Part 4

Birth Of Sage Aastik--Birth Of The Snakes And Garud--Saagar Manthan

Sage Shaunak Stopped Sauti And Said, "Dear Sauti, I Wish to Hear About The Lineage Of The Great Sage Who Saved The Snakes During King Janmejaya's Sarpa-yagya." Thus, Sauti Said,

Sage Aastik, Who Saved the Snakes, Was The Son Of Sage Jaratkaru, The Greatest Of Sages. He Spent All His Time In Penance And Meditation. One Day, While Traveling, He Saw A Few Humans Hanging Upside Down With A Few Tufts Of Grass For Support Only. He, Out of Curiosity Asked Them, "O Great Men, Why Are You Hanging Here Like This ?" They Replied, "We Are The Ancestors Of A Sage Called Jaratkaru, Who Is So Busy In Penance, That He Did Not Produce An Offspring, And Thus Letting Us Suffer Like This." Upon Hearing This, The Sage Fell On His Knees And Asked For Forgiveness Promising To Marry And Have A Child.

Sage Jaratkaru Thought, That As He Was Not Going To Marry For His Own Pleasure Or For Acquiring Wealth, He Would Only Take That Girl As Alms Whose Name Will Be Same As His. At This Time, Vaasuki, The King Of The Snakes Came To Him, With The Proposal Of Marriage To His [Vaasuki's] Sister Jaratkaru. In Course Of Time, They Had A Son Whom They Named As Aastik.

Sauti Stopped. Sage Shaunak Said, "I Have Heard That The Mother Of The Snakes Had Cursed Them Thus That They Should Burn In The Sarpa-yagya Of King Janmejaya. I Wish To Hear The Full Story." Sauti Thus Said,

In The Ancient Times, There Were Two Beautiful Daughters To Prajapati Daksh, Namely Kadru And Vinata. They Were Both Married To Sage Kashyap. One Day, Sage Kashyap Asked Both Of Them About Their Wish To Have Children. Kadru Said, "I Want Thousand Equally Powerful Snakes As My Sons." And Vinata Said, "I Want Two Sons Who Will Be More Powerful Than Those Of Kadru's." Kashyap Fulfilled Both Of Their Wishes. In Time Kadru Gave Birth To A Thousand Eggs While Vinata Gave Birth To Two Eggs.

After Five Hundred Years, Kadru's Eggs Broke, And Out Came 1000 Mighty Snakes. But Nothing Happened To Vinata's Eggs. Out Of Impatience, She Broke One Of The Eggs, And Saw That The Child Had The Upper Part Of The Body, But The Lower Part Was Still Under-grown. The Child Cursed His Mother, That As, Due To Her Greed, His [Child's] Body Became Imperfect, Vinata Would Have To Remain Kadru's Slave For Five Hundred Years. He Instructed His Mother Not To Break The Egg, From Which, In Good Time, A Son Will Emerge Who Will Rescue Her From Her Slavery. Saying Thus, The Child Became Arun And Rose Up In The Sky To Become The Charioteer Of Lord Surya (The Sun God). Garud, The Second Son, Was Also Born, In time, And Rose to The Air In Hunger.

One Day Kadru And Vinata Saw Uchchaeshrava, Lord Indra's Horse.

Sage Shaunak Stopped Sauti And Said, "O Sauti, Now I Wish To Hear The Story Of Saagar Manthan (Ocean Churning), From Which The Horse Uchchaeshrava Emerged," Sauti Bowed And Narrated,

The Gods Sat On The Sumeru Hill Discussing About How To Churn The Ocean To Get Amrit (Nectar). Lord Vishnu Suggested Taking The Help Of The Demons, To Churn Out Nectar. Naag Ananta, The King Of The Snakes, Uprooted The Mandar Hill And Decided To Be The Rope For Churning. The Demons Held The Snake By His Head While The Gods Held Him By His Tail. This Churning Caused A Great Imbalance In The Nature. But In All This, Mandar Hill Was Sinking, Causing The Ocean To Cause Floods And Wash Away Whole Cities. Lord Vishnu, The Lotus-eyed One, Took The Form Of A Great Tortoise, The Kurma Avatar, And Held The Hill Steady On His Back.

Then From The Churned Ocean Came Out Chandra (The Moon), From The Ghee That Was Produce Came Out Sindhusuta (Ocean's Daughter) Lakshmi, Sura Devi (The Goddess Of Liquor), The White-skinned Horse Uchchaeshrava, Shri Hari's Pendant Kaustubh, The Flower Of Paarijaat And The Dhenu (Cow) Called Surabhi. Chandra, Lakshmi, Sura Devi, Surabhi Dhenu And Uchchaeshrava Went To The Gods. Then Came Out Anantar Dhanvantari With The Kalash (Pot) Of Amrit. On seeing Him, The Demons Rushed After Him, To Get The Amrit. And Dhanvantari Fled And Took Shelter Behind Lord Narayan. Then Came Out The Elephant With Four Teeth And Thousand Trunks, Who Was Immediately Captured By Indra, The King Of Gods.

But Due To The Excess Churning Of The Ocean, Out Came The Poison Called Kalkoot. On Brahma's Request, Lord Shiva Swallowing The Poison Saved The World, Gaining The Name 'Neelkanth' (One With A Blue Throat).

The Gods And Demons Now Started Fighting For The Amrit. Lord Vishnu, Took The Form Of An Extremely Seductive Lady, Mohini, And Made All Of Them Sit In Lines. While She (He) Kept Them Hooked To Her (His) Dance, She (He) Slowly Gave The Amrit To The Gods.

But There Was One Demon, Called Raahu, Who Had Understood This Trick, And Had Secretly Changed His Attire And Sat With The Gods. He Managed To Take In The Amrit, But Surya And Chandra Cautioned Vishnu, Who Immediately Summoned His Sudarshan Chakra And Separated The Head Of The Demon From His Body, Before He Could Actually Drink The Amrit.

His Body Died, But The Head Of The Demon Became Immortal. Since Then There Is A Constant Struggle Between Sun-Moon And Raahu.

Then Lord Vishnu Came Back To His original Form And The Demons Had Accept Their Defeat.

I'm Done Now, Actually I Always Prefer Writing In One Go...Exam Essays Have Their Own Effect Na...😆...And Yes, Really Shaunak Is Impatient, But You See, He Has To Be...Otherwise How Will We Know The Side Stories...😉
