Chapter 8
Why didn't you question further on the gun?' asked Ruby.
Vedant and Ruby were driving back to their station. Vedant, to everyone's surprise, ceased the questioning after mentioning about the gun. He didn't wait for Gagan or Shlok to explain the story behind it. He took leave before the lawyer could even come in.
We could have put them into a fix by posing further questions,' continued Ruby.
We need to have the right questions in hand to get the answers we need. For now- we have no evidence apart from the gun being registered under Shlok's name. We can't even be sure if the gun was indeed bought by Shlok.'
We can ask them to prove that the gun isn't theirs,' reasoned Ruby.
Doesn't work that way, Ruby. The suspect needn't prove his innocence. We need to prove he is guilty. We don't even know if Shlok is a suspect. Apart from this gun, he stands more as a victim in this case. We need more on him before we can give him the impression that he is becoming a strong suspect. Now- he just supposes that we consider him a suspect.'
And is he? A suspect?'
He is definitely a person of interest. All the events are happening around him and hence he definitely has a bearing on all our cases. Looking more into him and his movements might give us some useful information.'
Vedant banged on the horn for the cyclist in front of him to move to one side of the road. The road was crammed with vehicles- bikes, autos, cars, buses, vans, cyclists- the exhaust creating a fog of smoke. It was 10 min they were stranded in the same place. Vedant downed the window and craned his neck as much as he could.
At least a km!' exclaimed Vedant impatiently. He switched off the ignition. He glanced at Ruby who grew silent suddenly. What's the matter? Something on your mind?'
Nothing,' replied Ruby with a smile that didn't reach her eyes.
So it's not the case,' said Vedant. Ruby never shied from expressing her views on the working cases. She stopped from saying anything only if it concerned something else. Personal?'
Ruby nodded. Vedant was curious and a little anxious. He realised the problem was more serious than usual. Ruby always never lost herself in thoughts. She was an expert in keeping her personal problems away from work. Being a psychologist, it would look a joke if she wasn't able to handle her problems. Vedant wasn't sure if he should pry. He stayed silent trying to decide how to approach her especially when he felt he was the last person one should go for help.
Want to talk about it?' he asked safely. He didn't want to offend her. Ruby was one of the strongest women he had seen in his career. Clear in mind, strong in stature, brilliant in her work- she was a rare find.
Nothing serious, Sir,' she said, her confident smile back.
Vedant could see her talking to herself silently- her inner self conversing to her. She was fighting her thoughts allowing only the strong and positive ones to win. She was prioritising the options evolving in her mind. Vedant was surprised how he was able to understand so much about human nature. It had to be because of Ruby and her psychoanalytical theories.
You do know you can tell me anything. If anything is troubling you, I am all ears. Anyway- it seems we are stuck here for a long time.'
The usual girls' problem, Sir,' said Ruby casually.
Vedant shifted uneasily.
No! No! I mean- the usual...My parents have started forcing me to marry. They have even seen the boy. They just want me to visit home and finalise everything.'
Vedant's heartbeat, which drummed a lot faster before, slowly returned to its normal pace. What's the problem? You don't like the boy?'
It's not that,' replied Ruby.
Hmm...you already...like someone?' asked Vedant with hesitation.
Nope,' replied Ruby, with a small laugh, sending Vedant to more confusion.
Then?'
I don't want to get married,' said Ruby.
Oh!' The tone wasn't that of surprise. Your parents aren't happy with that decision I assume?'
Yep. I am having a hard time convincing them. Also- our community doesn't need the assent of the girl for her marriage.'
That's outrageous.'
Yes it is. I don't hate marriage. I am just not ready for it. I have huge plans for my career and I have just about stepped into a new line of work. I am sure my job wouldn't be supported after marriage.'
Why not?'
That's how it is, Sir. How much ever there are talks about gender equality growing in our country, bias exists. I am a psychologist and I work for the police.'
So?'
So- after marriage- I would be asked to give up all this and stay at home and run the kitchen.'
