The beach setting lends itself to the title I select. The crab is a flat crustacean with a broad shell atop a flat belly, with five pairs of legs. Of which, the two front legs end with grasping pincers. The crab is recognizable by its scurrying , sideways manner. Literally, crab expressions signify drifting off diagonally, especially when in tow. Within the episode , there are instances when characters in scenarios, are seen to have a crab mentality, that shows one as being negative ,selfish, not wishing to see others ahead of oneself or doing better.
Maasi currently is the crab she shuffles sideways before Uma as being one who walks straight. She is far from that, one having a crab mentality, blessing Uma's wedding ,yet not allowing him to move on. With Suman and Palomi as her pincer grips her aim is to squeeze the truth out of Kanak. There lies in her, I feel, a certain envy of Kanak's beauty , otherwise why else would she give such a stereotypical statement that beauty in a woman is a man's worst enemy , beauty over power his reason and good sense . Maasi is being consumed by the fear, that Kanak is as sly as the fox whilst Uma being simple is being duped by her. Sometimes she contradicts herself. Where on the one hand she paints him larger than life before Kanak. Before her pincers Suman and Palomi, she paints him a being gullible. Of course Maasi's pretty woman stance, is not set in stone as the same can be applied for a handsome man.. is Palomi not taken in by Uma's looks? In fact Maasi even refers to Palomi interest , as care. Rather deviously Maasi shows fearless dislike towards Kanak yet again, and shows preference towards Palomi, as she plays on Palomi's sincere devotion towards Uma.. Maasi trusts her, all because she wants the girl to do her dirty work for her, only Palomi declines spying for Maasi. Maasi is desperate!! to find the truth, the whole truth about Kanak! the door is locked! which means Maasi cannot get her hands on the contents of Kanak's pouch bag!! it's Kanak s mind she wants to pry into!
On the seashore, amid the ebb and flow of the waves, the golden sunshine ,and the sun kissed salty sea breeze, the newlywed couple roam the shore.Time whizzes past, Kanak has the impending task to render, phone Arvind. So immersed in love is Uma that he is duped by her coquettish feigned injury on her foot. His wife tumbles and trips and invokes a smile on his face. Maasis words apply ominously on this man besotted by the beauty of his wife. Kanak's half given the chance diagonally evades him, looks around with a contrasting attitude! Speaks in Malaylam to the wrong person!Uma! the last person she wants to borrow a phone from! What moments are these? that effortlessly weave magic between the two. Where, without obvious prying into each other's affairs , staggering truths about each other! just come to the surface! For once Kanak sets aside her goal and bursts into a gleeful giggle when he turns around and breaks into an impressive Malaylam gig! She finds herself being spun around! In step with him! So diverse from each other yet in syn! Uma serenades her in Malayalam.. which takes the sails from her boat! What magic is this? strangers to each other.What enchantment is this?that swamps, knowing the truth about him that he is a cheat and fraud! Still leaves room for learning new things about each other! Uma is in love, whilst Kanak spins around his mood. For Uma this is an arranged marriage! arranged by the gods! Uma has a lifetime of getting to know her! for Kanak this dance and song are all post forced marriage occurrences! that she takes in a stride to get to her goal! So typical of him to equate the coincidence of both knowing Malaylam despite not belonging to the area! as another sign from the gods to unite them ,to write a new love story about tale of the lamp and the wick. Uma woos her with gifts!only Kanak cannot give him the one gift he craves from her the gift of love! Heavens she muses , it's a good thing she didn't spill out the beans of the shop papers and the use of the phone! Uma enjoys talking about himself. Kanak though recedes a bit , this man is a jack of all trades! He has much more to him than meets the eye!! What's more he makes things sound so deep.. Kanak is cautious.. do still waters run deep with him? He doesn't seem to think so.. he's like an open book for her, wants her to know everything about him! Kanak swallows the lump in her throat, in word all sounds good marriage material! In fact he even allows her to ask anything she wishes about him.. He wouldn't hide anything.. but he respects her privacy.. wants her to ask for anything.. he is riddle , pleasant , yet despicable in how he married her! she wonders what game he must have played to get shop?
