Chapter 25: A Sacrifice that must be made
Rashmi and Ammo became alarmed. They stared at each other in disbelief and didn't know what happened to Suman.
"What happened to Suman?" asked Rashmi nervously. "What did she do!?"
"Go see for yourself!" Nani shouted as she pulled Rashmi by the wrist.
She brought her to the guest bedroom near the master bedroom. Suman was laying on the ground and starring at Rashmi in an uneasy way. It looked like she had stabbed her wrist with a knife.
"Suman! What have you done to yourself? Who or what made you do this?"
"She didn't do anything, you did something!" hollered Suman's grandma.
"Me? What did..."
"You stole everything from me. My life, my love. You took it all!"
Rashmi stood there shocked and realized that Leher was right and she was wrong once again. She distrusted her loyal friend, and realized that Suman was still the same.
"Get lost!" Suman shouted and started coughing.
"Suman drink some water," Rashmi said as she held a glass with water.
"The people who kept giving you poison all these years are now serving you water. Drink it sweetie," said her grandma.
Rashmi and her mother stared at Suman's grandma and asked themselves why she said such a thing.
"What happened? Couldn't resist hearing the truth? I have never seen people like you ever in my life! This family gave you respect, a place to stay, and relaxation. Upon that, you two disrespected us and gave us nothing! You both just wanted to take Suman's life for your own!"
"Suman, can't you see or listen to what your grandma is saying?" Rashmi shouted.
"Why? What else would you want her to see? Do you want her to see you and Veer take the three rounds around the pit of fire? See Veer tie the Joraa necklace around your neck? Hear the priest at the end declare that the Joraa has been done, the three promises have been promised, and this match should be together through thick and thin?"
Rashmi ignored Suman's grandma and focused on Suman.
"Suman what happened to you? Tell me the truth! What's bothering you?"
"He's mine," she was struggling to say, "Only mine."
"Who's yours Suman? Your talking about Karan, right? What happened? Did you have a fight with him or something?"
Ammo and Nani looked at each other confused. They had no idea who Rashmi was talking about.
"No!" she shouted. After a long pause she said, "With Veer. I want Veer."
Rashmi widened her eyes and stared at her.
"I love Veer!"
Rashmi felt a million lightning bolts go through her chest after she heard Suman say "Veer". She was confused and shocked. How could she like 'Veer'? I thought she liked 'Karan'?
"What kind of nonsense is this! You. You. You love Veer!?" Rashmi was struggling to ask. She was not expecting this sudden change from her friend. "Why didn't you tell me before!? I thought you said you hated Veer. You never even wanted to be with him."
"She made a mistake! People make mistakes, you know!" Nani spat on Rashmi's cheek. Rashmi wiped the spit with her wrist.
"Ammo, I don't understand anything, what's going on?"
"What do you mean you don't understand anything? She likes Veer, so give him to her!" hollered Nani.
"I understand everything, Rasham," Ammo whispered. "I understand everything! Suman doesn't like Veer, she just wants to ruin your life again and I will not let this happen again! This is what she's always been doing: stealing everything you have and leaving you with nothing in your pockets! You two know, and Mr. and Mrs. Thakur know, that Veer asked for Rashmi's hand in front of everyone! She can't just betray him like that! That will be a disgrace to her name! I will not let this happen under any circumstance!"
The ladies began having an argument. Suman screamed like a girl from a horror movie to get everyone's attention. They turned to her and looked at her. She was in a horrible condition. She looked like a crazy, mental girl who's hair was frizzled and uncombed.
"If I don't get Veer, I will jump out that window and kill myself! I want Veer and I love him so much!"
"No, Suman! Are you crazy? You'll kill yourself for Veer? I won't let you die!"
Rashmi looked at Ammo hastily and tensed up. She had no idea what to do. She couldn't understand anything. She realized that she should have taken Leher's warning seriously and not as a joke.
"What is Suman saying, Ammo? I don't understand anything!"
"What have I not done for you Rashmi? I did everything to keep you happy in life. What ever was mine, I gave to you. My friends, my school, and especially my parents love. Now, I won't share anything with you! I love Veer, understand? I'll be their families' daughter-in-law! I will be his future wife!"
"But you always said you never liked him and especially never wanted your Joraa with him, so what made you change your mind so quickly?"
