Chapter 7

Shlok Karmarkar was an astute businessman. His innovative decisions and risk taking won both criticisms and laurels across the world. He brought about unique changes which led to immense success. But that success also brought about a lot of changes in the man himself. He turned towards a lavish lifestyle for which he became more popular. Parties and holidays always found regular spaces in his calendar. Media loved him for all the right and the wrong reasons. On one hand, he topped the business page for his mergers and acquisitions but on the other hand he was always part of the sensational news and whispers of the gossip world- alleged affairs, drunk and drive, brawl with the police- the list was endless. However, this attitude was just the grown tree. The root of this tree- his core values- were always commendable. Apart from craving to become a successful businessman, he always wanted to be of some good use to someone. The result was the various schools he built in the rural areas across the state. He was also part of a publication unit which issued free books to students who couldn't afford it.

His journey to stardom wasn't an easy one. His name easily made to the list of rags to riches story. He had his share of well-wishers who helped him climb up the ladder of success, helped him to overcome the well laid obstacles. He was always grateful to them and made them stakeholders of his company, to always have them as part of his business family. He started Karmarkar Automobiles in 1974. Within 15 years he expanded his company and made a mark throughout the nation for producing affordable bikes and cars. Being India's own company, people placed huge trust on his products. He married Jhanvi Dutt of Dutt Industries in 1990. It was an arranged cum business marriage. Dutt Industries was sinking and Shlok decided to acquire it, help it float. Jhanvi was more or less a gift to Shlok from the Dutts. Shlok and Jhanvi had a good time in their early years of marriage. Afterwards, the spark fizzled out and both drifted apart into their own professional world and their relationship stood strictly a legal one.

With Gagan joining the company in the 1990s, Karmarkar Industries plunged internationally. In the next 10 years, they tied up with several leading automobile companies worldwide. Gagan was the spearhead of the operations. Shlok slowly and gradually became dependent on Gagan. His irrational actions were always well handled by Gagan. Gagan soon became his right hand. He couldn't do anything without him. With passing years, his decision making turned shaky and he needed Gagan by his side to stop him from taking foolish decisions. Every decision he made was critical and he needed someone to monitor his actions. He wondered how Gagan put him with him, with his temper and meaningless theories. Now, with his deteriorating health, his mind was at peace that there was someone who would stop his empire from sinking. Gagan Aryan. He was the best suitor to be his successor.

Taking a sip of the hot soup, Shlok felt the watery liquid burn his throat, instantly blurring his eyes with tears. The nurse feeding him wiped the colourless soup water, which escaped from his mouth, from his lower jaw and without another word continued feeding him. Shlok looked vacantly at the foot of the cot.

A knock surfaced the silence and the door to the deluxe ward opened. Vedant entered with his trusted psychologist. The doctor tailed behind them.

Mr Karmarkar!' called the doctor with equal command and compassion. He began checking the pulse and heart rate, while the nurse ceased the feeding.

Vedant observed how still Shlok was. Eyes fixed, face pale and blank, hands loosely clutched together- this maverick industrialist was a thin and a weak old man.

He is in a state of shock,' informed the doctor, clearly satisfied after his routine check up. His brother's death has affected him very deeply and he hasn't spoken much after that. So please tread very carefully. Don't upset him.'

The officers were left alone in the room. Vedant pulled a chair closer to the cot while Ruby perched by the wall in front the cot, looking directly at Shlok.

It was strange how Vedant couldn't feel any nervousness or even a sense of awe seeing Shlok in person. Any officer who met celebrities would feel a sense of high responsibility and pride in moments like these. Shlok was someone in the league of Ratan Tata and the Ambanis. Power and stature stuck to people like them. A wave of the hand, they could end the career of anyone. But Vedant could see no one but a frail looking man who could well be the prime suspect of his investigation.

Hello Mr Shlok. My name is Vedant Vashisht and I am investigating all the unexpected happenings around you and your family. I am very sorry for your loss of your brother. I have few questions for you. Are you up to it?'

The door opened a second time, without the knock. Vedant turned to face Gagan and another man, by the look of it a lawyer.

Shlok's lawyer will be present all the time when you are questioning him, Sir,' said Gagan entering the room. He didn't deem it necessary to exchange any sort of pleasantries with the senior officer. He wanted to make sure Shlok was given all the assistance needed through this enquiry.

