Soap queen's reign ends |
By A.L. Chougule |
![]() After creating waves in tellydom and churning out one hit serial after the other for eight years, Ekta Kapoor's fortune wheel has taken a downward turn. Riding on the success of Kyunki, Kahani, Kasauti and a host of other 'K' shows, she ruled the roost on TRP charts with three or four Balaji serials consistently figuring in the top five GE shows. Today it is either one show or none. In fact, after Kasauti, Kahani and Kyunki shut shop, hardly anyone is talking about Balaji shows. It may not be the end of Balaji era but the road ahead for the soap queen and her production company seems to be tough. Currently Balaji has five shows on air, four on Star Plus and one on Zee. But except Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil which averages around 4 TRP and Kasamh Se, which is managing to stay afloat with an average of around 2.5 rating, other Balaji shows like Karam Apna Apna, Tujh Sangh Preet Lagai Sajna and Kayamath are struggling for TRPs. Ekta's foray into mythology with Kahani Hamarey Mahabharat Ki has been a disaster. Her other shows on 9X ' Kahe Na Kahe and Kya Dil Mein Hai ' didn't create any magic. Also, Ekta's recent entry into reality TV space with shows like Kaun Jeetega Bollywood Ka Ticket and Kabhi Kabhi Pyar Kabhi Kabhi Yaar were complete duds. Not long go Balaji shows were offered huge premium over shows of other production companies. So why is the most prestigious television banner suddenly in a precarious situation? "Renaissance in Indian cinema is offering novelty, variety and quality entertainment to people and that is rubbing into their expectations from television content as well. Television content providers must understand the need of the hour and deliver to survive and succeed," says Sony's assistant vice president and head of marketing Danish Khan, adding further, "People have not rejected a particular banner but a certain kind of content." Purnendu Shekhar who is currently writing Saath Phere, Balika Vadhu and Grihasti scripts says people are rejecting Balaji shows because the days of illogical stories and characters are over. "People are fed up of watching only black and white characters of heightened drama," he adds. However, according to a senior Balaji programming executive, some of the serials that are not doing well are old shows. "Karam, Kayamath and Kasamh Se are more than two-year-old shows. Certainly the trend is changing but Kish Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil, which is less than a year old is getting good response. Tujh Sangh Preet has just started and is picking up now," he defends. Producer-director Rajan Shahi of Bidaai avoids commenting on Balaji's poor performance. He says, "It's not fair to comment on a particular banner. But fact is that every show has its time span. Some of the Balaji shows have been hugely successful. But it's not easy to do four or five quality shows simultaneously. It takes at least nine months of intensive monitoring to set up a new show and to deliver certain content and quality," he adds. That's precisely the problem with Balaji today. According to the industry buzz, the soap queen who used to work 18 hours a day on her shows once upon a time is not giving enough time to television anymore. Indiscipline which was once unacceptable on Balaji sets is today an order of the day. Actors don't come on time and often lot of shoots take place with body-doubles. Also, there is no control over quality. "With Ekta shifting her attention to films, the television department is working in a chaotic manner and nobody is checking the content before it goes on air," says a TV industry senior. However, all is not lost. The senior Balaji programming executive reveals that the new shows, which will be launched this year will be in sync with the changing trend. But he admits that the TRP game is going to be difficult for everyone. http://www.deccanchronicle.com/TV%20Guide/TV%20GuideDescription.asp#Soap%20queen%E2%80%99s%20reign%20ends |
No press, parties and public functions, only confidential work that too with her handpicked team members. This self imposed exclusion from the limelight is not a calculated move to buy time and television space. In fact her astrologer has suggested that being in exile at least from the media glare, is expected to be beneficial for her stars. A source close to the TV tycoon says, "Ekta's family astrologer Janardhan advises Ekta and her family on all personal and business matters. Ekta always listens to Janardhanji. So far she hasn't made any move against his advice and sees no reason to disobey him this time too. Going by his words, she will keep away from the limelight especially the media for the stipulated time." Meanwhile, Balaji