"Your heart is as hard as a rock! She made a mistake! She never realized what place she had for Veer in her heart. And you two could never make her understand that!"
Rashmi's mom tried explaining to Nani that she knows Suman is playing another game and is playing with Rashmi's life. She tells her not to do anything to ruin her daughter's life. Ammo takes Rashmi's hand, but she refused, and stopped Ammo. She walked up to Suman sadly but with confidence.
"Suman, I love Veer a lot and I would do anything for him, but upon that, I love you more and therefore, I am willing to let you have your Joraa with Veer."
Suman put on a big smile filled with huge expression and hugged Rashmi tightly.
"Rashmi, are you crazy? You can't let her do that! You're betraying Veer! Veer will be very upset when he sees Suman instead of you!"
"Ammo, do you want Suman to die? She'll die if she doesn't get Veer! I'll explain everything to him later."
Rashmi and Ammo started an argument, but Ammo failed to make her understand. She had to let Rashmi's life be ruined once again.
Chapter: 26: Time To Give Up
All four ladies crossed the hall into Suman's room for them to change their clothes. Rashmi gave her clothes and jewelry to Suman, and wore something else. Before Suman could change into it, Ammo had something to say to her.
She told her that she had given Rashmi so much in life and now today, Rashmi was sacrificing her happiness just to make her happy. She also told her that she will now be receiving Veer.
Suman gave Rashmi a hug and went downstairs with Rashmi's mom and her grandma. Rashmi had to stay upstairs. While the Joraa was going on, Rashmi kept repenting her mistakes and kept asking a picture of Suman if what Leher said about her really was correct.
Suman and Veer took their three rounds around the pit of fire, and as each round was made, Rashmi cried even more. Veer tied the Joraa necklace around Suman's neck, not knowing that she was Suman, and not the girl who he loved so much. Then the priest asked Suman and Veer the three promises they had to keep:
#1: They would be together throughout life from thick and thin
#2: They would care for each other no matter what circumstances go on in their lives
#3: They would follow all of the rules of living a peaceful life as saathi's, a name for people who have had their Joraa.
They both agreed. The priest continued on with some more prayers as they were holding hands. They proceeded towards the front doors after the prayers were over. Before leaving, Suman hugged her parents, grandma and then went to go hug Ammo last since she was pretending to be Rashmi, but Ammo refused. She stopped her arms from coming to give her a hug and set them back. The crowd stared at Ammo but she didn't care. She didn't care that she was creating a scene because the girl under the veil wasn't her daughter.
"Go with Veer, honey. It's getting late."
She went to Veer and he took her hand. Suman was feeling quite nervous that if he would see her face in the car.
"Let's go Rashmi," he said and then went into the car and left.
Chapter 27: Veer's Tantrum
Veer and Suman reached home and Veer's mom did a welcoming ritual for Suman. After the ritual, Veer took Suman upstairs to his room and locked the door and then sat on the bed.
"Rashmi, I'm really happy. After today, we'll spend every waking minute together. You look as beautiful as an angel in your dress. But I want to see your beautiful face even more. Why don't you take off your veil?"
Suman sat there and didn't remove it. She thought to herself about how she could prevent Veer from seeing her face. She gulped and was prepared to say something. "Um, no, Veer. I'm fine. Why don't you look at my face tomorrow?" she asked as she toned her voice to sound like Rashmi.
"Oh, I get it. You want me to take it off, don't you? Alright then."
No! Please don't! she said in her mind. Please don't! I'm begging you!
Veer had his face close to the veil and slowly uncovered her veil. Suman kept dunking her head farther down so Veer wouldn't recognize it. As he slowly lifted the veil after uncovering it, he saw that the girl under the veil was Suman, and not the girl he expected. He immediately stood up and bumped his back against the closet.
"Suman! What the heck are you doing here? Where's Rashmi?"
Suman got really scared and said, "Rashmi, Rashmi is at home. You didn't have your Joraa with Rashmi; you had it with me." She looked down in embarrassment.
"Suman! Whatever you did in your room, I didn't tell anyone. It was my mistake believing in you, otherwise you wouldn't have reached such a high level. You should be ashamed of yourself!"
