No Jewel in her Crown

Bipasha Basu was dropped at the last minute from endorsing a jewellery brand because she has a sultry image and a dusky complexion

Bips wouldn't have thought that her dusky complexion and her sultry image will cost her an endorsement assignment. Karisma Kapoor has replaced her for 'unfair' reasons. The story goes that Bipasha Basu was singed as brand ambassador by a jewellery brand. However, the company realised that Bipasha did not fit the bill because of her dusky complexion and therefore did not represent the image of a 'family woman'. So they soon replaced her with the much-married and fair-skinned Karisma Kapoor.

Our well-placed source in the industry informed, "After clinching the deal with the jewellery company, Bipasha was informed that they were going to drop her and sign Karisma instead. Obviously, Bipasha was extremely disappointed and hurt."

When contacted, Khemchand Bhagnani (Vashu Bhagnani's brother whose wife is one of the partners in the jewellrey project with Pramod Rao, Pankaj Jagawar and Mukesh Jain) confirmed that they had chosen Kapoor. Khemchand said, "Lolo (as Karisma is fondly called in the industry) has been lucky for our family. She did my brother's first film Coolie No.1 for our banner Pooja Films and we have very good family equation with her. Moreover, Lolo is extremely professional and focused."

When asked if Basu was dropped because of her dusky complexion and her racy image, Bhagnani said that he would not like to get into the details.

However, a top official in charge of the jewellery brand (name withheld by request) confirmed the story, saying, "Yes, Basu was dropped at the last minute in favour of Kapoor. The company felt that Basu does not have a family image; she has a very sexy image and if she shoots a commercial for us, the families may not accept that." The ad with Kapoor was shot in a five-star restaurant in Powai last week.

The official added, "Besides, we visualised that the jewellery will not suit Basu because she has a dark complexion. We thought that we should choose either Karisma, Kareena or Katrina. Therefore, the change was incorporated."

So how did they rope in dusky siren Bips in the first place? The official explained, "We had engaged Percept Company to hunt for the model and they zeroed down on Bipasha. They were keen that we should go ahead with her. However, we thought otherwise. Hence, it took us some time to decide on the model that fit our specifications." Sorry Bips, it's truly not fair! Such biases, and that too towards someone as gorgeous as you! But is that what explains your schoolgirl haircut? Are you toning down that sexy image of yours for a jewel in the crown?

That's unfair for them to do that Bipasha, why approach her for the ad in the first place if they thought she was too sultry and had a dark complexion? Bipasha is a beautiful woman, and I think she would've done a good job modelling their jewellery but if that's how they feel Bipasha is better off not endorsing their jewellery

Discrimination based on skin color is bad. It is sad how someone gets dropped because of darker skin color just the same way when fairer people are branded as plastic and emotionless.

Well..Karishma does have a family image so she was more suitable for this brand for various reasons. I agree Karishma is way more beautiful than Bips...but this behavior is totally unprofessional. Anyhow, stuff like this happens in showbiz industry and bips is well aware if it and mature enough to handle it herself...guess she is better of w/out it !
