@Amara sir, these people are the same people who praise Singapore to the skies and say it is so clean, and then throw their cigarettes out of the window! These are the same people who have littered the area around the Taj Mahal, our national treasure, where our bags are searched thoroughly before we enter and where my bag of candy, bought for my cousin's sons, whom I was going to visit on the return journey from the Taj, was confiscated! These are the same people who talk only in English to their children, and take pride in announcing that they have never studied Tamil or Kannada or Telugu. These are the same people who say that they don't like to mingle with other Tamilians because they come up with Tamil jokes and, this is really the best, they are too middle class! This was actually said to me by someone whom I was trying to invite to my house for dinner! As you may have guessed it, that was the last time I called her, and the last time I willingly spoke to her.

For the next two years, this same person used to come up to me whenever we met at someone's house (North Indian!) or at the grocery store, and tried to start a conversation, and my husband used to sit back and watch me replying in one word answers. Luckily, we don't seem to run into each other any more, probably because I don't go out so much these days!

When will we learn to take pride in our national identity? I still get that thrill (grass itching, in Roja's language, or pullarippu) when the plane lands in Chennai and I close my eyes and let the sound of Tamil being spoken everywhere wash around me. My only regret is that my parents are no longer there to greet me, because my father lives in the US with me, and does not travel.

@Amara sir and Srima, now you have me in tears! I am so grateful for this IF family which has brought me so much pleasure and so much love. I am definitely looking forward to my next trip to India, so that I can have the pleasure of meeting my virtual family in person. Amara sir, when I come there, I want to listen to your kavidhaigal.

Roja is aghast - the lethargy of the Indian bureaucrats is appalling !!!
The positive side??? They are very pleasant - "we are the customs
departmment and so we can throw you around" attitude is gone !!!
Finally Roja gets to see her goods today - moving them home either
this evening or tomorrow morning seems a possibility - habbbaaaa.

And Roja is sad - lost a good friend yesterday morning - a colleague
of Mr.Roja , a good friend , one of God's good men - know the family
for over 25 years now. The funeral is this morning at Madras . Would
have flown to be near the family but for this customs clearance - we both
are needed here. Mr.Roja is devastated - never seen him so depressed.
Roja could not sleep last night - the week end dinners at all possible
Singapore restaurants, the week ends spent at Roja's house , the laughter -
every thing flashed in front of her eyes like some movie -
May his soul rest in peace.

@Roja, my heart goes out to you and Mr. R. A good friend is like a treasure and losing a good friend causes more pain than losing treasure. We too suffered such a loss many years back when my husband lost his friend from his schooldays, the first of his friends whom I had the pleasure of meeting after we got married. He was only 42, and we had been in the habit of visiting each other twice every year. The devastation on my hubby's face is still vivid in my memory, and so I can well understand the pain you both are suffering at this moment. Words cannot lessen your grief at this time, and I can only pray that you find solace in the memory of the good times you had together and the good friendship that you were privileged to enjoy over the years. May God give you both strength at this time.
