With tremendous surprise I notice that there is hardly any material about Suresh Wadekar Saab available on internet. But we all know that he is great singer: gifted with rich & magical voice. I observe that he often has been used by musicians of very high caliber like; Pancham da (Aur Kya ahade wafa hote hai: Sunny) or Sadma (Ilaya Raja).
I invite you to furnish details, articles about him so that we may discuss his life & achievements.

Another singer who deserves special mention is Sadhna Sargam: a trainee of Pundit Jasraj himself, she was very dear to Kalyan ji_Anandji. Here is a copy – paste from wikipedia.

Sadhana Sargam

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Sadhana Sargam is one of the well-known singers from Maharashtra India. She is known as very melodious and versatile singer. Although a chitpavan Maharashtrian, she has sung almost all major Indian languages of India.

She is also a classical musician. She was trained by her mother at her early childhood and then by Pandit Jasraj by latter on. She is famous for her live concerts and for her live performances.

She won several awards throughout her career including the Indian national award as the best female playback singer in 2002 for a Tamil song "Pattu solli" from the movie "Azhagi", composed by Meastro Ilayaraja. She was the first Maharashtrian as well as non-south Indian singer, either male or female, to have won a national award for a South Indian language song.

Recently Sargam was among the singers who took part in a classical concert to mark Mangeshkar's 100th birthday celebrations and earned praise from Hirudhayanath Mangeshkar for her performances in Hindustani classicals.[citation needed]

In her early days as a singer, her voice in high octaves was thought to be similar to that of Lata Mangeshkar while her low octave voice was that of Asha Bhosle. However, as time passed Sargam developed her own distinct style. It is believed that Sadhana Sargam was unwittingly responsible for the rift between music greats Kalyanji-Anandji and Lata Mangeshkar when the duo compared Sargam with Mangeshkar.[citation needed] Mangheskar thought the comparing herself with a much junior teenage singer was very unacceptable.[citation needed]

Her all time favorites include Pehla Nasha from Jo jeeta Wohi sikandar, chupke se from saathiya and sinehithane, the original version of chupke se in Tamil.

Sadhana Sargam was well received in Tamil Nadu. She is very busy in Tamil music field. Among the Maharashtrian singers, Sargam sang the highest number of songs in the Tamil music field. She is more popular than Lata Mangheshkar, Asha Bhosle, Anuradha Paudwal or Alka Yagnik in Tamil Nadu , Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, where Tamil is spoken widely and Tamil music is listened to.

Composers Ilayaraja and A. R. Rahman use her voice more often in Hindi, Tamil, or Telugu songs. She also sang in an international production Warriors of Heaven and Earth under Mr. Rahman direction recently and became a global singer.

Some are not meant to be superstars, but are benchmarks of their generation because of their talent. Suresh Wadkar is one of them. One of the few singers whose vocals respect its genes, one can identify his songs without any confusion.

Background

Suresh Wadkar hails from a humble family from Kolhapur in Maharashtra. His father named him 'Sur – esh' (God of Sur) because he wanted him to become a singer. At the age of ten, the boy went to the gurukul of Pandit Jialal Vasant to take formal training in music, from where comes his grounding in classical music, a must for any singer.

Thoroughly groomed in Indian Classical music, Suresh entered the Sur – Shringar Samsad at the behest of his guru. This proved to be his entrance ticket films. The young Wadkar, who had stunned his guru within a year of joining him, won the competition, which was judged by illustrious composers from Hindi cinema including Jaidev and Jaidev. In 1974, Jaidev gave him a break with 'Seene Mein Jalan' in Gaman. But though connoisseurs admire the song to this day, the art film failed to give him general exposure. This explains the erroneous assumption that Wadkar's first film was Rajshri's Paheli in which Ravindra Jain composed the hit Wadkar – Hemlata duet 'Bishti Kare Tipur Tipar'.

Suresh Wadkar also went to Lata Mangeshkar's house and requested her to hear him. So impressed was she that she immediately rang up composers like Laxmikant, Kalyanji and Khayyam in his presence and strongly recommended the young boy's voice. Laxmikant – Pyarelal too were impressed and soon recorded a duet with Lata 'Chal Chameli Bagh Mein' for Krodhi (1981), and soon after gave him hit songs in Hum Paanch, Pyasa Sawan ('Megha re Megha Re') and above all, his turning point in films, Raj Kapoor's Prem Rog, in which he sang all the four songs for hero Rishi Kapoor.

Among Kalyanji – Kalyanji's songs, the Vidhaata number 'Hathon Ki Chand Lakeeron Ka' proved a big hit. Suresh Wadkar has always had Hindi films as just one outlet for his creative energy. He sings non – filmi albums in Hindi and Marathi and sings in Marathi films too.

Style

Suresh Wadkar prides himself on being an original, as his guru too advised not to be a clone of the leading singers. A 'taiyyyar (thoroughly trained) voice, he was unluckily branded as a semi – classical singer despite singing so many light songs in Hindi. "but that was in Hindi films. I was never branded outside this ambit", says Wadkar.

