I think Raman ran into Mihir at a point in Mihir's life where he and his sis (Shagun) probably had just lost their parents ..Probably Mihir and Shagun were from a poor family and were struggling to make ends meet ..
Mihir keeps saying that he had a horrible past ..Maybe he was doing something wrong to earn money to support him and shagun or something like that and Raman brought him back on track - educated him and gave him a job ...
In the process he got to know Shagun (Mihir's sister) ...Shagun being a gold digger would have trapped Raman in her pretense of love and kind of forced him to believe that he loves her too and they would've gotten married .. (I think given IshRa's chemistry now ..CVs will disclose that Raman never really was the first to fall for Shagun - that she made him love her by trapping him in her seductive behavior that he mistook for genuine love..Raman being shy and not particularly interested in girls would have agreed) ..
Years after marriage Shagun met even richer Ashok and decided to ditch Raman for him ..