"No Veer, please listen to me. I'm saying the truth; you had your Joraa with me. See, you tied the Joraa necklace onto my neck. In fact, Rashmi refused to come downstairs, so I was forced to come. She didn't even want to have her Joraa with you. I left everything just to be with you. I'm telling the truth!"
"Enough Suman! I've heard enough! I don't want to hear another negative thing about her. I already told you this before: I love Rashmi, and only Rashmi. And she will be this families' daughter-in-law. No person, ritual, or law in this world can change my decision. Neither can you. Do you understand?"
"What did I do wrong, Veer? Rashmi herself refused to come and sent me here. You had your Joraa with me!"
"I don't accept this betrayal as a Joraa!" he shouted and left the room.
He ran downstairs and before he could leave Mai stopped him. "Are you going to Suman's house?" she asked.
"Mai; you knew that was Suman?"
"Yes. I could see a glimpse of her face through the veil, but I only figured that out when we reached home. Veer, I can understand your pain, but you took the three rounds with her and made your promises with her. She is now this families' daughter-in-law. Nothing can be changed now."
"What are you saying? I love Rashmi, and will only accept her! I'm going to go get her!"
"Veer. Wait!" his mom shouted as he left.
Chapter 28: Veer and Rashmi's downfall
It was 1 a.m. when Veer arrived at the Thakur family's mansion. Everyone was upstairs in their bedrooms when he came. The foyer was dark but the decoration lights were still on. Veer looked around to see if anyone was downstairs. After looking for some time and seeing no one, he took a step towards the stairs and screamed Rashmi's name at the top of his lungs. He kept repeating her name until the lights turned on. Mr. and Mrs. Thakur, Ammo, and Nani rushed downstairs.
"Veer, what are you doing here so late at night?" Mr. Thakur demanded.
"I want to know where Rashmi is," Veer replied angrily.
"What happened to Rashmi? Where is she?" asked Mrs. Thakur in a worried tone.
"That's why I'm here: to ask you people where you hid my Rashmi!"
Everyone looked confused, having no idea what he was talking about.
"Mr. Thakur, where is Rashmi?" he asked in a challenging tone. He looked at Ammo and said, "Ammo, you should know where she is! Why don't you tell me?"
Ammo and Nani were startled and couldn't say a word.
"Oh, wow! You people sure do keep an eye on your daughters. No one knows where Rashmi is!"
"Veer, what are you saying? Rashmi should be at your house. You just had your Joraa with her. Why are you searching for her here? I don't understand."
"I don't understand it myself, Mr. Thakur. I came here to have my Joraa with Rashmi and did, but when we returned to my house, she disappeared! She has to be here!"
"But if she isn't at your house, who is?" asked Mrs.Thakur.
"Are you sure you want to know? Do you really want to know who did all this? Okay, I'll tell you. All of this was done by your own daughter,"
"My own daughter?" asked Mr. Thakur
"Yes, your own daughter! Your elder daughter, Suman!"
Everyone stared at him, frightened. They seemed like they thought he was lying.
"What? Think I'm lying? Alright, why don't you call both girls' names and see who comes down."
"Rashmi! Suman!" shouted Mr. Thakur. Rashmi opened the door of Suman's room and came to a stop at the top of the stairs. After a couple moments everyone saw her. He was shocked to see that she was still here, while Suman had went off and had her Joraa without his permission.
Rashmi came towards Veer and looked at Mr. Thakur.
"Veer is telling the truth. He had his Joraa with Suman, not me. I'm so sorry, Veer! Please forgive me!" Rashmi said, tears leaking down her face as she put her hands together to seek forgiveness.
"Why are you apologizing?" he asked. "These people probably forced you into saying no."
"Veer, no one forced me to do anything! This was my choice, and mine alone."
"No it wasn't! Someone must have forced you. You love me. Who told you to do this?"
Before Rashmi could speak, Ammo opened her mouth.
"Suman did!" she blurted out in full-raged anger. Her face turned completely red. She was so enraged that she didn't think about how Mr. and Mrs. Thakur would feel. "She forced my daughter to give you up because she said she loved you! I told Rashmi not to listen to her, but Suman started threatening her by saying she would kill herself, so we had no other choice."
After a few heartbeats, she spoke again.
"Mr. Thakur, I would like to apologize if I insulted you or your daughter in any way.
"I can't believe she would do such a thing. I never knew she would fall to such a level," Mr. Thakur said slowly, in a sad tone.