Vedant asked in surprise, What do you need a lawyer for? Your boss isn't charged with anything. He isn't even a suspect in our eyes now. There is no need for a lawyer to be present.'

May I know what this questioning is about?' asked the lawyer.

It's not questioning. It's just a simple enquiry. Police question the family when one of their own dies. Shlok's brother is dead and I want to ask a few questions about his brother, and also his driver,' replied Vedant biting every word.

Only the guilty calls for a lawyer,' said Ruby and instantly gauged Gagan's reaction. A mix of shock and nervousness.

In that case- the lawyer can be present here as a family friend,' said Gagan with a concealed smirk. He wasn't going to give up.

If he is a lawyer, I want him out of this room immediately. If he is a family friend- just like you, I want both of you out of this room immediately. You can choose for yourself, Mr Gagan,' said Vedant sternly. He hates when someone dictates the police.

Gagan stood stunned. He didn't expect a blunt rejection of this kind. He nodded at the lawyer and he left the room. He wasn't ready to leave Shlok on his own with these officers. He had to keep tab on what was being said by Shlok to the officers.

Vedant skipped the formalities. He understood that he had to be police' with them, else they would plan to steer him their way.

It's very important that you answer my questions, Mr Shlok. If you choose not to answer, I have to arrest you for not cooperating with the police.'

You can't do that!!' interrupted Gagan.

You want to challenge me? Go on!' said Vedant. Ruby was seeing a different Vedant. She had never seen him so rigid. She smirked at the look on Gagan's face- helpless.

Why were you here on the night of Rafi's death?'

He got a call...' answered Gagan.

Another word- and I want you out of here, Mr Gagan,' said Vedant shooting an intense glare. He wasn't an ordinary struggling junior police officer. He also wasn't someone who budged for power or political influence. He was Vedant Vashisht.

Mr Shlok? You heard the question,' said Ruby, making the men realise her presence.

Shlok closed after God knows when. Drops of tears dripped through the closed eyes, wetting the eyelashes. A low voice emerged. I wanted to kill Rafi for taking my friend away from me. I had asked the hospital staff to keep me informed about Rafi's progress. I got a call that he was awake and hence I came in here.'

To kill Rafi?' asked Vedant.

Shlok was silent.

Why did you come here? What did you plan to do when you meet Rafi?'

I don't know!' said Shlok, with little strength. I wanted to kill the man, but when I went inside the room, I don't know what went through me.'

Meaning?'

I don't know...,' repeated Shlok.

Ruby looked very interested with Shlok's answers. As much as he told them that he didn't remember anything, she could see something was running in his mind, something which he was deliberately forcing himself not to utter. Shlok was running a script in his mind. He was saying the words in his mind first, before he said it to them.

Vedant let a silent sigh. This wasn't going anywhere. Ok...assuming you cooled down and didn't harm Rafi...what did you both talk about?'

I don't remember...' said Shlok looking at Gagan.

Sir- he isn't in the right frame of mind,' said Gagan as politely as possible. His memory hasn't been great for the past few months.'

Vedant was running out of patience. He hated when someone interrupted his questioning.

Mr Shlok, do you remember going to a launch party?'

Shlok furrowed his brows in concentration. He closed his eyes trying to remember what he was being asked. Yes. I remember. It was a book launch of my friend, Harish Gupta.'

Correct,' agreed Vedant with a little relief that there wasn't any amnesia involved. What happened there? When did you leave the venue?'

I was feeling a little dizzy,' replied Shlok, rubbing his forehead involuntarily. I didn't want to leave but with people around and especially...'

Shlok took a deep breath. He seemed to struggle to talk continuously. Gagan wanted to stop the questioning citing Shlok's poor health but decided otherwise. It would arouse doubt in Vedant's mind if he kept trying to interrupt the questioning.

the media,' continued Shlok. I didn't want my health to make the headlines. It would affect the share prices a lot.'

Right. So you decided to leave? What time was it?'

I don't remember what time it was. I called Rajeev...' Shlok halted as soon as he uttered his dear friend's name. I told him I wasn't feeling well. We then left.'

Why did you get down on the middle of the road during your travel back?'

