Movie Review

Cheeni Kum - 'Cheeni' is indeed 'kum'
<>document.write('Exclusive by Joginder Tuteja, ') Exclusive by Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, May 26, 2007]

The film lives up to its title. 'Cheeni' is indeed 'kum' in this movie because just when you thought that the sugar coated proceedings would actually make you turn diabetic, director Balki suddenly decides to eliminate the dish with all the sugar and makes it taste so 'feeka' that you tend to relish only the first few helpings (read first half) than the dessert (the last 30 minutes).

In nutshell, this dish is to enjoyed more for it's main course than the dessert.

Now let's come to the bright side of the film. First half of the film rocks in a major way as there is not a moment when the smile goes away from your face. Whether it is Amitabh Bachchan's conversations with his team of cooks or the sweet moments with his regular visitor [Tabu], everything moves on like a cool breeze.

Each and ever sequence that has the two actors in a single frame creates fireworks as Tabu confidently takes on Big B in his own game. It is great to see Tabu showing her lighter side after being used to watching her in heavy-duty emotional roles. The two keep coming closer to each other with every passing meeting and never once does it seem that the writer had thrust romance on the two.

The realization of love between the two is also handled with utmost maturity making it clear that the romance here is between a man and a woman, not a boy and a girl. By the time the marriage question is popped, you are almost eager to enter the frame and make them say yes!

So far so good. This is the moment where one would have expected even further fireworks with the introduction of Tabu's dad [Paresh Rawal] who is expectedly not kicked about the entire idea. The initial sequences between Amitabh and Paresh bring on the chuckles but later repetitiveness sets in and the movie gets into a different track altogether i.e. drama. The 'satyagraha' angle further makes you go 'yawn' as one starts missing those sweet-n-sour moments which were the hallmark of the first half.

Thankfully two delightful supporting actors ensure that there are some redeeming moments. They are Bachchan's mother [Zohra Sehgal] and his best friend named Sexy [Swini Khara], a 6 year old girl, who are the two people closest to his heart and life. While Zohra Sehgal is simply irresistible every time she appears on a frame (watch out for her as she reprimands Bachchan for not visiting gym regularly), Swini redefines the meaning of best friends. It is unlike the so-sweet-so-cute kind of potrayel that Bollywood has traditionally been known for when it comes to kids. Extremely lovable and intelligent, Swini's character is a case of apt writing.

Both Bachchan and Tabu are superb throughout the film and demonstrate varying range of emotions as required. In one of the romantic sequences between the two, one can actually sense the Bachchan of SILSILA as his eyes do all the talking with his beloved. Not to be missed! Tabu plays an urban woman to perfection as she challenges her to-be-husband for her 'stamina' when it comes to doing better things in life at this age!

From both music and editing perspective, there is a clear distinction between the first and the second half. While music is extremely likeable as the songs play in the background throughout the first half of the narrative, in the second half it is hardly effective. Ditto for editing since the scenes continue to drag on and on in the second half. Ideally the film could have been cut short by at least 30 minutes.

Balki was justified in announcing to one and all that his CHEENI KUM wasn't NISHABD. While that is indeed the case, one wonders who was even thinking it to be one, considering the fact that the promos made the film's subject quite clear. What the promos didn't clarify was the fact that the film is not just a light hearted romantic film but also has some elements of drama.

It is this very 'dramebaazi' in the last 30 minutes which takes away the sheen from the film. Pray, why was Paresh Rawal required to play a character who is selectively 'Gandhivaadi'. He wears rimmed glasses like Bapu but loves to have his bite of non-vegetarian food. To add icing on the cake, he gets into a 'satyagraha' mode when his much-educated Software Engineer daughter [Tabu] announces her decision to marry the Chef [Amitabh Bachchan] of 'London Ka sabse behtareen restaurant' Spice 6.

The beginning of 'satyagraha' marks the end of the film as the proceedings completely go haywire with dropping of tears, loss of temper, misunderstandings etc. etc. etc. Clearly a lost opportunity for Balki since a film which could have been an ideal weekend entertainer for those looking for feel-good 'cheeni-se-bharpur' story ends up being sugar-free in the concluding reels.

Watch it for Amitabh and Tabu and choose to step out after the interval.

Cheeni Kum New The film opens to a poor response of 20% and has chances at select multiplexes of big cities only.

Cheeni Kum
RENUKA VYAVAHARE

INDIATIMES MOVIES

Cast: Tabu, Amitabh Bachchan, Zohra Sehgal, Paresh Rawal
Director: Balakrishnan
Producer: Sunil Manchanda
Music: Illayaraja
Cinematography: PC Sriram
Drama: Romance/Drama
Rating: ***

I wish the length of 'Cheeni Kum' was 'kum' too, as it spoils the otherwise well crafted love story enacted by two brilliant actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu.

Few days back when other movie enthusiasts were eagerly waiting for 'Shootout At Lokhandwala' to hit the theatres, I had my eyes on Cheeni Kum. The cute promos and unusual plot depicting a relationship between a couple with a considerable age gap were enough to get me excited about the film. The icing on the cake was the fact that the film has been directed by a creative director of a well known ad agency...But more than anything else it was the genre of the film that had my interest ticking.

