With Kasak slated to release this Friday, it marks the return of singer turned actor Lucky Ali on the big screen after almost 3 years. IndiaFM now presents a feature on singers who have explored newer horizons by acting in Bollywood films. Some successful-some not! The list is interesting with quite a few names - some of whom you would have never guessed. Who do we remember as the most popular singer turned actor in Bollywood? One name that will definitely come into mind is Kishore Kumar. Already an established singer he used to hate acting and it was because of his elder brother Ashok Kumar's persistence that he faced the camera. His initial films were flops and he tried to exit so he ended up acting so goofy thinking that he wouldn't be given any more roles but surprisingly the audience accepted his image and so began the success story of Kishore Kumar. Despite Kishore Kumar being the most popular of the lot there were quite a few singer-turned-actors who faced the music and the cam as well much before him. In the earlier days producers preferred actors who could sing as well. There was Begum Akhtar who came from across the border in the early 30's cutting her first disc for the Megaphone Record Company at that time. She went on to act in films like Nal Damayanti, Ameena, Mumtaz Begum, Jawaani Ka Nasha with moderate success. She in fact is one of the few Pakistani singers-actors who have made it big in Bollywood. Suraiya from the 1940's started her career as a singer for the film Sharda after music director Naushad heard her on All India Radio. Then she was bitten by the acting bug when she initially played secondary roles in films like K. Asif 's Phool (1944), Mehboob 's Anmol Ghadi (1946) and Dard (1947). She got the break as a lead heroine for the movie Tadbir (1945). Mukesh was known as Raj Kapoor's painful voice where he rendered songs like Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan, Mera Joota Hain Japani, Dost Dost Na Raha for the superstar. Not many know that he has acted in quite a lot of films which include Nirdosh (1941), Dukh Sukh (1942), Aadab Arz (1943), Aah (1953), and Mashuqa (1953). Singer and actress of the 80's Salma Agha was quite popular in her time. Her debut album' Abba and Agha' with sister Sabina was a major hit. She also rendered a lot of songs for films as well. For instance, the number 'Mera Naam Salma' pictured on Rati Agnihotri in Aap Ke Saath and 'Chumma Chumma' in Patal Bhairavi pictured on Dimple Kapadia had a perfect audiovisual blend. She made her debut in Nikaah and consequently made appearances in movies like Jungle Ki Beti and produced Inteqam Ki Taakat. And now the new kids (well not exactly new) on the block. Singer Lucky Ali made his debut in Sur - The Melody of Life which was a debacle followed by Kaante. His performance was appreciated in both the films and now his acting histrionics are to be seen in the forthcoming Kasak where he has done quite a few sizzling scenes with Meera. Sonu Nigam made his debut in the disaster Jaani Dushman which had half the film industry trying to kill a snake. He was later seen in Kaash Aap Hamare Hote and Love In Nepal. Touted to be the next Kishore Kumar, Sonu could not live up to expectations. Palash Sen (of Euphoria fame) was never heard from again in Bollywood after his Filhaal gave him appalling reviews. How many of you know that singer Shaan made a lousy debut in the critically-acclaimed Daman? Vasundara Das sang Shakalaka Baby to A.R. Rehman's tunes. The song was the biggest hit in 1999 and won her a popular award. Subsequently she was seen in films like Hey! Ram (as Kamal Hassan's wife) and Monsoon Wedding where her acting abilities were commended. Popular Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan is not new to Punjabi cinema. He has featured in about 35 odd movies. He was also seen in Hindi films like Sirf Tum, Shaheed Uddham Singh, Zindagi Khoobsurat Hai and off lately Veer Zaara. His forthcoming films are Political Asylum and Dil Humko Dijiye. India's original rapper Baba Sehgal made his debut in Miss 420 which released way back in 1998. His song 'Aaja Meri Gaadi Mein Bait Ja' became a huge hit. The story wasn't the same for the film. He will now stage a comeback in Thodi Masti Thoda Dhoom where he will essay the role of a villain. Roopkumar Rathod and wife Sonali Rathod played a cameo in the Aman Verma starrer B-grade flick Koi Hai. Their acting careers got lost along with the film. And sadly to say but Anu Malik's debut was cut short in Bride and Prejudice where he was supposed to play a pundit. His role was subsequently edited. (Any prizes for guessing why?) http://www.indiafm.com/features/2005/09/29/727/index.html |
