TSMSPJ*ep: 50*30.5.17: My Impression .. to keep or lose one's faith?
Faith is belief in a deity, person or thing, or belief in another's ability. It's having reliance, showing assurance in set doctrines or a body of dogma. Faith can be personal and private, or shared with many. Many follow a faith, because they are born in it. Others follow a particular faith because they believe in the scriptures . Faith is to gain spiritual insight. To practice self discipline. It may be used as divine instruction and, to inculcate a code of moral guidance for living. There are those who follow faiths in the aspiration of receiving blessings and rewards. There are also those also who believe in punishment of sins and offering atonement of sins by penance. There those also, who seek solace and tranquillity for a troubled soul through their faith. To me, the episode is enriched with references to faith right from the start..
Maasi is one devote , so steeped in her religion that it makes her arrogant to the hilt. She is mercilessly judgemental . Anything to prove Uma righteousness! and Kanak unrighteousness .Maasi throughout the episode is like the propaganda machine churning out negativity towards Kanak, the runaway bride. She even questions the fairness of the gods for dishing out the punishment on the good! This contrasts with Uma's act of faith when he accepts that may be have misread the message of the deities in marrying Kanak hastily. He tries to give proof of his faith devotion, by submitting to the outcome of his wife leaving him. Uma does try to cover up his sentiments of losing faith, by public confession before his family.. god help him! he may have sinned by thinking of an unknown woman as his own...he further reinstates his act of faith by suggesting that he has left it to the gods!for her return.. but if Kanak fails to return, than he will become part of the sacred fire itself! Is this Uma Shankar's atonement ? his penance for the sin to covet a woman named Kanak? Maasi refuses to accept this drastic article of his faith.. sounds like a weak moment in one so strong in faith..
Kanak on the other hand is strengthened by the faith she is brought up ,the faith of her parents Suraj and Sandhya.. her faith is more on the lines of moving mountains by sheer belief in justice and truth. Her faith arms her with inspiring stories of Lord Rama and Sita. Intrepidly with the blessings of her dead parents and the reinforced belief in her belief ,she begins her journey back to Ladnun ,to face Uma the ravan in her story.. where she herself is Lord Ram and sita..and as the embodiment of both she goes to slay the ten headed monster Ravan who holds her Bhabo's papers captive in his dungeon! How Kanak wishes if only Bhabo and her family can have faith in her! that she is like Lord hanuman himself who flies to Lanka..ladnun! to free the papers! For Kanak its to restore Bhabo's faith in herself! Prove to the Rathi's that her mission to marry Uma is done in good faith!
Many are Kanak's fears in this return to Uma's house she is bound to be seen as one with bad faith in mind! In her journey the gods through the words of a fellow passenger... Kanak learns, that Sita was Lord Ram's integral strength , even though she ended up in Ravan's house.. she remained pure, due the self discipline brought upon the ten-headed monster ,by the deities themselves! But this Kanak knows that she will take it upon her faith, that Uma will accept her back into his house his life . The last thing she needs is to lose faith, by her wayward thoughts of films and things!
The atmosphere on the other hand is already under way for Kanak's arrival! Shiv reads something of great significance related to the properties of the term Kanak... his unintentional slip? is enough to gauge the reactions of the sober and disciplined Uma Shankar! Much to Maasi and Suman's annoyance Shiv wants to one more time wants to learn the meaning of the term Kanak. Is it true the word refers to turning insane?? without giving more than is required.. Uma teaches , the word has two meanings. One is gold is, and is good to have, but can make a person lose his head! The other meaning of the word is dhatura a kind of intoxicant, which makes a person lose his senses after consuming it. Shiv in all innocence, asks his older brother , which one is bhabisa, the gold or the intoxicant?? Uma prefers to pass the question, as others are present.. or perhaps It's too early to answer.. or conclude , that she will not return. To me he somehow hangs on to his faith.Uma as in being intoxicated by her memories now. As opposed to how he sensed her around him before marriage. Mind you.at least, to pin faith on her return is more positive than his contemplating his end!
Kanak may have left the Rathi's but she continues to hold the bond of sibling love and faith. Vansh returns from Ajmer and loses faith in the manner in Kanak is ousted out of the house! Ved's banning her entry! Vansh shows faith in his sister and loses faith with bhabho!! With Vansh back, there is show of good faith in his sister.. and he is likely to support her like babbsa in the family.
As part of faith practices, some acts may appear strange, and rituals hard to follow. Like when Saraswati asks Payal to drink the sacred cow's urine. The ritual startles her at first. But Uma, explains the medicinal purposes of the early morning drink. It is considered as being effective for cleansing of the digestive system , which keeps many illnesses a person is likely to suffer at bay.. Payal consumes it. Payal's compliance once again turns Maasi into a propaganda machine. She yet again in bad faith , tries to remind Uma how Kanak ruined his twenty five years of his strong article of faith.. shook his belief. If she returns she will have her guts for garters!..
Kanak's faith to fight for righteousness strengthens her on coming to threshold.. before she can cross over inside.. Shiv wide eyed calls out bhabhisa!.. Kanak chants, Lord Ram, Ram be my guide... as I yet again cross over Ravan's threshold..
Where Maasi ,Palomi ,Suman ,get the shock of their life! Uma takes the decision, she will cross the threshold.. and he takes her straight to their room? Massi in bad faith, is up to no good. She tells her accomplices , what Uma plans to do with Kanak ,who robbed them of peace, puzzles her.. she needs to know what Uma is thinking?? Maasi wants to see Uma lose his faith in this girl Kanak..Hamlet53 31.5.17
