Vishal-Shekhar to replace Rahman for Om Shanti Om

by IndiaFM News Bureau, October 10, 2006 - 04:33 IST

Vishal-Shekhar has replaced A R Rahman for Farah Khan's forthcoming film Om Shanti Om, which is being produced under ShahRukh Khan's banner, Red Chillies Entertainment.

It is said that Shah Rukh is not happy with the tunes that Rahman had composed. It is also believed that Rahman demanded a huge amount as his fee which director Farah refused to pay.

However Rahman has a different story to say. According to him, Shah Rukh and he never had any problems regarding his compositions. The reason he opted out of this film was that Rahman wanted the music rights to stay with the Composer and the Lyricist along with the producer, something which Farah and ShahRukh Khan didn't agree with. However, Rahman succeeded in getting a share of the publishing rights for Aamir Khan's next film, directed by Abbas Tyrewalla.

Speaking about Om Shanti Om music director Vishal Dadlani said, "Farah has approved five tunes for Om Shanti Om. We have worked with her on Jingles for the past two years so we share a great comfort level working with her.

Hence, when she asked us if we would like to do the music of her next film, we agreed instantly. We are putting in our full energy in this film. We are going to create some awesome tracks, which have never been heard before."

When asked about replacing A. R Rahman, Vishal said "Yes, we knew that Rahman was initially going to do the music but due to some reason the deal didn't work out. But, as you know, both I and Shekhar are big fans of Rahman ourselves and have no connection with this episode."

There's no fight with Shah Rukh: A.R. Rahman

Oct 13, 2006

Mumbai, Composer A.R. Rahman has opted out of ShahRukh Khan's production "Om Shanti Om", but he insists the parting is amicable and certainly not final.

"I'm not doing Farah Khan's 'Om Shanti Om'. But that doesn't mean there's any quarrel with her or with Shah Rukh who produces her film," Rahman told IANS in an interview.

"Farah and I go back a long way. We did 'Bombay Dreams' together. In fact, I did some tunes for 'Om Shanti Om', which Farah has now returned to me, not because she didn't like them but because we just couldn't agree on my terms."

Rahman's new policy for music composition is simple.

"I just want to push for the financial rights of composers and lyricists, even producers. It's not as though I'm saying I want to be the sole proprietor of the songs I compose. But I want a share. There's nothing wrong with that. I can't run to music companies like T Series and Sa Re Ga Ma every time I need to use my own song."

Unfortunately, not too many producers in Bollywood are willing to share Rahman's demand for a share in the royalty for a song.

But Rahman holds no grudges against anyone, least of all Aamir Khan or Shah Rukh from whose productions the composer has opted out on this issue.

"In fact, Shah Rukh tried his utmost to see and to put forward my point of view."

Unfortunately, T Series, the music company, which would market the music of "Om Shanti Om", would have none of it.

Laughs Rahman. "I realise I've a huge fight though I don't see it as a fight. It's not like the British rock band Queen, which owned sole copyrights to all their songs. But I won't run to music companies in Mumbai for the rights for my songs every time I want to perform them at the concerts.

"Music companies must recognise the changing ground reality. Today the conventional outlets for music sales are drying up. Soon all music will be free while the performers and performances will be paid for."

Rahman is ready to take on the flak.

"Any change is frowned at. But I'm standing up for what I think is right. Yes, producers will back out. But that's fine. This gap gives me the excuse to work on my private album. For long I've been asked why I'm not doing a non-film album. Now I've the time to do that."

What could complicate matters for Rahman in Mumbai is his selective attitude to the copyright issue. While he has chosen to assert his financial rights over Aamir and Shah Rukh, Rahman has exempted Ashutosh Gowariker's "Jodha-Akbar" from the copyright net.

"It has to be flexible. I can't draw a net on all my assignments and draw up a uniform code. At the same time I'm not insecure about my career. If I lose out on some assignments in Mumbai, I'm ready to bear with the loss."

Farah Khan to work with Shakira

MUMBAI: Latin pop singer Shakira and India's choreography queen Farah Khan bonded so well during the rehearsal of the MTV awards in New York that the pop star has now expressed a desire to work with her and might just be in her next film Om Shanti Om that goes on floor in December.

The pop singer will be coming to India in March next year for a concert and that is the time she may be shooting a music video with Farah for her film.

Farah, who has just returned from the Big Apple, said, "Shakira is so impressed with the classical and semi-classical mudra I made her do for the song she performed at the MTV awards that she has expressed a desire to work with me. Right now it is just that we both have agreed to work with each other."

She added, "She loved Chhaiya Chhaiya and the only Indian actor she recognises is Shahrukh Khan. She is definitely glued in to Bollywood dancing and loves it. She wants me to incorporate it in her next music video, which she wants me to direct for her."
