Now's the future

We caught up with TV actress Sangeeta Ghosh who invests in the future with hard work!

Despite being a popular face on the small screen, of late, actress Sangeeta Ghosh has been conspicuous by her absence in television serials.

Lucknow Times caught up with the actress on her recent visit to the city to find out if it was a deliberate decision on her part to do less work.

"Yes," she answers, "With one project at a time, you can concentrate more on your work and do your home work for the role as well.

And then lead roles don't leave you with much time to do many serials at a time. Moreover, I like to maintain exclusivity."

With her roles in Aroona Irani's serials, Sangeeta does seem to be Irani's lucky mascot. She accepts the two gel very well as team.

"We both understand each other completely. She (Irani) knows her responsibilities as a producer while I realise what she expects out of me as an artist.

This way, we both complement each other," quips the actress, adding that she tends to take more interest in Irani's projects due to the bonding they share. "We even share the same date of birth!" she chuckles.

While her affinity to Aroona Irani is pretty evident, not many know that she has been a successful child artist as well and has worked with people like Hrishikesh Mukherjee in Hum Hindustani, Basu Chatterji (in NFDC's Durga and Sarita Ki Shartein) and Lekh Tandon.

"I consider myself fortunate to have got a chance to work with the stalwarts of the film industry, and it has been an enriching experience," says Sangeeta.

The actress maintains that saas-bahu sagas are still popular and enjoy a good viewership even now as "families sit and watch them together". So why didn't she act in one? Sangeeta has her own reasons for that and without revealing much, she says, "But hats off to them for being able to have sustained for so long."

While most TV actors maintain that though film offers have come their way, nothing has been interesting enough, Sangeeta is candidly confesses that it's not easy to get into films.

"So what if I have all the pre-requisites to be a Bollywood heroine, like a pretty face, great figure etc? There is already a Preity Zinta, Kajol and Rani (Mukherji) in the industry. The most important thing is that you need to know the people in Bollywood."

However, Sangeeta does assert that the gap between the small and big screen is narrowing, "thanks to people like Manoj Bajpai, Ashutosh Rana and even Anita Hansanandani (of Kkavyanjali)".

She adds, "Anita is lucky to have Ektaa (Kapoor) with her. But Shah Rukh Khan has been the luckiest TV star in Bollywood," says this ardent Abhishek Bachchan fan.

So, what are her plans for the future? "How much of the future can you really plan?" she shoots back with a smile adding, "You can only invest in the future by working hard today.

So I am concentrating on my upcoming show for now." How's that for being focused

Weepie Vaidehi replaces Jassi
By Subhash K Jha

Missing Jassi Ahluwalia? Still think Jassi jaisi koi nahin? Sony has found seductive ways of weaning Jassi addicts away from the week-night fix.

Two new serials produced by two of the most reputed software makers have been roped in to do the needful.

Beginning on 5 June every Monday night at 10 pm, Aroona Irani who has had massive success with soaps like Des Main Nikla Hoga Chand on Star and Mehndi Rang Layegi on Zee brings to Sony a new woman-oriented weepie called Vaidehi.

According to Sony sources Aroona hopes to eradicate the slur of a flop show Rabba Ishq Na Hove on Zee with Vaidehi on the rival channel. Interestingly Aroona has moved away from her favourite leading lady Sangeeta Ghosh (who's apparently busy with Ravi Chopra's Viraasat to go on Star in June) to cast Pallavi Kulkarni, the leading lady of Star's now-defunct Kehta Hai Dil, in the title role of Vaidehi.

Sachin Sharma who played Krishna in Star's Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki will co-star with Pallavi.

Says the Sony source, "The failure of Aroonaji's last serial has left her shell-shocked. She has had almost cent-percent success on television before Rabba Ishq Na Hove. She's more determined than ever to bounce back with Vaidehi."

The other Jassi-replacement, this one for Tuesday nights beginning 13 June is Man Main Hai Vishwas produced by veteran software churner Dheeraj Kumar.

Actor-turnned-tv-producer Dheeraj Kumar goes back a long way on the home medium. He has produced successful soaps like Sansar and some mythologicals for Doordrashan. This time on Sony Kumar is bringing an entirely new experience.

Man Main Hai Vishwas will feature a series of stories on the supernatural experiences of ordinary people.

Says the Sony source, "We've had great success with outright horror shows like Aahat and also with thrillers like CID. But this is the first time that we're doing a straight-on take on supernatural experiences and human faith in inexplicable phenomenon."

It's interesting to note that decades ago such shows propagating occult-supernatural experiences were banned on national television. Today the scenario on satellite television is such that every genre of software is welcome.

With Aroona Irani's Vaidehi and Dheeraj Kumar's Man Main Hai Vishwas occupying Sony's prestigious slot vacated by Jassi it's time for the channel to cross its finger and hope the substitutes work.