Major Hits

In Hindi films these include Laxmikant – Pyarelal's Krodhi, Hum Paanch (title song), Pyasa Sawan, Prem Rog, Coolie ( 'Hum Ko Ishq Hai Logon' ), Hero ('Mohabbat Yeh Mohabbat'), Utsav, Sindoor, Eeshwar, Saudagar and Prem Granth, Kalyanji – Anandji's 'Aur Is Dil Mein' from Imaandaar, Rajesh Roshan's 'Kaale Kaale Badal' (Anjaane), Anand Milind's Dil, Vansh and Bol Radha Bol, Hridaynath Mangeshkar's Dhanwaan and Lekin, Ravindra Jain's Paheli, Ram Teri Ganga Maili and Henna, Shiv – Hari's 59c Chaandni, Usha Khanna's Saajan Bina Suhagan, R. D. Burman's Parinda, A. R. Rahman's Rangeela, Vishal's Maachis, Dilip Sen – Sameer Sen's Aaina and others.

He also sang for veterans Shankar, Ravi, Naushad (in a television series), Khaiyyam, Chitragupt and others. In Hindi films, he has sung a lot of songs for Anil Kapoor and Jeetendra and his list spans from Shammi Kapoor in Vidhaata to Shah Rukh Khan in Dil Aashna Hai.

Future

Though no longer one of the top names in Hindi playback, Wadkar is immensely respected by colleagues and peers. Kumar Sanu refused to dub songs sung Wadkar in Ghatak as he felt that Wadkar was the ultimate singer of his generation. Suresh Wadkar has now turned composer with two Marathi films and the Hindi film Dil Churaya Aapne. But singing continues to be his first love and he feels that he has miles to go before he can reach anywhere near the great singers.

I am fortunate I lived in her time
Suresh Wadkar

Since I have always been into singing, Lata Mangeshkar has been a part of my life practically from my birth. Listening to didi has been an integral and pleasurable part of my growing up, of my sanskaar.

As a student of classical music, I was very much aware of her songs all through, though it took a few years before I could really realise what she is. After that, it never crossed my mind that the day would come when I would actually sing with her!

I met her for the first time around 1977 when I was working as Jaidevji's assistant. She recorded that lovely song Tumhein dekhti hoon for Tumhare Liye.

But my proper introduction to her was through Ravindra Jainji. He was recording a song for Devar's Mera Rakshak and I had gone to meet him. He introduced me to her. She was very warm, and pleased to know that I was from Kolhapur, a town that was like a second home to her as she had grown up there.

She asked me to send a cassette of my recorded songs to her. I had recorded five or six songs for films by that time for Ravindra Jainji and I took a cassette of these to her house.

She heard the cassette in my presence and complimented me. Then she rang up Laxmiji (Laxmikant), Kalyanjibhai, Pancham (R D Burman) and Khaiyyaamsaab. She told them all that she was sending a new boy to them and that they should give me work if they liked me.

That's how I got my introduction to all these composers. And that's why I always feel that her aashirwad (blessing) is there with me right from the beginning of my career. That she went out of her way to do so much for a newcomer speaks volumes for her greatness.

She has been a tremendous psychological support to me. In fact for me, she is saakshaat (a manifestation of) Goddess Saraswati.

My first duet with her was recorded in 1979, for Subhash Ghai's Krodhi. The song, Chal chameli baagh mein, went on to be a great hit.

For me it was a special song in so many ways -- it was my first duet with her, it was my first song for Laxmikant-Pyarelal, and it was my first song for a big film. You can well imagine what must have gone through my mind -- a curious mix of great joy and nervous fear.

Didi sensed that and was very supportive, encouraging and caring. She advised me to concentrate on the music director's requirements. 'If you make mistakes, don't worry, we can do the song again!' she kept telling me. Later we were to record more than 25 duets together, for Hindi as well as several Marathi films like Mahananda.

I consider myself extremely lucky to have listened so much to her and even sung so much with her. In short, I am fortunate that I have lived in her time.

When we did shows together, she would ensure that I, or any other junior singer for that matter, got the same izzat (respect) as her. This is not something every big name does.

Whether at a recording or a show, she ensures that the atmosphere is totally light and even humorous. One of the ways in which she livens the environment is by her fabulous gift for mimicry -- she is a great mimic. There is this dialect peculiar to Kolhapur and she would mischievously talk to me in it.

Till today, she is very concerned about my family and me. Her enquiries demonstrate a tremendous sense of apnapan, she makes detailed enquiries even about my cousins. She leaves you feeling like a part of her family.

At the same time, she's a disciplinarian where work is concerned. For her shows, the rehearsals are endless, chiefly because didi wants her songs on stage to sound exactly like their recorded versions.

I have watched her at recordings too. She thinks of every aspect of the song, and focuses on it totally. Not a single aspect of her singing remains imperfect. All other singers tend to focus on some elements, and lose out on certain others as a result.

Didi takes a song far beyond the music director's expectations and vision. Every music director expects a singer to deliver 95 per cent of what he wants, but with didi, he gets at least 150 per cent. That's why she makes such a mark. You can learn so much from just listening to her singing, listening to all those nuances which make the difference between just delivering a song and giving those refined shades to a composition which even the composer had not imagined, even if he had created the song with didi in mind!

To sum up, I can only add in Marathi that she is what can be called Parmeshwaachaa Saakshaatkaar (manifestation of a divine existence) and that her singing is like an aatmik amrutvarsha, (a rain of the nectar of the soul).

As told to Rajiv Vijaykar
