However, Amarr Upadhyay is back in the running with Viraasat | ||

Amarr Upadhyay has often been dubbed as a one-serial wonder. But strangely no other actor (except Ronit Roy) could step into the shoes of his character Mihir Virani. The fact remains that he was the original Mihir of Kyunki and will continue to remain so in public memory. However the other (bitter) fact is also that the actor who made the character so popular hasn't had anything to write home about after Kyunki A few easily forgettable films and unmentionable roles in soaps later Upadhyay is now back to the coveted prime time slot with BR Chopra's Viraasat, a daily which premieres next week on Star Plus. We catch up with him on the sets of Viraasat. Excerpts from an interview: It has been a while since you were on the prime time slot Well, I guess in a way, it has been some time now. But then again, I do not measure my performance in terms of how many 'prime time' serials I am working on. However it does feel wonderful to play one of the pivotal characters in a serial as big as this. It is the best role since Kyunki I hope I can bring back the charisma of Mihir Virani! So, what is your role in Viraasat all about? I play an idealistic IAS officer. He stands for the truth and goes to any extent for the sake of his principles! I play Sangeeta Ghosh's brother and Aman Verma plays the antagonist. Viraasat has a lot of big names. Do you find yourself and your character marginalised? Not at all! In fact I have been working with big names ever since Dekh Bhai Dekh. And yet I have been able to carve out my identity as an actor over the years. As for Viraasat, I think each character is extremely crucial and so are the actors playing them. What's happening on the film front? Have the flops dissuaded you? Well, right now I am doing this lavishly shot Bhojpuri film called Kab Kahba Tu: I Love You. I have never been dissuaded by flops. I take each and every film or television role as per its merits and opportunities. So would you rather do roles like Mihir Virani or the chocolate boy roles in movies? I don t want the chocolate boy image! Nor do I want to be stereotyped in typical soap opera roles. As far as my preferences go, I often get bored with television primarily because the serials run for years on end! Films give you instant popularity and they are always made with an end in sight! However I have been making conscious efforts to balance both. Are you satisfied with Kyunki after all the 20-year leaps? I haven't been watching the show lately but I think even if they keep on making these leaps, the popularity won t ever decrease. It has become part of everyone's lives now. Besides, Ekta and the rest are professionals. They can never go wrong with Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi! |