Telefilms has undergone a major shakeup. "For a long time Ekta was working with people who she thought could be trusted to carry the company forward. Many of them have let her down. She has now relieved many top-rankers of their duties and brought in key people and hopes to make the company's plans, procedures and vision more participative and collaborative. Appointing a new CEO, who replaced her uncle Ramesh Sippy, was a big step towards putting Balaji Telefilms back on its feet. At the moment she's planning three films and two new TV shows and yet keeping quiet about it," says the source. As for the much discussed feud with Star, she still has shows on the channel. "In fact some of her serials on the channel like Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil and Tujh Sang Preet Lagai are doing very well. She may soon do another new show for them. Far from licking her wounds Ekta is planning a major fund of films and serials in 2009-2010." When we tried to contact Ekta, it seemed that she had already begun to follow her astrologer's advice on keeping her maun vrat. So it's no talking for Ekta, not, at least, till Janardhanji waves the green flag. |

Star scraps three shows produced by Balaji
Mumbai: Broadcast network Star Group Ltd, which exited a joint venture with Balaji Telefilms Ltd and is looking to sell its 25.99% stake in the television production house, has now decided to scrap three soap operas being produced for it by Balaji.
"We have already informed Balaji Telefilms that we would no longer be telecasting shows Kayamath, Karam Apnaa Apnaa and Kasturi. This decision has been taken because the shows are bad in content and have not been faring well in ratings and the production house has been very unresponsive to changes suggested by the channel. The shows will be terminated by end March," said an executive at Star familiar with the matter, who did not wish to be identified.
Balaji's founder Jeetendra Kapoor, a Bollywood actor, said he wasn't aware of the development.
Two other Balaji shows on Star, Tujh Sang Preet Lagai Sajna and Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil, may be scrapped as well, added the Star executive.
Television and media industry executives familiar with the matter say the loss of Star business on the five serials could erode Balaji's revenue significantly.
Mint couldn't independently ascertain how much these shows contributed to Balaji's revenue.
The top-rated show among the five in January was Karam Apnaa Apnaa, with a 1.2 viewership rating, according to media agency Mediaedge: cia, part of GroupM India Pvt. Ltd. Comparable numbers for the top-rated programme weren't immediately available but in 2008, the top show on general entertainment channels boasted ratings of around 8.
Balaji ended 2007-08 with a revenue of Rs328.97 crore and a net profit of Rs81.26 crore. It ended the first six months of 2008-09 with a revenue of Rs194.93 crore and a net profit of Rs40.38 crore.
Shares of Balaji ended trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Tuesday at Rs39 each. The shares are 82.89% off their 52-week high of Rs228.
Balaji Telefilms rose into prominence with shows such as Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, which ran on Star Plus and became top-rated shows at the time.
In 2004, Star bought a 25.99% stake in the company. Last year, the network offered Balaji promoters an option to buy back these shares. Star and Balaji had also announced a joint venture in April 2007 to launch regional language entertainment channels. The venture fell apart last year.
Mint has previously reported that Balaji is now talking to a consortium of investors to buy Star's stake. "At the moment, there is no development on the stake matter," said the Star executive.
An executive from a rival production house says the scrapping of the shows will hit Balaji hard. "Their main problem is that they were relying too much on Star. They have very few shows running on the other channels. Channels have been delaying payments to them and even shows on NDTV Imagine such as Bandini are not performing very well for them in ratings."
Balaji will have to rethink strategy on programming, added the executive at the rival production house.
Mediaedge:cia India managing director Shubha George said that the general entertainment space is becoming extremely competitive and that the GEC (general entertainment channel) space has lost at least 8% in viewership (in gross rating points, which is sum of viewership rating points over a set period) last year.
"Star's shows have not been doing exceedingly well, but they've not been doing badly either. I think it's a case of too much fragmentation in the general entertainment space. Players are almost neck-to-neck with each other."
