Part 4
Uma closed the book shut, he had read the same line for the fourth time, he was losing concentration... reading wasn't helping him take his mind off that girl, scarecrow. His anxiety was lurking at the edge, ready to overpower him the moment he gave it a chance. His whole existence had turned upside down since yesterday, yet he was under control but today was a different story, her words "are you a doctor" were running through his mind in a loop. They all were ungrateful creatures, a whole species tempered this way, being out of place, imposing yet ungrateful to things done in their favor. He got up placed the book back on the shelf and he caught his reflection in the mirror, he could be better than this, all this was awkward but he wouldn't get affected by her, she was nobody to him, just a scarecrow.
He knocked and entered the room to find her sleeping, her face looked better, the bandage needed to be changed... he stood there for a few seconds and turned to leave when she called out from behind - the devil was awake on time. Uma stopped but didn't turn, "these bandages are getting itchy" she said, not wanting to say something to offend him more, she went straight to the point. He stood rooted to the spot, how would he change bandage now, she was awake, he thought. He took in a deep breath and put all his focus to the task. He pulled out the medical supplies and got to work. He freed her hand as they were healed already. But the minute scars remained. Next was her head, there was no need to tie it up anymore, it was set free with a small bandage. He moved towards her feet, her eyes following each of his movements, his fingers barely touched her, but it was near enough to give her goosebumps. While he changed the bandage on her feet, replacing the old one, her eyes were stuck on him... he couldn't take her gaze a second longer, "it's weird to stare at a stranger" he said to break her out of her trance of ogling him..."stranger is mummifying my feet again" she quipped back. So that's what she thought of the dressing, it was neat and proper, she should check her reflection that would be a real mummy, Uma thought to himself. He worked with such precision, his eyes fixed to the feet he worked on, his face held no expressions just hardened focus. His coal black eyes didn't roam around, they were fixated on the movements of his own hands. His jaw was tight, that face could give a run to all the runway models, Kanak thought to herself observing him intently.
Uma placed the food on the table with medicine, and turned to leave when she asked "who are you?" He could only reply "doctor"..."where am I?" She questioned "my house" he replied. A silent dread crept over Kanak, her chill ran down her spine, her thoughts went haywire with all the worst case scenario she could ever imagine... she managed a final question "am I your prisoner?" .. Uma turned around enough to glare at her, his eyes glowered upon her, he was offended, Uma made a mental checklist, woman could always imagine the worst of men... "no" he said through his teeth and banged the door on his way out. Kanak faceplamed herself on being stupid and asking weird questions... she should focus on herself so that she could leave from whatever place she was at. She looked at the door apologetically, it was because of her it was being treated with bangs again n again.
Kanak saw the fading light from the window, she had been in that room all day, sitting in one place, that was a miracle, for she could never be content at one place, she was like the honey bee who fluttered from flower to flower to enjoy everything nature had to offer. Kanak put her feet on the ground, she wanted to see the sunset, she couldn't walk or stand properly, she dragged herself to the window, agitating the feet more. Despite the pressure she decided to stand, she wouldn't be tied down to one place. She had to keep moving, keep running.
She watched the orange hue, melting into blue over the horizon, she looked at the garden below, the leaves danced in the subtle breeze and flames burned in the lamps as a man, the doctor as she knew him lit the pathway to the house from the garden. She remembered tumbling through leaves and bushes before passing out and waking up in the middle of the night in the room. She saw the doctor disappear in the distance. Darkness engulfed him, his lit torch dotting his movement, He was an enigma, for even when he was in the room, he seemed to be miles away,.. but she wouldn't bother him again. She turned back and gathered all courage to hop to the bed on her toes.
To be continued...