Shlok glanced at Gagan again and then back at the two officers. He pressed his eyes with his palms, long and hard. I don't remember.'

Vedant more or less expected that answer.

What do you remember?'

After I got into the car, I don't remember anything. I don't remember getting out of the car. Did I get out of the car? I mean- that's what everyone keeps saying.'

What's the next thing you remember?'

I was in my room,' said Shlok looking helplessly at Gagan again.

Vedant looked at Gagan for a better explanation.

That night, midnight, I got a call informing about the accident and that it was a major one. I believed that both Rajeev and Shlok were dead on the spot. But I was told that there was only one body, that of the driver and there was no sign of Shlok. I called up the event manager at the launch party who said Shlok definitely left with the driver. I understood that Shlok must have got down to visit some place or meet someone. I asked Sam to track Shlok's phone and finally I found him sleeping under a tree on the highway. He had no clue where he was and why he got down.'

You mean disoriented or memory loss?' asked Ruby.

Disoriented I think,' shrugged Gagan. The doctor said it was just aging and nothing serious.'

Mr Shlok,' Vedant went back to questioning the old man. When did you last see your brother?'

I think the night I went to the hospital to meet Rafi.'

Did you talk to him?'

He was drunk. I asked Kilji to take him to the room.'

This was before you got the call from the hospital or after?'

Before. After the call, I didn't meet anyone. I left for the hospital right away.'

Did you and your brother have any sort of argument or fight in the past few days or weeks?'

Every meeting is an argument, Sir. I don't remember anything specific.'

Vedant paused giving a moment for everyone to clear their thoughts. He continued.

We have established that the death of your driver wasn't an accident. It was a deliberate attempt to kill...'

I knew it!!' said Gagan forcefully. I knew it was an attempt to kill Shlok.'

Vedant ignored the exclamation. Rafi was also killed in your presence, Mr Shlok. Who do you think is behind all this? It looks like someone is behind your life.'

After a brief silence, Shlok replied, I don't know. I haven't got the faintest clue as who would want to harm me, destroy me. All I want is justice for my friend. Even Rafi...'

Shlok eyes widened. Something dawned in his mind.

What's it?' asked Vedant with interest.

Rafi- I think I remember him apologising to me. He said he was sorry.'

For killing your friend?'

I don't know. May be yes.'

Gagan cleared his throat signalling he wanted to offer his input. What if Rafi didn't really intend to kill Rajeev. What if it was really an accident and Rafi was apologising to Shlok for that.'

If it was an accident, how on earth does Rafi know Shlok? How did he know Shlok and Rajeev were close?' asked Vedant strongly. The question was enough to silence Gagan. He waited for Gagan to reply.

You are right,' agreed Gagan politely. Rafi must have known Shlok, the accident should have been planned...'

That brings me back to the question- why was Rafi killed? Do you know anyone by the name of Jana Yadav?'

Jana Yadav? No...Gagan?' asked Shlok.

Have never heard the name before. I can check our employee list to see if he works for us,' replied Gagan. Is he the shooter?'

Yes,' replied Vedant. And I think he was hired by Mr Shlok to kill Rafi.'

A moment passed with everyone looking at everyone. Ruby was enjoying every moment of it.

That's absurd,' spoke Gagan in disbelief.

You think I am behind Rafi's murder? I ordered the killing?' asked Shlok with a small laugh. The laugh hid the slight shiver in the voice. Was it nervousness or sheer anger at the accusation?

Yes. You had the motive,' replied Vedant.

What about Rajeev? You think I would kill my own best friend?' asked Shlok, his voice turned stronger.

Who said both the murders were ordered by a single person?' reasoned Vedant. Rajeev's case is a separate one. Rafi killed your friend and hence you hired Jana Yadav to kill Rafi. You played the victim so that you wouldn't be suspected.'

You said it yourself that someone wanted to frame Shlok by killing Rafi in his presence and now you are saying that that's exactly what happened? Please don't force your imaginative theories to be real ones, Sir. Also- what evidence do you have to prove Shlok is behind Rafi's murder?' asked Gagan.

Vedant smiled. For one- Mr Shlok's gun was used to kill Rafi.'

My gun?'

Yes. The gun Jana Yadav used to shoot Rafi- it's your gun. We have checked the registration. Care to explain how the killer was in possession of your gun?'

