We've been going in circles in the same topic and one excuse I keep seeing is God gave him signals.

So lets look at this matter from another angle (hopefully).

Is it okay to commit attrocities in the name of Dharam/Religion? is it okay to attack someone's body autonomy in the name of Dharam? Should we overlook Kanaks wants and wishes and her happiness because of Umas beliefs?

Most importantly why are we treating Uma and Uma's beliefs as two seperate entities? Currently there's no Uma without Dharam.

So God gave him signals and he followed it? So why do people put the whole blame on Uma's Dharams rather than Uma himself, why excuse him from what he has done and till this date he seems to feel no remorse for it.

A lot of us believe in God in general but God's signals are so not so clear nor straightforward nor conditional.

God gave signals Uma-Kanak were meant to be, but that doesn't mean they're meant to be together right this instance in a non-consesual way. God gave no time constraint so when Uma read these signals and chose to force her instead of woo her like most people

Is it fair to blame God on his actions?

Man is fallible.

To be religious is a choice...but when you use your religion as a weapon against unsuspecting people and over-ride their body autonomy and their consent/choices, thats a whole different thing.

Why are some people saying Uma is not at fault, it's just Gods signals and his Dharam? Uma is a product of his Dharams and it's Uma that committed the act not God.

People kill/terrorise in the name of God, doesn't make it anymore right or excusable. It's the mans actions not Gods will, Gods will itself is not a clear cut thing that can be read or understood easily.

Very well put.Uma committed a crime when he married Kanak against her will plain and simple. He had every intention of going ahead with Suhaag raat also until the priest told him that shuddikaran had to be done. He is not shown to be just a simple god fearing man. He has been shown to use force to threaten and subjugegate people to follow his rules of dharma. Maasisa herself said once that he is not as innocent as he looks. Yeah the signs from God were there but as you say, God never threatened him- Marry her today or else!,

As i remember, nobody said Uma or Kanak is not wrong at all.
Otherwise it's about accepting or not " mitigating circumstances" for each of them.. Some of us do it because of our beliefs, some because of the loveliness of the story.
We are not here to do justice, this will be done by the writers in their own manner, we have to be pacient. We all want Kanak and Uma to be together and love each other. If love gains, why is so important who was wrong first or who is wrong more?

Well said Ahlaam5 and Deebz.
I think when folks watch a work of fiction the tendency is to view characters from a subjective point of view as one gets to see the context in which they acted. However just because we can see why a character did what they did, doesn't necessarily mean their reasons were justified.

The natural reaction when one hears critique of a character or person one enjoys watching is to leap to their defense so I can see where that's coming from...

...However I think (hope) the point of TSMSP is blind faith/senseless ritualisation vs autonomy/independent thinking. If that is really the theme then it will be addressed over and over again till Uma Shankar as a character understands how his manner of thinking is misguided. So hopefully everyone is prepared for that...

And regarding the whole forced marriage. It's rare that a show directly addresses how this is a crime (https://seriousaboutserials.wordpress.com/2013/04/22/ek-chutki-sindoor/) so if TSMSP actually does that it will be very commendable.

Let's see where this goes...

@hindifan;

actually someone did say that Uma is not wrong because God gave him signals in one of the other threads.

Even that statement you wrote implies it...you're putting his religious views/beliefs under 'mitigating circumstances'

And thats the question I'm asking...why is his religious beliefs a mitigating circumstances? why is it an excuse?

I hope I don't sound attacky, I'm only debating the statement you wrote.

First, i was not talking about religious beliefs, didn't write that, but about beliefs=values.
Second, mitigating circumstance is not his religion but the fact he hadn't bad intentions, he didn't want to hurt her. Even his zeal was not his option, it's because he has been raised like that from his childhood. These are mitigating circumstances for his bad act.
Third. I just want a peaceful and beneficial medium on this forum, that's all.

Neither Dharam is an excuse for what Uma did..

Nor love for Bhabho is an excuse for what Kanak did..

They are trying to justify their actions using it

Umas character till now shown following same rules he sets for others
Like he said he will immolate himself when Kanak had escaped.

He still wants to be with her when he knows entire truth.

I think he should not be sad or angry if he is taken to jail if we think from his pov as he did what he thought to be right. Now law will do what's right accepted to it. If his faith is so strong he should not even feel fear/anger. He should not even get angry on Kanak. Let's see what they show.

If they show him getting angry due to jail mess which is his own it will not go with his character.

I didn't ask for his neutral reaction in alcohol incident as that was about his dharam which is core strength.

But jail I don't think any dharmic constraint is there. His purpose was marriage and Janam Janam ka saath which happened. Waiting for his reactions eagerly.

Dharm is the way off living...does it apply in today's world...yes but it's how we interpreted it...otherwise it becomes a extreme belief/ living...see US...
I think he just follows the rules...no thinking about it nor does he question it..He is a blind follower...