Kanak mocks silently perhaps he can share that truth with her, that matters most to her.. how he duped Bhabo's shop and pulled it as his asset? Uma also excels in the art of saying the right things, about hidden things, by putting the onus on one's conscience. Uma assures Kanak he will never endeavour to pry into issues she wishes to withhold from him! But Kanak is on the ball!, thus when he graciously allows her to ask him whatever she wants! Kanak seizes the chance, stares at the sea ,water! water! everywhere.. so she goes for water! Uma face falls with a thud! Pardon? Plain water? anything to get him away !so she can do the deed! Kanak has to walk sideways to pursue what she came to Kerala for!
At Rathi house too, there is their fair share of angst. Golu's wedding this time in the lurch due to proposition of living with his brides family. He is devastated enough to go off his food!! Ved's unspoken grief smarts and he shows bitterness for the girls side.. recalls his sincere offer to help Payal's family..his help was loudly denounced! Meenashki confers the brothers for a way out to get the smile back on her Golu's face... something that Vansh suggests in jest! Meenaskshi interprets it as a means of connecting her Golu with Hanuman lane ,if he as to live with his in laws ..trade in Golu.. sell the shop to Golu's father in law.. a sideways move..
If Kanak can swallow his profound words, getting access to a stranger's phone is a doddle. Being a helpless girl is of use to her!a kind stranger obliges and she gets through to her mate Arvind. He too states the obvious ask her cop brother Ved ,he can investigate about the shop. but Kanak does the sidewalk of a crab.. her dealing with shop fraud is a secret from her family.. but she manages to fix a time to meet him. Mission accomplished! To gets her jobs done Kanak shuffles along in every direction.
Nearly! till Palomi with the crab mentality descends on Kanak and catches the crux of the matter! Kanak on the phone to someone? she comes to Kerala with a purpose! A battle of word! A war of who lies and who speaks the truth! Palomi see's herself as having an upper hand on Kanak, threatens her, she's dare not harm Uma! Palomi even attempts to intimidate Kanak ,but letting her know that even Maasi has her suspicions about her.Palomi clearly believes that she has enough information on Kanak for her to be damned in Uma's eyes! But she is mistaken. When the matter comes in Uma Shankar's court, he can make out who the accuser is? and who the accused? Palomi begins the squabble she lies!! Uma challenges and rebukes Palomi for not interfering between husband and wife!
Uma is not amused asks Kanak, who holds her stance .. something he gave her allowance for! Kanak wishes to withhold her opinion on the matter! As she has no evidence to show she speaks the truth! Uma probably senses he's in a pickle he has made a rod for his back!! by telling her he wont pry! But he can see Palomi is putting his wife down! She is being mocked as a liar! We now get to see justice Uma Shankar's style ,the accused given the chance to prove her innocence! He too wants to prove his wife's innocence before the girl he offered refuge! For surely his wife holds more significance . Kanak has to been seen as his reflection.. one who speaks the truth like he does?
As it stands, its Palomi's word against Kanak's . His wife will take the test that he devises to walk past the crab riddled seashore into the frothy sea. The test by no means is easy , as many have fallen prey to crab bites! If she has naught to hide Kanak will venture forth fearless into the sea ! Palomi with her crab mentality, un willingly to let Kanak make headway with Uma Shankar dares her! Kanak takes up the dare! Not for Palomi the green eyed refugee ! not for Uma ,the Ravan who for some reason wants her to win? Or wants to punish her! from keeping things from him! She will do it for Bhabo's temple , the shop! she will get her toes bitten , to prove ,that fo her there are, no tears!no fears! no cowering , but just the one thing that gets her through the most challenging of moments.. the strength of whose daughter she is? Suraj and Sandhya..the lamp and the wick
Palomi is visibly hurt as she sees the strong figure of Uma cayying his wife Kanak protectively in the security of his arms! out of the sea of troubles! that Kanak faced. Uma cuts through the restless fury of the mighty sea! Uma and Kanak much to Palomi's dismay, emerge , as two souls emerge cleansed and washed with water, purified.. but do both Uma and Kanak come clean with each other? Kanak will not say much yet.. now that he has given her the comfort zone , he will not pry into her affairs .. he trusts her. Till then these two will be like two crabs drifting diagonally hamlet53 16.5.17