Vedant looked at the two shocked man with triumph. He loved taking people by surprise.

Gagan broke the silence, Can I call the lawyer now?'

Chapter 8

Why didn't you question further on the gun?' asked Ruby.

Vedant and Ruby were driving back to their station. Vedant, to everyone's surprise, ceased the questioning after mentioning about the gun. He didn't wait for Gagan or Shlok to explain the story behind it. He took leave before the lawyer could even come in.

We could have put them into a fix by posing further questions,' continued Ruby.

We need to have the right questions in hand to get the answers we need. For now- we have no evidence apart from the gun being registered under Shlok's name. We can't even be sure if the gun was indeed bought by Shlok.'

We can ask them to prove that the gun isn't theirs,' reasoned Ruby.

Doesn't work that way, Ruby. The suspect needn't prove his innocence. We need to prove he is guilty. We don't even know if Shlok is a suspect. Apart from this gun, he stands more as a victim in this case. We need more on him before we can give him the impression that he is becoming a strong suspect. Now- he just supposes that we consider him a suspect.'

And is he? A suspect?'

He is definitely a person of interest. All the events are happening around him and hence he definitely has a bearing on all our cases. Looking more into him and his movements might give us some useful information.'

Vedant banged on the horn for the cyclist in front of him to move to one side of the road. The road was crammed with vehicles- bikes, autos, cars, buses, vans, cyclists- the exhaust creating a fog of smoke. It was 10 min they were stranded in the same place. Vedant downed the window and craned his neck as much as he could.

At least a km!' exclaimed Vedant impatiently. He switched off the ignition. He glanced at Ruby who grew silent suddenly. What's the matter? Something on your mind?'

Nothing,' replied Ruby with a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

So it's not the case,' said Vedant. Ruby never shied from expressing her views on the working cases. She stopped from saying anything only if it concerned something else. Personal?'

Ruby nodded. Vedant was curious and a little anxious. He realised the problem was more serious than usual. Ruby always never lost herself in thoughts. She was an expert in keeping her personal problems away from work. Being a psychologist, it would look a joke if she wasn't able to handle her problems. Vedant wasn't sure if he should pry. He stayed silent trying to decide how to approach her especially when he felt he was the last person one should go for help.

Want to talk about it?' he asked safely. He didn't want to offend her. Ruby was one of the strongest women he had seen in his career. Clear in mind, strong in stature, brilliant in her work- she was a rare find.

Nothing serious, Sir,' she said, her confident smile back.

Vedant could see her talking to herself silently- her inner self conversing to her. She was fighting her thoughts allowing only the strong and positive ones to win. She was prioritising the options evolving in her mind. Vedant was surprised how he was able to understand so much about human nature. It had to be because of Ruby and her psychoanalytical theories.

You do know you can tell me anything. If anything is troubling you, I am all ears. Anyway- it seems we are stuck here for a long time.'

The usual girls' problem, Sir,' said Ruby casually.

Vedant shifted uneasily.

No! No! I mean- the usual...My parents have started forcing me to marry. They have even seen the boy. They just want me to visit home and finalise everything.'

Vedant's heartbeat, which drummed a lot faster before, slowly returned to its normal pace. What's the problem? You don't like the boy?'

It's not that,' replied Ruby.

Hmm...you already...like someone?' asked Vedant with hesitation.

Nope,' replied Ruby, with a small laugh, sending Vedant to more confusion.

Then?'

I don't want to get married,' said Ruby.

Oh!' The tone wasn't that of surprise. Your parents aren't happy with that decision I assume?'

Yep. I am having a hard time convincing them. Also- our community doesn't need the assent of the girl for her marriage.'

That's outrageous.'

Yes it is. I don't hate marriage. I am just not ready for it. I have huge plans for my career and I have just about stepped into a new line of work. I am sure my job wouldn't be supported after marriage.'

Why not?'

That's how it is, Sir. How much ever there are talks about gender equality growing in our country, bias exists. I am a psychologist and I work for the police.'

So?'

So- after marriage- I would be asked to give up all this and stay at home and run the kitchen.'

That's...pathetic. I am sure your parents will understand your point. Just try explaining to them. If you want to take off...'