"Oh, she did, alright," said Veer. "Rashmi, I promise you: I will do whatever it takes to get you back, but I will not spend my whole life with that devil," he remarked.
After saying his goodbyes to everyone, he left to go home empty-handed.

Chapter 29: Suman Gets Exposed
The next day, Veer brought Suman back to her house. She glanced at her father, who was sitting on the couch with a shocked and upset look on his face. Veer wanted the Thakurs to come to the family room and everyone arrived there. Everyone watched at how he was showing his hatred for Suman by squeezing her injured wrist. He let go of her and she shifted away from him.
"I would like to apologize to Rashmi and her mother for having to give up so much to this rigid girl in life. And I would especially like to apologize to Mr. and Mrs.Thakur, because they had no idea who started this dilemma. I didn't know until yesterday. Only one person in this house has experienced pain from Rashmi; and that is no one other than Suman. A girl who had made such a huge sacrifice for two rich families by having her Joraa with me. Would you like to know why she did this? Do you want to know the painful truth?"
"Yes, we do," Suman's parents said, gazing sadly at their daughter.
"She did this because she was jealous of Rashmi. She wanted so-called 'revenge' on her because she thought that she was stealing everything away from her. She wanted to be my families' daughter-in-law; but did she succeed? Nope, not at all. She made such a huge sacrifice, such a huge betrayal that I can't even tell you how bad it is! I mean, has anyone ever done such a thing in their life? How unrealistic! She brought me into a bedroom to trick me into having my Joraa with her, but I refused. Somehow, she convinced Rashmi to back up so that she would take her place. I would like to know how that happened. Rashmi, would you be kind enough to tell us exactly what happened?"
Rashmi stared at Suman's angry face, then glanced back at Veer.
"She told me that she was madly in love with you, and couldn't stand to live without you for a second. She would've died if I didn't let her have her Joraa with you! Why won't you understand, Veer? She is yours now!"
"No, no, these are all lies! You're lying! Tell me the truth! Tell me in detail!"
She remained quiet.
"I'll tell you the truth," said Suman as she stood up beside him.
"Why should I believe that you would tell me the truth? You can't even say the truth!" he said, pushing her away from him. "This thought was clear when I figured out your pattern of trying to avoid me on every single meeting! And ever since then, you've always been telling lies! Rashmi and I had to keep your dirty secret so we wouldn't get embarrassed!"
Mr. and Mrs.Thakur sat there in awkward silence. They could never imagine their daughter doing something so horrifying.
"I had no idea that your lies could ruin so many people's lives! Mr. Thakur, there is someone in this house who has gone so much ahead of you, and that is no other than your daughter, Suman!
"Veer, stop abusing my friend!" Rashmi shouted at him. "Please, just stop it! I can't take it anymore!"
"Friend? What friend? Look at her," Veer said, pointing his finger accusingly at Suman. "You call someone as stupid and selfish as her your friend? She doesn't even love you, nor anyone else. She only loves herself! She doesn't even love the parents who gave her so much in life!"
"Stop it, Veer! That's not true! She loves you and everyone a lot!" Rashmi kept saying as she was trying to back up her friend.
"Enough! I can't take it anymore! If you still want to prove her innocence then do it, see if I care! You may not realize this now, but Suman will continue to ruin your life and make you lose that strength you earned from all of your courage, and make you weak. I swear, if she continues to make your life miserable, I won't leave her alone. Mr. Thakur, I'd like you to take precautions with your daughter and make sure she won't do anything that will embarrass us even more. I'm fed up with her!"
Without even saying bye, Veer left the mansion once again empty-handed.
Chapter 30: She loses her place
Mr. Thakur came towards Suman and gave her a big, tight slap across her face. She looked down, face burning in embarrassment.
"How could you? How could you do such a thing? What have we not done for you, Suman? Did you not receive any comfort and love with Rashmi being here?"
Suman lifted her face and wiped at her tears. She glared at Rashmi before looking back at her father.
"No! I didn't! I absolutely hate that girl! As your love for her increased, my hatred for her increased! She stole everything from me! Why did you always have to give her everything I had? I don't like to share my love!"
