I wonder if its too soon to say that he won't be able to live without her.Habituated,yes.Irrevocably dependent?Not right now.
About the pain, I can understand.it hurts on a lot of levels when you are the reason for someone's pain.Being the type of man that he is,he would feel guilty at causing her pain.But this seems like the start of the ehsaas mingled with guilt.
As you wrote:

He is not in love with her.
He thinks he cannot be.
^ These are true but my interpretation differs from what you imply.This may stem from my belief that it takes quite a long time to fall in love.Raman,for one, seems like a person who wont give in easily to this feeling.He will secure himself from every aspect possible before handing over his heart to Ishita.
Her absence might haunt him for the very reason that he could've prevented her heartbreak.His guilt for ignoring his gut feeling.His guilt and confusion though,was very well portrayed.
Your RKB is less of a dunderhead perhaps than the RKB of my understanding.Don't take my observations to heart.They are just that-observations/opinions.
This was longer than a bit😳.Sorry if I bored you to sleep!

@bold - this so sent me into the HP verse especially book 6 my absolute fav of the series! 😛

@red - oh nothing silly in that Vidya trust me, yep RKB has detached himself from emotions in general, the only people who are able to get through that fortress are his children at present and slowly and steadily Ishita 😳 I think its his coping mechanism but how long can you hold in the water? Once there is overflow even a dam bursts 😳

@blue - this is so amazing of you and true... yep he felt Shagun was the one who brought him luck... well she did alright of the bad kind but the one person who has been truly lucky to him, whose presence actually makes a difference in his world for the better is Ruhi his lil gal... and I believe somewhere he has begun to realize that, the day he falls for Ishita I think he may absolutely credit his daughter for making his world a happy place again, had she not connected with Ishita, they wouldn't have ended up together

@pink - yep beneath that mask of indifference lies a man who has a very fragile heart with a great capacity to love, and while he hasnt fallen for her yet... Ishita has managed to make a place for herself in his world, he is not wholly indifferent to her anymore... he notices things about her and to know she is in pain and he stood there silently will take its toll on him

@green - oh he isn't in love with her yet, in my SS as well. But for Raman to feel the pain for someone who isn't family, who he isn't blood related - someone on the outside, a person other than Shagun that's rattling and the thing is... he is sorta used to her in his life now... he has this constant in her that has been missing for ages.. someone to come home too even if it is to have petty fights with 😆 he finally was rid of a void that had enveloped him for years altogether and to be back there again... its not an easy task