No No! I have explained it to them. I have convinced them to stall the idea for at least a month. Must have said a year. Anyway- the boy's side is ready to wait it seems. Seems a very desperate family.'

Any family will wait for a girl like you,' said Vedant lightly.

Haha,' laughed Ruby. I was just thinking, how the image of girls or say women haven't changed a bit all these years. They are growing more independent but still- they are the ones expected to leave everything behind after marriage, just for the sake of the boy.'

Vedant remained silent.

Which also makes me think,' continued Ruby. What role has Jhanvi Karmarkar in all this? She is nowhere to be seen in the picture. She wasn't at home or at the hospital with her husband. The sons are nowhere to be seen too. I think it's important to look closer into the family, Sir. Understand the relationships and where they stand.'

And Gagan? What's your opinion on him?'

He clearly irritated you,' said Ruby jokingly. You deliberately snubbed him, didn't you?'

Oh yes. He is a very interesting man. Very close to Shlok. Shlok seems to be depending on the man for almost everything.'

With the vehicles moving forward by inches, Vedant switched on the ignition, pushed the rod to first gear from neutral, and released the clutch slowly, just centimetres away from hitting the van in front of him.

Something is definitely bothering Gagan,' said Ruby. He is nervous about something. He is unsure- uncertain- every word Shlok utters is a surprise to him. He seems to be gathering information as much as we were. He wanted to be present when we questioned Shlok. We know he is a brilliant strategist. With every detail he consumes, he is going to be ready with a strong defence.'

You mean- he is going to pose problems for us in the future?'

Most certainly,' replied Ruby. A strategist always forecasts the problems. Before we question him, he will be ready with the answers. It's going to be a hard game against him.'

We need to be 100% sure whenever we approach them. They can easily use their power to turn the media towards them and against us. They can play the victim,' said Vedant.

The media is still speculating. We haven't made any arrest and that's going to raise a lot of questions. Our work would be questioned I guess.'

Just not by the media- I will be questioned by the Commissioner as well. We have to quickly make some breakthrough to show everyone that we are putting our best efforts. First thing we can do is release a picture of Jana Yadav. Identifying him is very important. And Ruby...I want you to work on Shlok and Gurubhai and their relationship equation.'

On it!'

---------

What a surprise! What a surprise! The disciple is here,' commented Shakti as Sagar walked into her lab.

I can see more annoyance than surprise on your face,' said Sagar casually, jumping one of the high chairs by the table.

You're proving yourself to be a good detective,' replied Shakti. She never liked Sagar much because of his untimely comments. She found them insensitive. She found him crossing the limits way too many times to her like. Why are you here and not your boss?'

Boss is busy and hence the assistant boss is here,' said Sagar, imitating a deep commander voice. Dont worry! I can pose as many questions as my boss.'

Can you be as quiet as your boss?' asked Shakti.

Sagar smirked. He scratched his head and ruffled his hair, looking around the lab with childish interest. Shakti closed her eyes regaining composure. She opened a file to read out her observations. She eyed Sagar with distrust. She wasn't sure if he would relay all the details to Vedant.

Don't worry. I am not careless as I look,' said Sagar reading Shakti's mind.

Gurubhai's post-mortem is done. He died of Subdural Haematoma,' said Shakti. The fall caused his death.'

Sagar sat with a serious look. A suicide after all?'

I said fall. It could be suicide or someone could have just pushed him. The stomach contents indicate he hadn't eaten any normal food in his last day. I doubted he might have been suffocated- but after observation and a few tests, it seems Gurubhai must have just slept face down on some pillow. There is no indication that he suffocated. The wind pipes and lungs are normal.'

Never liked The Human Body chapter right from school,' commented Sagar.

For once, Shakti wished Vedant had come. Here is something that might interest you. Gurubhai's BAC- Blood Alcohol Content- is very high. 0.32.'

Oh!' exclaimed Sagar. That could have well killed him too...just that it didn't.'

It's not very high to kill him. He just would not have been in his senses. He could have jumped without his knowledge...'

Or someone could have asked him and he could have blindly followed it too...'

Possible. I pulled his medical records from his family doctor.'

Aren't patient files confidential?'

For the police. I am a doctor.'

Oh yeah,' said Sagar as if it dawned on him just then.