"I feel ashamed to call you my real daughter! I could have never expected that from you! You have not only lost my love, but you have also lost all of my privilege and respect. From now on, I only have one daughter, and that is Rashmi. I can't let you live in this house anymore. Therefore, you must stay at Veer's house."
"Papa, what are you saying? You can't do this! Please don't give me such a huge punishment! Where will I live? Ma, please tell Papa not to give me such a huge punishment! Please!"
"Why did you do this, Suman? And why did you hate Rashmi so much? If you wouldn't have done this, you wouldn't be getting such a punishment. It's very shameful for a rich daughter to do this. I'm sorry, but this is for your own benefit," said Mrs.Thakur.
"No! You can't do this! This is wrong!" she shouted. She walks over to Rashmi with an upset face. "This is what you have been waiting for. This is what you wanted right? That my family will hate me and kick me out of the house! Well let me tell you one thing: I will not give up! I will continue to ruin your life, even if it's the last thing I do!"
Mr. Thakur rushed towards Suman and grabbed her arm. He then proceeded to drag her towards the door.
"Papa, what are you doing? Wait, please listen to me!" she shouted as he opened the door and pushed her out of the house.
"Papa!" she shouted from outside as she fell. He quickly slammed and locked the door. He turned away from the door, looking down in embarrassment. Suman laid her head on the door while sitting on the rough rug and sobbed.
She kept knocking on the door and telling her dad to open the door. He ignored her and told the family to do the same.
Chapter 31: A Pleasant Welcoming
Veer's family heard what had happened to Suman and a driver came to get her. Mai was at the door waiting to see her daughter-in-law.
"Welcome, Suman. Please come inside. I know, today was a very rough day for you, but don't worry, everything will be okay," she said and put on a smile.
"Thanks,"
"Come on, let me give you a tour of the house."
Mai showed Suman practically everyone's room in the house. When she showed her her's and Mr. Singh's bedroom, she saw a picture of Veer with another boy.
"Who is the other boy in that picture, Mai?" she asked.
"Oh, he's Veer's younger brother," she said in a depressed tone.
"How come he doesn't live here and how come you never mentioned about him?"
"He has a mental disability, so we decided not to keep him at home because of his serious condition. He stays at the disability center in town. Veer usually goes to meet him, but hasn't been there in a while. We didn't think it was necessary to tell your folks, so we kept it a secret."
"Oh, I understand. What's his name?"
"Rohit,"
Mai finally showed Suman the room where she would be staying and it looked quite simple compared to her room at home. "Do you like it?" asked Mai.
"Um, it's nice," she replied.
"Glad you like it! I have some things that need to be done; will you be willing to do them for me?"
Oh, great. Now I have to work for this old hag. I thought I was your daughter-in-law, not a maid!
"Sure," she said, even though she knew she wouldn't do the work since she never did household work before.
"Great! Here's the list. I'd like all of this to be done by tonight, if possible."
Thanks Mai. You just made my day.
Suman quickly got to work, but when she saw a maid nearby, she asked her to do the work. Veer noticed this from upstairs.
"Looks like Suman doesn't like doing house work. Let's see if I can get her caught today," Veer said to himself on the balcony. He quickly came downstairs and stood behind her.
"Hey! You missed a spot!" Suman shouted at her, pointing to the spot that she missed. If you don't do the work properly, I will get you fired. You got that, lady? I'm the daughter-in-law of this house!"
"Ugh, what kind of girl did Madam Nandini get as her daughter-in-law? She's so stubborn and mean. She was always talking about getting some nice sweet girl, but this girl is a devil!" she murmured to herself.
"What did you say? Suman asked angrily, pressing her teeth together.
"Nothing Ma'm. Just doing my work."
"Hey Suman. You sure like to work, don't you?"
Suman got a sudden shock when she heard Veer's voice. She quickly turned around and saw his sarcastic face.
"Yeah, I do," she lied, even though Veer knew it wasn't true.
"If you do, why are you making that maid do the work?"
"Because she was willing to help me," she lied again.
"It didn't seem like it. I saw what you did from upstairs."
Mai came outside and noticed Veer arguing with Suman. She immediately came and interrupted.
"Veer, quit picking on her! Just let her do what she wants," Mai argued. "She must be tired from doing all that work."