An out-and-out 'romantic comedy', a genre popular with diehard romantics has been missed by the Indian filmmakers for years now and thus I was looking forward to explore a Hindi rom-com.
To touch upon the story, Buddha (Amitabh Bachchan) is a 64 year old arrogant chef, who does nothing except for two things.

Firstly, give never-ending lectures to his Indo-British staff on how to make the perfect 'authentic Indian food' in London and secondly annoy everyone with his rude, inconsiderate and sarcastic talks. He is so used to abusing others that everyone around him has even stopped realizing that he is being ill-mannered! But that's only till he comes across a head strong 34 year old software engineer, Nina (Tabu).
Every time the man gets carried away with his Mr Darcy attitude our Elizabeth Bennett shows him his place with her equally gifted sarcasm and thus wins his heart. But it's not just him who is the smitten kitten. He also manages to intrigue her with his 'jerk' behaviour ending up impressing the smart lass!

Thus you see love happening between the two adults when Nina starts frequenting Buddha's restaurant with an excuse of either borrowing his umbrella or returning it. (These give and take scenes get extremely repetitive) But like any other story, there are problems here too. Can Nina's father approve of their unusual relationship?
Unfortunately after witnessing the fantastic chemistry, flirting and war of witty words between the couple in the first half; the film becomes extremely dramatic and thus boring in the second half. Also the track of Buddha's nine year old terminally ill neighbour 'sexy' is not at all effective which unnecessarily adds to the length of the film. Her nick name 'sexy' irritates you in fact!

The film ceases to be a romantic comedy and becomes just another 'extra slow' romantic drama when Buddha tries to convince Nina's Gandhiwadi dad about their relationship. Yawn!
R Balki deserves a standing ovation for thinking out of the box and coming up with such a novel subject. 'Love can happen at any age... better late then never'. But the film should have been kept shorter to be more effective. Also the dialogues (counter questioning round of the couple) get monotonous after a while.

The performances of Tabu and Amitabh are simply superb. Their chemistry is extremely natural and believable. Watch out for Tabu in the scenes where she walks away from Buddha and looks back at him flashing a flirtatious look coupled with a smirk and a hypnotising eye contact.
Amitabh is a perfect choice for the film. His sarcastic remarks are bound to make you laugh. You'll love his conversations with the 'fun'tastic Zohra Sehgal. Paresh Rawal acts well but his character bores you to death.

Songs are very typical of Illayaraja. The title track and 'Jaane Do Na' are soothing and hummable. Cinematography is commendable. The film has been beautifully shot in London and Delhi.

If Cheeni Kum would have given us some more laughs than drama, we'd have appreciated the film much more.

Cheeni Kum
Angel Rani
Hindi (U/A)
Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Tabu, Paresh Rawal
Director: R Balki

The promos said it all. And Cheeni Kum does not show anything more. It's just about an old man falling for a woman half his age. But Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu make it look so real that you remain entertained for the most part. The movie is refreshingly different.
Bachchan the chef is fit, but his ego is XXL. 'Thank you' and 'sorry' are not part of his lingo, and it takes a lot of 'umbrella sessions' for Tabu to warm up to the coldest creature around.
The wooing is hilarious. Flowers and diamonds don't figure in Bachchan's scheme of dating, but the London chef scores with his witty tongue and rare recipes.
Then strikes the meet-the-parents calamity. Bachchan decides to fly India, and his ponytail promptly goes under the scissor. That's the first and only casualty.
But many 'traditional' threats loom large in Delhi, the most important being his prospective father-in-law Paresh Rawal, who is younger than the 64-year-old 'groom'.
The kid in the movie is cute, but talks as if she went to Socrates' school. The more philosophical she gets, the more artificial she sounds. But Zohra Sehgal, who plays Bachchan's mother, is a delight.
A little drama creeps in and dilutes the 'sugar-free' story towards the end.
But with a fresh Bachchan and Tabu on the menu, the meal is appetising enough. Go taste it.

'Cheeni Kum' - a scrumptious romantic comedy (REVIEW)

Film: 'Cheeni Kum'; Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Tabu, Paresh Rawal, Zohra Sehgal, Swini Khara; Director: R. Balakrishnan (Balki); Rating: ****

The incandescent Tabu makes Amitabh Bachchan run across the London fields... 'Just to see if you've the energy to do anything else,' she tells him, her tongue firmly in cheek.

'Cheeni Kum' is probably the sauciest, slickest, and most scrumptious romantic comedy you'll see in the Hindi language in a long time.

She's in London for a holiday. He is a cantankerous sarcastic chef who can't take a snub even when it's served up on a platter.

'Cheeni Kum' makes you forget there's a difference of 30 years between the woman and the man. That's the magic of pure acting. The magic of two of the finest actors at work as they create an ebullient alchemy.

