Twilight, a series by Stephanie Meyers which recently rose to success, is highly highly inappropriate for children 12 and younger. As a school teacher, I see lots of my students reading Twilight and become infatuated with it, and it's disturbing me.
One major thing that is a concerning matter for me is the bedroom scene in the first book. People think that scene is romantic, but in fact, it encourages lusty behavior among others. These books claim to be pro-abstinence, and that may be true, but it certainly encourages people to have perverted thoughts. I especially think it's horrible how it's the hero himself who does this. I don't find it romantic at all, but perverted. I am probably the only one who thinks this, but personally, I can't wait until this nonsense dies down.

I'm really surprised with this author. Lusty and perverted? Well, either the author hasn't read such books 😛 or they haven't read Twilight. The book is far from lusty and perverted. Especially the bedroom scene would be described as cute by many! And we ain't all fools! 😛

For being in a Teacher's position, I understand your concern

However let me tell you, I am 16 years and a CRAZY Twilight addict, but I am also a Muslm girl who follows her religion properly
I wear Hijab, I don't date, I don't watch perverted movies
However Twilight did not seem perverted to me from ANY angle
This was one of THE most purest stories I have ever read!
The immortal love, the ability of Edward to CONTROL himself so he won't hurt Bella, and also Bella's attachement towards Edward even after he left her proves that this is no ordinary love 😳
Also, you have to take in the fact that Edward is a VAMPIRE, an immortal VAMPIRE who has been living for 110 years!
He's not just some 17 year old hormonal guy who just wants to have a one night stand with Bella!
He really LOVES her, he cares so much for her safety, he is soo LOYAL! 😳
I also liked the fact that Bella's character was NORMAL
she did mistakes, she had feelings for both Edward and Jacob, but eventually she knew that Edward IS her REAL soulmate
As for teenagers lusting around, I really think THAT is the parent's responsibility to control their child's behavior
Even the teen's have to understand that this IS A DIFFERENT love story
Girls have to understand that in real life most 17 year guys are just hormonal and are in for the physical pleasures unlike Edward!
Even I am waiting for my true love, my true PRINCE, but I know I will have to wait, and he will definately not be 17, because in REAL life, at that age, guys are NOT committed
In conclusion, I would say that since you are a Teacher, YOU should talk it ot with your students!
Try to confide them in a friendly manner! Me being a student I know how comfortable I feel when some of my Teacher's actually LET me talk about my feelngs!
and if my feelings were irrational they would EXPLAIN it to me! I loved that!
Again, I live in the USA, where a Teacher-Student relationship is different
I lived in India until 6th grade and I know that the Teacher-Student relationship there is different
But I will still advice you to talk it out with your students, it really does pay off trust me 😊

As what Meena said, is all right. As you are a teacher, we understand your concern.
I am 16 as well and a crazy obsessed reader of Twilight. While reading it, I didnt get the slightest hush of lust in the entire book, especially Twilight since you mentioned the first book. Breaking Dawn might have, but I am not very sure as I have yet to read it. But from what I heard so far, Breaking Dawn nor none of the books have such parts showing that is it too inappropriate for any reader.
The only one thing bothers me is that why is Twilight and the entire Saga is being catagorised at the Children's/Kid's section? It is meant to be for teens mainly above 13 years old, why is it tagged along as for the Kid's section? Well that's another issue.
Thirdly, I doubt whether you have read the book carefully. If you read it, can you find it any point that shows Edward is being a pervert? I would say a BIG NO! I dont wanna sound rude, but pls try reading the book again and try to see that what kind of romance occured in Twilight.
Since you are a teacher, I know how it feels if students tend to read such stuff especially at this young age. Try talking to your students. It isnt hard to talk openly to students as I have very good relations with all my teachers.

I agree to both meena and Mona. If you have read the book then Im sure you wouldn't have termed the book as "inappropriate". Its a divine lovestory, the unconditional love between someone who is immortal and someone who is mortal and very much like a 17 yr old. Stephenie had nicely captured the blooming love within a 17 yr girl, for a vampire who is 107. Knowing that his love could be harmful for the human girl, he decides to leave her, for her own safety, will you call it "inappropriate"? Although he is a vampire, though he has all supernatural powers he wishes he was a human like her, he wished he could dream and that his heart too could beat like hers. Please don't see the kiss or the bed scene as vulgarity, he was trying to experience how it felt to be that close to someone, how it felt to be loved. Even in Sanjay leela bansali's Black, Big B kissed the blind Rani to give her the feeling of how it felt when you kiss someone, now can we say he was a pervert? Definitely Not. Just try to see the love between EB which is very pure and divine.
Its a beautiful book.
Most importantly this is no kid show, its mentioned that the movie is for people above 13, the writer of the book is a mother of 3 herself, she has definitely taken necessary measures before publicizing the book. Its no harm if children are reading the book, but if they are bringing the fiction to reality then its definitely not right, as a teacher you could just have a friendly talk to your students, to make them realize that its only a book, you could say a beautiful fairy tale.

Twilight is not inappropriate at all it's beautiful. It does not encourage any type of behaviour and it is not perverted. You have to trust that people will be sensible when it comes to thing that they read, because as much as I LOVE Twilight i am not about to try to get crushed by a van so Edward comes and saves me.
Twilight is romantic and cute, it shows love in its truest form which is why it is appreciated by ALMOST everyone who reads it.

I'm not trying to insult or offend any Twilight fans. I'm just concerned that so many children under the age of 12 are reading it. I agree that once you are 13 or older, you pretty much know what's right and wrong, and what the code of conduct is. Most 13 or older kids know what to believe and what not to believe in books, but lots of 12 and younger tend to believe nearly everything in books, and if they especially love one book, they tend to think everything in it is "holy" or something. Between 8-12 years is where the foundation for human growth is especially important. One must be very careful about what kind of ideals they create in that age, and I don't think Twilight is very appropriate for chidlren in that age group.
The thing that concerns me most is the bedroom scene in Twilight. While many may think this is a sweet and romantic scene, it's not very good for a child under 12. I don't blame Stephanie Meyers for this, because she was clearly aiming the book for young adults, but why is the book being categorized under children's books in the book store? I think something should be done about that and the Twilight series should be moved to the Young Adults section. That's my main concern. I know older kids know how to understand the message in books, but many younger kids don't. And they may take the message in Twilight the wrong way.
Other than this, I didn't mean to offend Twilight fans, and if I did, I'm sorry. I'm just concerned.

I do agree you should not read this book if you are 12 years or younder...it odes give wrong idea if you are not mature enough...I understand as a teacher that it would be hard to deal with younger kids reading twilight and talking about it.....but its a very interssing thing you said lusty and perverted...i do think that Edwrad stalking Bella and comming to her room every night was slighty perverted!