That's...pathetic. I am sure your parents will understand your point. Just try explaining to them. If you want to take off...'
No No! I have explained it to them. I have convinced them to stall the idea for at least a month. Must have said a year. Anyway- the boy's side is ready to wait it seems. Seems a very desperate family.'
Any family will wait for a girl like you,' said Vedant lightly.
Haha,' laughed Ruby. I was just thinking, how the image of girls or say women haven't changed a bit all these years. They are growing more independent but still- they are the ones expected to leave everything behind after marriage, just for the sake of the boy.'
Vedant remained silent.
Which also makes me think,' continued Ruby. What role has Jhanvi Karmarkar in all this? She is nowhere to be seen in the picture. She wasn't at home or at the hospital with her husband. The sons are nowhere to be seen too. I think it's important to look closer into the family, Sir. Understand the relationships and where they stand.'
And Gagan? What's your opinion on him?'
He clearly irritated you,' said Ruby jokingly. You deliberately snubbed him, didn't you?'
Oh yes. He is a very interesting man. Very close to Shlok. Shlok seems to be depending on the man for almost everything.'
With the vehicles moving forward by inches, Vedant switched on the ignition, pushed the rod to first gear from neutral, and released the clutch slowly, just centimetres away from hitting the van in front of him.
Something is definitely bothering Gagan,' said Ruby. He is nervous about something. He is unsure- uncertain- every word Shlok utters is a surprise to him. He seems to be gathering information as much as we were. He wanted to be present when we questioned Shlok. We know he is a brilliant strategist. With every detail he consumes, he is going to be ready with a strong defence.'
You mean- he is going to pose problems for us in the future?'
Most certainly,' replied Ruby. A strategist always forecasts the problems. Before we question him, he will be ready with the answers. It's going to be a hard game against him.'
We need to be 100% sure whenever we approach them. They can easily use their power to turn the media towards them and against us. They can play the victim,' said Vedant.
The media is still speculating. We haven't made any arrest and that's going to raise a lot of questions. Our work would be questioned I guess.'
Just not by the media- I will be questioned by the Commissioner as well. We have to quickly make some breakthrough to show everyone that we are putting our best efforts. First thing we can do is release a picture of Jana Yadav. Identifying him is very important. And Ruby...I want you to work on Shlok and Gurubhai and their relationship equation.'
On it!'
---------
What a surprise! What a surprise! The disciple is here,' commented Shakti as Sagar walked into her lab.
I can see more annoyance than surprise on your face,' said Sagar casually, jumping one of the high chairs by the table.
You're proving yourself to be a good detective,' replied Shakti. She never liked Sagar much because of his untimely comments. She found them insensitive. She found him crossing the limits way too many times to her like. Why are you here and not your boss?'
Boss is busy and hence the assistant boss is here,' said Sagar, imitating a deep commander voice. Dont worry! I can pose as many questions as my boss.'
Can you be as quiet as your boss?' asked Shakti.
Sagar smirked. He scratched his head and ruffled his hair, looking around the lab with childish interest. Shakti closed her eyes regaining composure. She opened a file to read out her observations. She eyed Sagar with distrust. She wasn't sure if he would relay all the details to Vedant.
Don't worry. I am not careless as I look,' said Sagar reading Shakti's mind.
Gurubhai's post-mortem is done. He died of Subdural Haematoma,' said Shakti. The fall caused his death.'
Sagar sat with a serious look. A suicide after all?'
I said fall. It could be suicide or someone could have just pushed him. The stomach contents indicate he hadn't eaten any normal food in his last day. I doubted he might have been suffocated- but after observation and a few tests, it seems Gurubhai must have just slept face down on some pillow. There is no indication that he suffocated. The wind pipes and lungs are normal.'
Never liked The Human Body chapter right from school,' commented Sagar.
For once, Shakti wished Vedant had come. Here is something that might interest you. Gurubhai's BAC- Blood Alcohol Content- is very high. 0.32.'