"Tired!? She was only working for five minutes!" Veer complained. "Why are you always taking her side, Mai? Can't you see she's not going to help you with anything? She's the complete opposite of Rashmi. I'm warning you Mai, she's not a good person. I suggest you make her leave right now, otherwise, she'll do something to our family that will ruin our reputation."
"Veer, how can you say such things to this poor girl? She got kicked out of her own home, at least let her be welcome here! You need to cool down. You're such a hot-head."
"Fine, be that way. But when something bad happens and it's Suman's fault, then you won't be able to forgive yourself," he said in an angry tone. He looked angrily at both of them and left.
"Don't mind Veer, sweetie. His temper will cut down once he gets to know you better. Trust me, he will have to accept you one day and he'll have to forget about that maid's daughter."
Chapter 32: The Message
It was already a week after the Joraa. Veer still wasn't satisfied with Suman staying at his place. He would still put all his anger on her and make her feel guilty. She tried many ways to make him forget Rashmi, but they would all fail. She promised herself that she will never stop making him forget Rashmi until the day he loves her.
Meanwhile, Rashmi was in her bedroom with her phone in her hand. She decided that she wanted to meet Veer to make him understand that they couldn't be together anymore. She grabbed her phone and started typing her message:
Subject: i have to meet you
Message:
Veer, I'd rly like 2 meet u sometime this week. Can we meet @ the park this Saturday? I rly needa tell u something. See ya!
-Rashmi
Just as she sent her message, Ammo walked into her room. She saw her daughter looking worried. She could tell that she was tensed about something. She wanted to know what Rashmi was up to.
"Who did you text Rasham?" she asked.
Rashmi turned around and looked at Ammo innocently.
"Veer," she answered. "I text-messaged Veer."
"Why? Don't you know that Suman..." she cut off dangerously.
"I know, Ammo. I text-messaged him because I need to make him understand that we can't be together anymore. He still thinks that there is a way we can be together. Please, just let me meet him once."
"Okay, but be careful. We don't want Suman to find out about this."
"Don't worry Ammo. Nothing will happen and she won't find out!" she reassured her as she put her hands on her shoulders.
Rashmi's phone started to beep. She received a reply from him:
RE: i have to meet you
Message:
Rasham, I miss u sooo much! I h8 being with ur friend! she doesn't do anything 4 Mai but Mai says it's ok. Sure, let's meet each other @ the park on Saturday. Luv u.
-Veer
"What was that?" exclaimed Ammo.
"I got a message from Veer. He says he'll meet me."
I really hope Veer will understand after I talk to him. I need to make him understand that I was helpless.
At that time I could only think about Suman, not me. If I had my Joraa with him, then only God would know what Suman could have done, Rashmi thought to herself.
Chapter 33: Breaking Apart
It was finally Saturday, the day of the rendezvous between Rashmi and Veer. They both were trying to find each other on the opposite sides of a bridge that was over a stream. When they spotted each other, they ran up to each other on the bridge and embraced.
"Why did you do this to me, Rashmi? I miss you so much! I can't live the rest of my live without you. I don't want to spend my life with Suman!" Veer said to her, sobbing in her arms.
Rashmi grabbed Veer's arms and pushed them back towards him. She looked at him in a serious way with innocent eyes.
"That's what I'm here to talk to you about. We can't be together anymore, Veer. You had your Joraa with Suman, not me. If people see us together, they will get a bad impression of you by the fact that you had your Joraa with Suman, but only liked me. They'll start calling you a womanizer!"
"No they won't! That happened by mistake Rashmi! That wasn't meant to happen! I had no idea that was her! If I knew, none of this would've happened. She betrayed me and now wants me back. I can't accept this betrayal as a fulfilled Joraa!" Veer shouted at her, bringing out all his guilt.
"Veer, you need to forget me, and I need to forget you! There's nothing we can do to fix this matter! You have to accept Suman now."
"What are you saying? Don't you love me?"
Rashmi was feeling very sorry after hearing this. She didn't want to hurt his feelings but she had to tell the truth.
"I'm sorry, but how can I love you now? How do you expect me to even think about you, especially after all of this? Veer, please, I request you to accept my advice: It really is time for us to break apart. I'm sorry, but it has to be this way now."
Rashmi slowly turned away from Veer while shedding a couple tears, and ran. Veer continued shouting her name, but she did not stop.
"I have to get Rasham back. No matter how long it takes or how much we have to suffer."
