but now it's hanging in jeopardy.

5 hours had passed, when finally Dr. Kavery walked out, looking exhausted but exuberant. Every anxious eyes turned towards her, but no one approached her, worried the news she was about to impart would shatter their world. "Doctor?" Raman apprehensively queried. "The operation was a success. We managed to stop the bleeding and drilling was a clear execution." Everyone's face broke into a heartfelt relieved smile; Adi's face too had a wide smile. "The good news in this whole sorry situation is that, there is 50 50 chance of Ishita being able to conceive. The hole we have drilled in the fallopian tubes will allow the eggs to flow easily and she might be able to become a mother," Dr. Kavery smiled while imparting the earth shattering news...