"It's always tough to replace a long-running addictive soap. We hope Aroonaji and Dheerajji with their long experience on the home medium will divert audiences' attention into the new experience."

Two other major serials will come on air shortly to occupy the Wednesday and Thursday primetime slots vacated by Jassi.

First Look: Meet Vaidehi

Aroona Irani (inset), now a prolific TV producer, returns to the small screen with her latest serial – Vaidehi: Ek Aur Agni Pareeksha.
The story revolves around spirited 21-year old Vaidehi (Pallavi Kulkarni, left), who comes from a typical middle-class family, without any grand ambitions. Things change when she marries Aryavardhan (Sachin Sharma), scion to a big business empire. The story is about how she falls in love with Aryavardhan and tries to adjust to an environment completely different from the place she was born and brought up in.
The honeymoon is short lived though, and Vaidehi soon finds herself in trouble. Like her earlier serials, Aruna Irani's Vaidehi too deals with how a girl fights back. Vaidehi is a challenge for Sony in more ways than one. Firstly, it is going to replace the once iconic Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. Secondly, it is to challenge the spot currently dominated by Star Plus' Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki.
As N P Singh, COO of SET India Pvt Ltd, says, "After Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi, the 10 pm slot on the channel will feature a variety of interesting genres -- drama, real life stories, thriller, detective -- that make for wholesome entertainment. Vaidehi will find an echo with millions of women across the country who spend their life in subjugation and despair. "
Aroona Irani is pleased. "I am glad Sony liked the concept and I hope Vaidehi will live up to their expectations. It is a story with a social message, about living life to the fullest and following your own dreams."
For Pallavi Kulkarni, this is a comeback after two years. She wanted to take a break after Kehta Hai Dil and spend time with her family. She agreed to Vaidehi only after a call from Aroona Irani's office explaining the role to her. Pallavi agreed immediately and feels this was a role worth waiting for.
Apart from Kulkarni and Sachin Sharma, Vaidehi also stars Aroona Irani herself and Kiran Kumar. An interesting omission is Irani's former favourite Sangeeta Ghosh.
Vaidehi will be telecast starting June 5, Mondays at 10 pm on Sony Entertainment Television.

Sachin Sharma

Partying with paan

Actor Sachin Sharma treats Vaidehi crew to a paan buffet

Sachin Sharma who plays the lead role of Aryavardhan Jaishingh in Vaidehi…Ek Aur Agni Pareeksha had a unique party on the sets for his birthday on June 20. No sooner had the crew finished their lunch than they were treated to loads of the most scrumptious paan available in the city. "I'm a total paan aficionado and I wanted to do something different for everyone on the sets. So I ordered over hundreds of paans of every possible variety from this famous Muchchad paanwalla in town. The paans turned out to be excellent." The crew admits that the paans were very tasty. "There was cake too, but I'm happy we had this paan party. Everyone just freaked out and spoiled their clothes eating paan," says Sachin.

"My entire family is in Delhi, so I couldn't spend my birthday with them. I plan to take a few things for kids in an orphanage. I've never done this before and I really feel this birthday is turning out to be special!" he says.

Sachin's unusual birthday plans!

Sachin Sharma has planned something very different for his twenty fifth birthday - it's a little bizzare, but who cares as long as there's a party happening!

Sachin Sharma: Birthday boy!

The actor is a paan freak and is all set to throw a pan party for his unit members post lunch on 20 June on the sets of Vaidehi in suburban Mumbai.

The actor is ordering assorted pans from a renowned panwala (called Muchchar panwala) in town.
"I am going to treat the unit to some amazing desi kattha pan which according to me is the world's best paan. There are about seven to eight varieties of sweet pan and each one is about five inches in length. I wanted to do something different for my birthday this year. Besides, I am also on a diet. I am not partying on my birthday as it is a weekday and it will be tedious for my friends to party and go to work the next day so the party will happen over the weekend," smiles the birthday boy.

We ask the actor if he made any birthday resolutions this year… "My real resolution is to sign some projects on small as well as big screen now. I'll try to turn 17 because the younger one gets the better it is," says a philosophical Sachin.
The actor also plans to visit an orphanage in the evening and spend some quality time with the children there.

So here's one actor who seems to be grinning from ear to ear as he has two plum shows (Vaidehi and Pyaar Ke Do Naam…) in his kitty and has just returned from an European jaunt. Here's wishing him a great birthday!

TELEVISION
Of corporate control & star trek in the desert

One from the heart

Pallavi as Karishma in Kehta Hai Dil... Spreading magic
Pallavi as Karishma in Kehta Hai Dil… Spreading magic.

KARISHMA may not be the favourite word at Sahara Manoranjan but it sure is spreading magic at Star Plus. Pallavi Kulkarni who plays Karishma in Kehta Hai Dil is over the moon as the serial's popularity pushes northwards. " I am overjoyed with the way my character has shaped up. I have a lot to thank God for," says Pallavi.

