Car ripped through the countryside breeze that was cool yet warm. He told himself that the warmth must be from within him for having come home. Sarthak's lips carved a content smile. There are many reasons for that smile. Usually the beautiful village, the naivity from its rustic look, innocent and unassuming people, the narrow roads parting the greens on either side, the beautiful marathi ladies with beaming smiles, the collaged damp and dry soil smell, birds and chirps, and so on were reasons; but this time around, there is more to everything else. Sarthak's eyes softended with emotions. He reminisced the recent events. Past month had been traumatic after hearing about the agonizing events in Malhar's life. The news about Malhar plunging into another marriage right at the heel of the former one ending was no less torment. He wanted to know how was Malhar coping and what was happening with him but also felt that he needs to give him time to sort things out. After mustering some strength to confront the reality, he felt it's time to set off to Aurangabad to meet Malhar and to reassure him that he is not alone. At the outset of that drive, he had mixed feelings about what he might get to see when he meets Malhar. The wrangling thoughts the other day led him to almost ram into Anupriya's cycle. That was a horrific moment. Goodness gracious! That was facing death in the eye. Who would believe if he said that he just about saved himself by saving Anupriya? Did he feel relieved that day? Of course, he did, in the least. But, well, that would be an understatement for him.
There she was, on the road, just fallen off the bicycle. Wasn't he crazy to think often that he was losing her in his memory so much that he might even forget to recognize her at one point? Must have been kidding himself. Fair and flawless face with a neatly combed hair tucked into a tight bun, small black bindi, small earrings, and a dainty figure draped in a old-fashioned saree, but elegant, graceful, and commanding respect as always as he had seen and remembered her to be.
With his heart in his mouth, he just could not for a moment realize what was going on. Her knotted brows and the motion of her lips depicting the mild cries out of pain and shock gave his senses the needed rap and he leapt out the car. If Anupriya was not the unexpected shocking yet sweet surprise, he had one more awaiting in the form of a sweet-hot lovable small atom bomb in the form of a child-woman Kalyani aka Mrs. Singham. Good God, did I lament with you over Malhar and his present life? Forgive me. I take back all my complaints and worries.
What was in for him that day? He laughed out loud now. He shook his head as he remembered that day. He marked the day as yet another start of the journey of his beautiful life. He just knew it!
Thoughts trailed back to Anupriya. Walking the cycle alongside, she was walking gracefully. Her silhoutte with the bright light from sunset, she looked ethreal. One edge of the pallu is as usual in the right hand and stretched until the right handle bar. Other edge of the pallu swaying in the breeze and dancing to the tune of her hips as she walked. Left hand on the left bar, she was walking gracefully by pushing the cycle. There was a handbag hanging on the handle bar. There were flat sandals in her feet. Oh, no, is it his eyes tricking him? Not again! He sighed and told himself that he must stop thinking too much about Anupriya. She cannot be here on the isolated road, walking and that too with a cycle alongside. Ridiculous. He shook his head hard and blinked hard to shut her away. When he opened his eyes, there she was and getting closer now. Sarthak narrowed his eyes and looked carefully now. There it is. The flat bicycle tyre. So, it is Her! His heart missed a few beats, or so he thought.
He slowed his car and let the wheels roll a few meters ahead and nodded his head and pulled the car to the side of the road and got out. Walked at a quick pace and caught up quickly with Anupriya but pulled on his track as he thought he might startle her if he just approached her from behind. He took his phone out and opened the phone audio and browsed to the one that Kalyani uses and played the tune with a mild volume and swallowing the distance between him and Anypriya slowly. Hearing Kalyani's ringtone, "Kalyaaannii... " said Anupriya with a glee and turned around and stopped with her mouth ajar.
"Sarthakji... I mean, Sir, I mean.. I am sorry.. I thought it was Kalyani. How come you..." she trailed off in confusion.
"It's OK Anupriyaji. I was coming by this way and saw you walking alone. In order not to frighten you, I thought I will approach you with some familiarity. I hope you did not mind." He said smiling and added, "You can call me Sarthak... I mean Sarthakji as before, if you prefer. As I am an ardent student and not teacher outside the campus, who loves to learn from everyone, especially from achievers like you," and completed in all earnesty.
Anupriya blushed slightly and acknowledged, "you started your magic of making people feel special about themselves, as always. I know that trick of yours, have seen that in the past." She looked at him smiled.
"No. It is no trick. I mean it for you. I was a bit sceptical when I was on my way here about what and how of everything, like Malhar, the kid, you and everyone. But to be truthful, I was worked up for nothing, I must say. You were, er you all are unbelievable. Sorted things in a way like nothing happened. In fact, if you ask me things have gone better than before. I have to appreciate that. And your daughter Kalyani, that kid is something! You and your daughter are .. you know what, at times, I go short of words, but lemme tell you that this is one such occasion when I really don't feel bad that I am handicapped for words," he said softly and showed his appreciation of her new mother status.
He did not miss the light that lit her eyes and the pride as he mentioned Kalyani as her daughter. She laughed and said, "Haan, there is no word to describe my daughter. After all, she is special." and chuckled happily.
"You are too. I mean, um, you are special too, else do you think a magical mother-daughter love story can spring out of nowhere, if not for these two special beings?" he laughed and she joined him too.
The cool evening breeze with their laughter echoeing sprung the street light on. With the light lit up along their path, they walked side by side.
They walked in silence for the next few minutes with just smile on their faces and their own thoughts for company. Sarthak slowly turned to her side and took her happy face in. When her eyes met his, he said, "May I?" and she gracefully moved back and gave the cycle to him to push.
They took steps towards their new journey!
