'Give Vajpayee Bharat Ratna'

NEW DELHI: Leader of the Opposition LK Advani has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding that Atal Bihari Vajpayee be given the Bharat Ratna, the nation's highest civilian award.

Question is:

Does Bharat Ratna hold its stature in today's context?

Has it been conferred on too many non-deserving people till date to lose its significance?

Does Mr. Vajpayee or for that matter any of the current political leaders deserve such an honor?

Who were some of the most deserving people who were never honored by the nation's highest civilian award?

I just went through the list of the Bharat Ratna recipients and to my shock, even Rajiv Gandhi got the award before Sardhar Vallabhai Patel ji....😲( Technically speaking same year, but since the list was in the alphabetical order Rajiv made it before Sardarji😕)

Here are a few observations:

1. Mahatma Gandhi never found a place in the list..😲

2.Subhash Chandra Bose was awarded in 1992 and then the award was taken back owing to the technical legalities as they failed to prove his 'death'🤢

3. Sardar ji and Rajiv Gandhi, both received the award in the same year 1991( It took our folks 35+ years to decide that Sardar ji was after all a Bharat Ratna)

4.Jaya Prakash Narayan, J.R.D Tata and so many other greats made it to the list only after the esteemed Gandhis and Nehru...

5.Even Nelson Mandela was better off as he was atleast awarded when he is still alive and lets not even get into how he was supposed to be "Bharat Ratna"(Bharat Ratna (translates to Jewel of India[1] or Gem of India[2] in English) is India's highest civilian award, awarded for the highest degrees of national service.)

My conclusions, all this is just humbug...I lost all my respect for the India's highest Civilian award, the moment I found Rajiv Gandhi's name before Sardarji and Jaya Prakash Narayan in the list...😳

Who cares whether they give the award to Vajpayee ji or even to Devegouda...

Question is:

Does Bharat Ratna hold its stature in today's context?

When a Bharat Ratna or any award is given there will always be three sides, one supporting , one opposing and one neutral.... It happens even to Voice of India title so It would not hold good to be judgmental about the selection of a person

Has it been conferred on too many non-deserving people till date to lose its significance?

Same answer as above.... its a very subjective issue and opinions differ a lot😊

Does Mr. Vajpayee or for that matter any of the current political leaders deserve such an honor?

If you consider Mr. Vajpeyee's contribution as only political leader then he is not deserving it... but Mr. Vajpeyee is much more than a politician.... He is a valued Author and Poet and has contributed to the society in different manners... However I would agree that there are many more deserving people on the earth😊 I would suggest name of Mr. Narayan murthy above anyone for the award....

Who were some of the most deserving people who were never honored by the nation's highest civilian award?

Jaya😆.... okk seriously though I thought the award shall be given to people who make us proud... Like out scientists in ISRO, or Mr. Narayan Murthy or Vishwanathan Anand.... people like that.... I dont mind giving Bharat Ratna to people who are contributing internationally... Just like a nobel... It will only raise the value of the title until and unless it goes to a social worker or someone who is really a ratna😊

He will never get the award 😆 but he is ratna in heart of every indian 😛

Sardarji did not have surname gandhi na😉

4.Jaya Prakash Narayan, J.R.D Tata and so many other greats made it to the list only after the esteemed Gandhis and Nehru...

thats why tata group ne esteem car banaya and then made it a flop noting that esteemed people were flop😆

I would not mind giving awards to outsiders until they are doing good to society and india is benefitted somehow.... like i would not mind giving award to someone who brings a breakthrough in global warming research, with which india can be benefitted😊

Raksha summed it up extremely well. There are several in that list who I think did not deserve to be there. I'll go through it later.

Raksha, very informative post and interesting observations.👏 But I agree with Kabhi that M Gandhi is unanimously deserving of every prestigious award out there hence it is non issue whether his name appears on the list or not.

Nelson Mandela should not be on the list . 😕 We might as well give award to America for "national service" of employing millions of Indians thru outsourcing . 😉

I absolutely agree with Mahatma Gandhi being above and beyond all these petty awards, and so are the other Freedom fighters...Its rather disheartening to find the names of the founding fathers of the Independent India after so many petty, undeserving and inconsequential people...

As much as I repsect Vajpayee ji, I don't see how his services are any award worthy, let alone Bharat Ratna...🤔

People like Mukhesh Ambani, Narayan Murthy who are a major hand in the rampant economic growth of the Young India are the deserving candidates for this supposedly 'Highest' Civilian award....

If we strictly go by the definition of 'Bharat Ratna', Nelson Mandela and Khan Abdul Ghaffer Khan (Frontier Gandhi)'s name seem unusual but I guess this award is similar to 'Knighthood' and awarded to these two for working closely with Indians (people of Indian origin) in different countries.

RSS wants Bharat Ratna for Bhagat Singh

The BJP's demand for Bharat Ratna for former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has found little favour with the RSS which has suggested that Bhagat Singh or the Indian soldier deserved the country's highest civilian honour.

An editorial in RSS weekly mouthpiece Panchajanya said "if one listens to ones heart, the two names that come up instantly to the mind are Shaheed Bhagat Singh and the Indian soldier".

Recalling that the country had only recently celebrated the birth centenary of Bhagat Singh, Panchajanya said, "Who could be the ideal for the youth than the great martyr."

It notes that India has the largest number of youth in the world and it will be a great move if the country honours its topmost youth idol with Bharat Ratna.

The editorial in the special Republic Day edition lavishes praise on Bhagat Singh and regretted that the revolutionary could not get the honour so far as "successive governments lists included only secular people"

Maintaining that the Indian soldier was the second rightful claimant for the highest honour, the editorial said that "it was he who has done the country proud by always bringing it victory by putting his life in danger".

"He never asks anything and always gives. With a brave heart he guards the motherland even in the most difficult and treacherous terrain and keeps the Tri-colour flying high," it said.

Significantly, the Panchajanya editoral has no mention of Vajpayee's name while it recounts demands for Bharat Ratna for industrialist Ratan Tata and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.

On the contrary, the editorial said it was ironic that Indian politicians decide on Bharat Ratna and political parties generally do not see beyond their own contours.

"It is because of this that hardly someone has ever found anyone outside his party eligible for the Bharat Ratna," it said.

"It seems that our national viewpoint has been limited only to me and mine," the editorial said.

The editorial also rejected the demand for giving Bharat Ratna to Tata or Tendulkar simply on the basis of their acquiring enormous wealth or popularity.

"These are the people who already possess so much money that their next seven generations can lead a comfortable life without having to do anything," it said.

"Bharat Ratna should ideally go to someone who without being desirous of anything for himself uses his self for the progress of the Indian nation and its people," it said.

There was no immediate reaction from the BJP on the Panchajanya editorial while the Congress said awarding of Bharat Ratna should not be politicised.

"This should not be a subject of debate. The government will consider all before deciding and it should not be politicised," Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said.

She said, "These are decisions that government takes after due consideration and through exchange of letters or writing of articles."
