In Bollywood actors are usually restricted to acting, dancing and lip syncing for the songs.. But during the start of Indian Cinema we had actors who were also singers.. They used to sing their own songs and also act..

Stars such as Kishore Kumar, K. L. Saigal, Suraiyya, and Noor Jehan were known as both singers and actors. The list is endless.. However, in the 1950s and 1960s, producers and directors increasingly tended to hire actors and actresses who could dance and leave the singing to playback singers.

But some stars have sung for themselves in some recent films. (List from wikipedia)

Amitabh Bachchan, sang "Mere Angane Mein" in Lawaaris and has also sung in Silsila, Mahaan, Toofan, Baghban, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.

Aamir Khan sang "Aati Kya Khandala" in Ghulam but only because "the character had attitude that only Aamir could do justice to", according to director Vikram Bhatt.

In 2005, Abhishek Bachchan sang a rap song in Rohan Sippy's film Bluffmaster.

Shah Rukh Khan sang "Apun Bola" in Josh (2000)

Salman Khan sang "Chandi Ki Daal Par" in Hello Brother (1999)

Madhuri Dixit sang Kaahe Chedd in Devdas (2002)

Sridevi sang O Meri Chandni in Chandni (1989)

A 2006 film, Baabul, due for December release, is said to feature stars Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan singing together.
And now recently Madhuri in Aaja Nachle
Kamal Hasan in Tamil movies

While there are various actors who have given their voice for their own songs, there are also singers who have tried their hand in acting...

While searching I found Geeta Dutt has acted in a bengali film named Badhu Bharan (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0296518/) It would be nice to know more about it.. Rafi sahab has also appeared for a small role.

Talat Mahmood has also worked in more than ten films..

SP Balasubramanium and MS Subbhalakshmi have shown their acting skills in Tamil movies..

Himesh, Sonu Nigam have been proving their acting talents too

Sunjay Dutt sang in Khoobsoorat "hey Shivani" and may be he sang 2-3 songs more

( Anu can be mention Punjabi singers, actors too here...bcz I know many who r multi telented)

Anu, Thanks great post the first name comes to my mind is Talat Mahmood and Geeta Dutt from the Golden ERA also one name that is Kishore Da.

Anu you sure missed the big name of this ERA Himesh he is multi talented person.

Will share some more thoughts later.

Frankly in this modern age they should specialise for best and speedy results. We cannot have a Jack of All Trades and sacrifice quality. They should get proper singers and actors and actress; if not, they might as well get Raja to sing both the male and female parts. 😆 Even Himeshji going into acting is a diversion which is unnecessary just like an actor not using a stuntman for dangerous routines. Big B, singing which sounds horrible too. These are compromises we can do without. Kishoreda singing himself is acceptable as he is multi talented. 😆

Sonu Nigam acted in 2 movies "kaash aap hamare hote" and second is " love in Nepal" i think

the pundit sisters - Sulakshana and Vijayeta.. they sang in plenty of movies and were heroines in their times.

YOu Forgot about Aditya Narayan.... He sang and also actes in a few movies whle he was younger... he acted in Pardes and also sang in a few songs (I love my india and Doh dil), he acted in a lil part in Rangeela and also sang the part he acted in! 😳 he also acted in Jab Pyaar kissi seh Hota hai and sang in ALOT of other movies! 😳...

has aditya sang any songs in any films after he grew up?