Oh!' exclaimed Sagar. That could have well killed him too...just that it didn't.'
It's not very high to kill him. He just would not have been in his senses. He could have jumped without his knowledge...'
Or someone could have asked him and he could have blindly followed it too...'
Possible. I pulled his medical records from his family doctor.'
Aren't patient files confidential?'
For the police. I am a doctor.'
Oh yeah,' said Sagar as if it dawned on him just then.
Anyway- according to our victim's last medical report- his BAC was 0.18.'
And this report was when?'
6 months before. According to the doctor, Gurubhai always had a steady BAC ranging from 0.15 to 0.20.'
The doctor never did anything to put a stop to this drinking problem?'
He tried. But Gurubhai gave no qualms. The point is- Gurubhai's BAC at the time of his death is unusually too high. He must have drank more than what he usually did. Why?'
Sagar considered the question and made a mental note. Was he on any other medication?'
Regular painkillers. Nothing out of the ordinary.'
Forensics from Gurubhai's room?'
They are cataloguing. Will get in touch if something pops up.'
Even if it's a toast?'
Get out, Sagar,' said Shakti calmly getting back to her work.
What about the other bodies? Nothing on them? You don't seem too helpful, doctor.' Sagar continued irritating nature.
Rajeev died of accident injuries. Rafi was shot cold blood. The other guy,' Shakti looked at her notes for confirmation, Jana Yadav, he died falling from the third floor. You don't seem to be giving me challenging bodies, Mr Sagar.'
Sagar raised his hands in surrender. Send in the reports, Doc. I'll inform the boss.'
I will, I will. Now go. I have lot of other things to do.'
Sagar turned to leave.
Oh yes. Just a minute. There is one more thing,' said Shakti, stopping Sagar at the door. It might be nothing. Gurubhai has a strong fire scar on the back of his right shoulder. It seems pretty old. The family doctor said he has no clue about it.'
Sagar nodded with a smile and left the lab.
------------
Gagan slumped on his office chair, rolling back a little. With closed eyes, he stretched his neck upwards and then down, and quickly to his left and right, evoking sounds of little cracks. He removed his specs and rubbed his eyes. He looked at the huge pile of files towered on his table with weariness. A separate set of files sat in the middle of the table with sticky notes pasted on top with instructions. He tapped on the laptop but it refused to switch on. He forgot to connect the charger and now the battery had drained out. He quickly plugged in the charger, and within seconds, the laptop displayed the welcome screen.
He checked the email immediately and let out a sigh of frustration. He was trying to contact someone for the past two days and there had been absolutely no reply from the other side. He wasn't sure if the no response was genuine or if there was more to the silence. The work he had assigned was still pending. He wanted to know the status. He dialled the number again. No response. He felt it was time to take matter into his own hands.
He unlocked the table drawers and opened the lowest one. He pulled out a file. It was a write up. The title read, Star Industrialist plays victim!' A sudden rush of emotion overtook Gagan as he closed his eyes to compose himself. He closed the file to read the name on the cover. Netra'. This entire article, if and when published was going to take the country by storm. There were going to be huge controversies rising up keeping the gossipers and the unemployed busy. Consequently, it would also directly lead to increasing sales in tea shops.
He tried the number again but no response. He couldn't let anything go wrong. He had to right the wrong before it even happened.
Netra!
Gagan picked up his phone again and called, and this time there was an answer.
Netra? Gagan here...I think we should meet.'
---------
Everyone, settle down,' said Vedant in the squad room. His team took their seats. They were going to have the briefing- discuss their findings, theorise and decide on the next plan of action.
The shrill of the phone interrupted the beginning of the discussion. Heera received the information and looked at her boss.
A young girl has been found murdered,' she said seriously.
Silence descended.
Why are we getting the case?' asked Sagar, confused. We are already dealing with multiple cases.'
Heera replied, The body was found at Karmarkar Autofactory!'