Also in this mellow ode to love, are an 85-year-old mom (Zohra Sehgal) living life king-sized, and a seven-year-old terminally-ill girl called Sexy (Swini Khara) who takes the chef as an intimate friend and watches all adult DVDs he gets her, since she won't get a chance to do so later.

Then there is the heroine's Gandhian father who can't stop reminding his son-in-law-to-be of his autumnal age. And last but certainly not the least, there's the churlish chef's kitchen staff comprising some of the most sparkling cameo-actors you've seen.

Unarguably, one of the finest directorial talents in this millennium, Balki just sweeps that age gap under the carpet.

It's hard to decide in which capacity Balki scores higher marks - as director or dialogue writer. Caustic and crisp, modern and passionate, the words weave magic across this intelligent yet spontaneous comedy of romantic errors.

The flavour of the exchanges between the surly chef in London and the serene Indian girl from Delhi, who makes the cardinal mistake of criticising the arrogant chef's Hyderabadi biryani, are distinctly pungent and peppery.

Just like the dishes from the kitchen of the Indian restaurant, the brilliant banter between Amitabh and Tabu is light on top, cooked just right and served at the right temperature.

As the relationship between the couple grows, you sense undercurrents of defiant and mischievous feelings trickling out of the verbal banter.

But then Amitabh and Tabu are that kind of actors. They imbue every encounter on the rain-slickened streets of London into an occasion to celebrate life.

Tabu is a natural scene-stealer and there seems to be no end to the surprises Amitabh springs on us. To imagine 'Cheeni Kum' without Amitabh is to imagine that pivotal Hyderabadi biryani that brings the couple together without saffron.

This intimate, amusing and warm character-study of love and its sudden appearance in lives that have accepted its non-presence derives considerable energy from the supporting cast.

But Paresh Rawal, who as Amitabh's outraged father-in-law-to-be, is surprisingly bland. Zohra Sehgal, as Amitabh's spunky mom, and little Swini give life to the narrative.

There are moments in this quirky, captivating and curvaceous cinema that touch the highest notes of drama without getting hysterical. However, one does notice flaws in the second half.

What makes 'Cheeni Kum' so unique?

While Balki's word-spin takes the romance into areas of absolutely seductive brightness, London and Delhi have been captured by P.C. Sreeram's articulate cinematography. Ilayaraja's talcum-fresh melodies add to the emotions.

It could also be the magic between Amitabh and Tabu, who seem to look into each other's eyes and souls with such warmth that you forget their age difference completely.

But there's more to it. 'Cheeni Kum' is a film where the words match the thoughts of the characters so well that you forget someone else wrote the dialogues for the unlikely lovers.

Amitabh Bachchan is once again back on the big screen, romancing a heroine far below his age. After being paired opposite Jiah Khan in "Nishabd", this time AB Sr. as Buddhadev Gupta has eyes only for Nina played by Tabu.

Gupta is an elderly man in his 60's and lives with his mother (Zohra Sehgal) who is in her 80's. He is also the owner of one of the fanciest Indian restaurants in London and his only passion in life is cooking, cooking and more cooking. He has remained a bachelor all his life and never intended to fall in love until he comes across this lady called Nina (who is in her 30's).

And now Mr. Gupta has his heart set on marrying this vivacious woman, but with the permission of her father (Paresh Rawal). The father however, if he gives the green signal for this wedding, then his would be son in law is going to be even elder to him. Thus lays the entire story dealing with the question, if age is going to be a barrier between the unions of these two lovebirds or will Mr. Gupta be able to convince his supposed father in law.

Delicate, warming and sensitizing!!!! "Cheeni Kum" comes forth as a sweet romantic comedy with some worth watching performances. While "Nishabd" was grimmer, this one is a lighter and a frothier bet. The movie progresses at a comfortable pace and is outlined with a witticism that pervades throughout the course of the journey.

There is a host of talented actors and everyone seems to be absolutely befitting their part. The characterization of Buddhadev Gupta and Nina is completely contrasting. While he is a pompous egoist, she is more likeable in her being. Yet when they come together, it is the mingling of two people who are so much made for each other, despite the huge age gaps. Even the chemistry between Gupta and his young neighbour, Ms. Sexy (Swini Kara) is incredible, and so is the range of compatibility between Gupta and his mother. What is extremely important is the kind of versatility that the director has reached where the characters are concerned. There is the old mother of Gupta who still yearns to be young and wants to live life as if it has just begun for her, whereas on the other hand there is the young kid, Ms Sexy who is battling death (due to cancer) at this innocent age itself.

The debutant director (R. Balki) has weaved out a lovable blend of storytelling, though the ending could have been a little more constricted… (But hmmmmm…, never mind!!!!)…The music (by Ilaiyaraaja) is also soothing and provides the perfect backdrop for a fable as this. The frames ooze a fresh appeal, with the most prominent color being white which makes it actually more vibrant. Cinematographer P. C Sreeram has accomplished a laudable job.

In and all, a very unsullied and fine-looking piece of cinema…. We certainly need more such as this one is!!!