Indeed she has. Life took a dramatic turn when this hotel management graduate got her portfolio clicked by Gautam Rajyadhaksh. Assignments started rolling in instantly— LG, ICICI, Cadburys, Kodak, Nerolac, Dabur Amla, Limca and more. And then came Had Kar Di, Aaj Bhi Ateet, Kya Hadsaa Kya Haqeeqat and now Kehta Hai Dil.

But Pallavi says she's had her heady tryst with stardom and is now slowing down. " I am only doing Kehta Hai Dil which occupies me for 15 days a month."

What about the remaining 15 days? " Oh, those are for myself. I do ads, read a lot, spend quality time with my family and catch up with friends. I don't want work to burn me out." Which is why she is cold to the idea of hot new offers.

Sachin Sharma back with Aroona Irani's new show

Sachin Sharma last seen in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii as Krishna and as Vedant inTumhari Disha has been roped in by Aroona Irani to play the lead opposite Pallavi Kulkarni for her new show tentatively titled Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai for Sony.

Sachin Sharma: All set to play Aryan

"I play Aryan in the show. It's a very different character and people have not seen me in this look. It's a family drama and there will be a love track between me and Pallavi in the show. The story moves with the lady (Pallavi Kulkarni) dealing with her problems but in a different manner. I am sure that viewers will look forward to my new character," says Sachin who is currently only shooting for the Aroona Irani's show and had opted out of CID Special Bureau in December.

The show is likely to go on air by June and is expected to be a one hour weekly. It has a host of talented actors like Nikkhil Arya, Kiran Kumar, Himanshi Chowdhury besides Aroona Irani herself in the show. Sachin is considering a few Bhojpuri film offers and wants to take up a daily soap soon.

Sources tell us that Aaj Phir...will be a love triangle of sorts (between Pallavi Kulkarni, Sachin Sharma and Nikkhil Arya), so much like the Aroona Irani shows in the past.

Vaidehi - interesting storyline; confusing execution!

Sony's Vaidehi has all the ingredients of a successful drama, but only, it's a wee bit confusing! Well, let be start from the beginning! First, there's this fairytale wedding, the poor girl meets rich guy track...but the interesting bit is that the story makes no bones about the fact that there's a twist lurking in the background. Add to that a queer mix of mystery about the previous wife, who's supposedly dead....but in reality...not so!

The storyline attempts to delve in matters hitherto unknown on television - impotency. These are early days to say how the issue will be handled in the show, but the very fact that it's central theme is this issue calls for a pat on the back for both the channel and the production house.

One thing I can't help but mention - Sony has quite a line up oppressed women, dominated by their menfolk. Thodi Khushi... and now Vaidehi. Aroona Irani plays the silently suffering mother-in-law who wants to help her daughter-in-law to say 'no' to the marriage which the latter misunderstands as rejection.

Further dialogues like - "Is ghar ki bahue...pinjre mein band hai" and "chote ghar ki ladki...." are so cliche and it's difficult for the 21 Century audience to grasp what the makers want to convey - why would a woman want to continue a marriage that hasn't been consummated (and will never be!!!!!); how can she fall in love when she hardly knows the man and above everything else if she sees her husband's child running around the house, wouldn't she atleast be curious to know how an impotent man manage to produce a child??????? Vaidehi's silence is killing and it goes against the very idea of women's liberation....something that men are going hoarse over!!!!

Vaidehi's set is opulent, the women are laden with jewellery and the men flaunt the finest suits, but it's the storyline that lacks cohesion. The characters too are a little vague. Sachin Sharma is weak and Pallavi Kulkarni does what she does best - put up a sad face and act resilient in the face of diversity, her character is so much like the one she played in Star Plus' Kehta Hain Dil. What would have been really commendable if Vaidehi's character had grown or even tried showing signs of rebellion like the similar charcater in Balaji Telefilms' Koshish - Ek Aasha where Kajal, played by Sandhya Mridul is married to a mentally challenged guy without her knowledge and how she rebels from the very first day!

What struck me more was the fact that Irani is reputed to portray strong willed women, who showed a lot of character from the very beginning of the show - be it in Des..., Mehendi Tere... or Rabba...In case of Vaidehi, she seems to be diverting from her USP. It's unnerving to watch a bechari protagonist this time.

But again, maybe I am expecting too much too early....maybe Vaidehi too will emerge out of her meek shell and show a mind that's ready to explore, ask questions and at the same time make decisions of her own.

Sachin's character too turned completely negative in the last episode (telecast 26 June) and it's anybody's guess now that he doesn't care much for his wife!!!! Where the story furthers from here is something to watch out for.

All in all, there's something in the show that has kept me hooked...but even I can't overlook the loopholes that are staring me on the face - the makers need to mop off the dirty spots, and from then on the show can only get better....
