Here's a write up i once did for him:

This group is for all those people who are fans of Indian actor Gaurav Chopraa. Gaurav has done a variety of interesting roles in different mediums such as television, films and on stage. He is an above average actor who brings life to the role not just from his dialogue delivery and his expressions but from other nuances such as his use of his eyes and his body. His body langauge is different with different characters,(eg. his diferent relationships with the world become visible from the very ways in which he stands around his sister, friend or wife), which is rare in the world of mechanised reproduction that television calls acting. If you are a fan, join the club!


1. Lavanya: Considering that 'unconvetional' is the one tag that has persistently followed Gaurav, Sandy in Lavanya was an ideal role to begin what shall be, hopefully, a lifetime of unconventional choices and challenges. Gaurav played a rebellious and free spirited painter who chooses to not be a part of social institutions such as marriage and family. For Indian television it was a brave role, though unfortunately it was abruptly cut short to make way for the typically nauseating good guy to appear and was revived later only as a negative prototype. The acting was natural, though the tendency to take over the screen and the frame was yet to come.

2. Dil Kya Chahta Hai: A sitcom about the travails and triumphs of four friends, Gaurav played Raghu, a struggling theatre actor/director in this one. His track in the show was a light hearted take on the day to day life of a young urban Indian couple. A love match of two people from different educational and professional backgrounds, Raghu and Madhavi's marriage was both familiar and cute for its audience. It established that Gaurav could do comedy with relatively less effort. The sitcom had a very Western idiom and sensibility, which meant that quite a few scenes had no definite emotional undertones or required complex emotions to be processed faster than they usually are on Indian television. It was in such everyday, informal scenes that Gaurav actually came into his own. On a lighter note, the show also established him as a brilliant imitator of Amitabh Bachchan, the god of Indian cinema.

3. Aisa Des Hai Mera: In Aisa Des Hai Mera, Gaurav played the Cananda returned Samay Khurana who leaves the lustful ways learnt abroad for domesticity and marital bliss! Gaurav's intensity in a Heathcliffish role won him many new fans. Though the role posited him as the ideal lover, husband, son and brother, it was free from the prigishness that accompanies such characterisations on television. This allowed him to enact a typical masala film hero, whose screen presence is so masterful and commanding that everything else is then centred around him.  

4. Left Right Left: In the show Gaurav plays the debonair Capt. Abhimanyu Rai Chauhan, who prefers music to mayhem, who adds a dash of intrigue and charm to a search for spies. In a jovial and carefree role, Gaurav delivers a natural and restrained performance which is different from his usual trajectory of intensity.

5. Nach Baliye 2: After a very successful stint in South Africa with Bombay Crush, a dance-centric stage show, Gaurav came back to India to put on his dancing shoes again. He and Narayani Shastri, one of the most graceful women on Indian television today, brought innovation, fun and grace to the various numbers that they did. Their shock exit and the subsequent controversies that followed could not, eventually, detract from the fact that this jodi no.1 had what it took to go the distance -- Dum!!