Anyway- according to our victim's last medical report- his BAC was 0.18.'

And this report was when?'

6 months before. According to the doctor, Gurubhai always had a steady BAC ranging from 0.15 to 0.20.'

The doctor never did anything to put a stop to this drinking problem?'

He tried. But Gurubhai gave no qualms. The point is- Gurubhai's BAC at the time of his death is unusually too high. He must have drank more than what he usually did. Why?'

Sagar considered the question and made a mental note. Was he on any other medication?'

Regular painkillers. Nothing out of the ordinary.'

Forensics from Gurubhai's room?'

They are cataloguing. Will get in touch if something pops up.'

Even if it's a toast?'

Get out, Sagar,' said Shakti calmly getting back to her work.

What about the other bodies? Nothing on them? You don't seem too helpful, doctor.' Sagar continued irritating nature.

Rajeev died of accident injuries. Rafi was shot cold blood. The other guy,' Shakti looked at her notes for confirmation, Jana Yadav, he died falling from the third floor. You don't seem to be giving me challenging bodies, Mr Sagar.'

Sagar raised his hands in surrender. Send in the reports, Doc. I'll inform the boss.'

I will, I will. Now go. I have lot of other things to do.'

Sagar turned to leave.

Oh yes. Just a minute. There is one more thing,' said Shakti, stopping Sagar at the door. It might be nothing. Gurubhai has a strong fire scar on the back of his right shoulder. It seems pretty old. The family doctor said he has no clue about it.'

Sagar nodded with a smile and left the lab.

------------

Gagan slumped on his office chair, rolling back a little. With closed eyes, he stretched his neck upwards and then down, and quickly to his left and right, evoking sounds of little cracks. He removed his specs and rubbed his eyes. He looked at the huge pile of files towered on his table with weariness. A separate set of files sat in the middle of the table with sticky notes pasted on top with instructions. He tapped on the laptop but it refused to switch on. He forgot to connect the charger and now the battery had drained out. He quickly plugged in the charger, and within seconds, the laptop displayed the welcome screen.

He checked the email immediately and let out a sigh of frustration. He was trying to contact someone for the past two days and there had been absolutely no reply from the other side. He wasn't sure if the no response was genuine or if there was more to the silence. The work he had assigned was still pending. He wanted to know the status. He dialled the number again. No response. He felt it was time to take matter into his own hands.

He unlocked the table drawers and opened the lowest one. He pulled out a file. It was a write up. The title read, Star Industrialist plays victim!' A sudden rush of emotion overtook Gagan as he closed his eyes to compose himself. He closed the file to read the name on the cover. Netra'. This entire article, if and when published was going to take the country by storm. There were going to be huge controversies rising up keeping the gossipers and the unemployed busy. Consequently, it would also directly lead to increasing sales in tea shops.

He tried the number again but no response. He couldn't let anything go wrong. He had to right the wrong before it even happened.

Netra!

Gagan picked up his phone again and called, and this time there was an answer.

Netra? Gagan here...I think we should meet.'

---------

Everyone, settle down,' said Vedant in the squad room. His team took their seats. They were going to have the briefing- discuss their findings, theorise and decide on the next plan of action.

The shrill of the phone interrupted the beginning of the discussion. Heera received the information and looked at her boss.

A young girl has been found murdered,' she said seriously.

Silence descended.

Why are we getting the case?' asked Sagar, confused. We are already dealing with multiple cases.'

Heera replied, The body was found at Karmarkar Autofactory!'

Awesome updates dear
loved both of them
The questioning of Shlok was beautifully penned, loved every bit of it. Thoroughly enjoyed that session.
Ved is just too good! I love the way he handles everything.
Gagan is an expert strategist, he is the most intriguing character so far! Shlok too! He doesn't seem the way he is.

Ved-Ruby's convo was interesting. Ruby doesn't want to marry, but her family is keen on doing so. It would be interesting to see how she tackles it.
THe family relations, waiting for their equations.
Shakti-Sagar, oh god this boy gets o everyone's nerves deliberately! THe info that Shakti gave is intriguing, let's see what comes up
Gagan, now what is he up to?
another body, a young girl, Netra? or someone else?
Damn Captivating!!
do continue soon
thanks for pms
