[edit] Family background
Main article: Kapoor Family

Kareena Kapoor comes from an old and influential film family. Her grandfather was Raj Kapoor; her great grandfather was Prithviraj Kapoor. She is the daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita, who had divorced when she was still young. Rishi Kapoor is one of her uncles. Her sister, Karisma Kapoor, is also an actress. Other living relatives include maternal aunt Sadhana, and cousins Shivani Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor and Nikhil Nanda.

[edit] Early life
Kareena attended Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai and then went to Welham Girl's Boarding School in Dehradun. She then went to Harvard for summer school and took a course in microcomputers and information technology for three months.[3]

Set on pursuing an acting career, she then took an admission in Government Law College at Churchgate to become a lawyer. After completing one year there, she went back to her initial plan of joining the film industry,[4] where she attended the Kishore Namit Kapoor acting school.[5]

[edit] Career
Kareena had planned to debut in Rakesh Roshan's Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai but left the project a few days into the filming.[6]

She made her debut in J.P. Dutta's Refugee in 2000 with Abhishek Bachchan and won critical acclaim for portraying the role of a Pakistani girl.[7] The role earned her an award for Filmfare Award for Best Debut (Female). In 2001, films like Ajnabee and Asoka followed for her which did indifferent business at the box office. Her breakthrough performance of a princes in the latter was acclaimed and earned her a Filmfare nomination for Best Actress. However, the success of her films Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham established her as one of the industry's most bankable stars and put her on Bollywood's A-list.[8]

Kapoor was in great demand after these successes and signed many new movies but none became the wild success of which producers dreamt off. Then the critical success of the 2004 film Chameli, where she played the role of a prostitute made critics take notice of her once again.[9] Her performance in the film earned her the Filmfare Special Performance Award. In the same year, she also won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance for her work in the film Dev.[10] Her other films in 2004 included the moderately successful Aitraaz and the semi-hit Hulchul.[11]

36 China Town was Kareena's first release in 2006 followed by Chup Chup Ke. Both films managed to do moderately well at the box office.[12] Her performance in an Indian adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello, Omkara was praised from audiences as well as the critics[13] earning her a Filmfare nomination for Best Actress. Her latest release, Don - The Chase Begins Again has done extremely well at the box office.[14] She won favorable reviews both for her acting and her dancing in her item number.[15]

Kapoor has joined several touring stage shows throughout the years. Her latest tour, the Rockstars Concert of May 2006, in which she performed alongside Salman Khan, Zayed Khan, John Abraham, Shahid Kapoor, Esha Deol and Mallika Sherawat turned out to be a huge success overseas.[16]

[edit] Personal life
Kareena is currently dating Shahid Kapoor, the son of veteran actor Pankaj Kapoor.[17] Gossip columnists have linked her to a number of her co-stars, but she has strongly denied all these rumors.[18]

Kapoor is also known to be extremely fond of her niece Samaira.[19]

She also recently declared that she would turn vegetarian to keep her weight in check.[20]

[edit] Contributions
In 2005, along with Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee, Kareena performed at the HELP! Telethon Concert to help raise money for the victims of Tsunami.[21]

She also performed at the "Marco Ricci Each One Reach One Benefit Concert", a fundraiser for the World Youth Peace Summit.[22]

[edit] Controversies
In 2005, Kareena was in the news when onlookers with mobile phone cameras filmed her kissing her boyfriend Shahid Kapoor and released it to the news.[23]

[edit] Trivia
Kareena's name was inspired by the book, Anna Karenina.[33]
Kapoor sang solo in the song "Jab Nahin Aye The Tum", for the movie Dev. This is unusual; most songs are sung by playback singers.
Kareena remains to be one of the top and highest paid actresses.[34]
She recently starred in a video with the likes of Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, and John Abraham as a kick start for the BLUE BILLION campaign that invited cricket fans all over the world to cheer for India.[35]
A recent cricket tournament was named after her by one of her ardent fans.[36]
She was recently invited to Pakistan's prestigious Kara Film Festival alongside actors like Ajay Devgan, Saif Ali Khan, and Konkona Sen Sharma to represent her film Omkara as a Bollywood entry.[37]
Many of her films have done better at the overseas box office (the U.K., Canada, and the U.S.)[38] than they did in the Indian domestic market.[39]
She maintains close friendships with actresses Priyanka Chopra and Amrita Arora.
Along with actor Saif Ali Khan, Kareena will be seen lending her voice in Yash Raj Production's next animated film directed by Jugal Hansraj.[40]

Shahid and Kareena again pair in a film

Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, the real-life love birds, have signed their new [fourth] film together. The film in question will be directed by Imtiaz Ali Socha Na Tha] and produced by Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd. [the firm had produced Golmaal and Bhagam Bhag recently].

The casting of Shahid and Kareena raises eyebrows primarily because the two actors had decided against starring in a film together after Fida, 36 China Town and Chup Chup Ke. "I guess, people are deciding a lot of things for us these days," Shahid laughs, "Its mere speculation. Not once have Kareena or I ever made a statement to that effect."

Let's talk of their new project together. "Our only pre-condition was, our roles have to compliment each other. Not more, not less. We were looking at several scripts that would do justice to our talent. When Imtiaz approached us with this offer, we couldn't refuse it because of its novel premise. It's something we haven't attempted in the past," Shahid reveals.

Reportedly, it's a love story with a startling twist. "I wouldn't like to divulge much at this stage. All I'd like to say is that it's driven by two characters," the teen heart-throb states. The film is expected to go on floors in March this year.

Incidentally, Imtiaz Ali is also in talks with Vipul Amrutlal Shah for a film that'll star Akshay Kumar in the lead. "We are definitely talking," Vipul tells me, "Imtiaz is currently involved with the pre-production formalities of the Shahid-Kareena starrer. We have decided to revive our talks once he's through with that film. Obviously, Imtiaz can't shoot two films simultaneously."

Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor are all set to do an out-and-out love story together. The duo will be doing Imtiaz Ali's next film produced by Ashtavinayak. The untitled project is a romantic drama and shooting will begin next month in Punjab.

Kareena confirms the project, saying, "Shahid and I have never done a romantic drama before. Imtiaz's subject just blew our minds away. We will be going to Patiala to shoot from March 15.

Imtiaz has written the script himself. I am very excited and can't wait to get into character. Shahid and I are going to work extremely hard. With such a wonderful script, it will be a pleasure to work together again."

Wise moves

Sources close to Kareena inform that the actress plays a Punjabi girl from Bhatinda, while Shahid plays a boy from Mumbai.

Shahid also confirms having signed Imtiaz's film, but currently, he is savouring the 100-day success of Vivah. "It feels great as nobody expected the film to do so well.

It has gone from strength to strength and been shown in 300 cinemas, which is an amazing feat. I am so thankful to Soorajji (Barjatya).

It's because of him that the film has done so well. I decided to sit at home two months before Vivah's release and not sign any film. I am happy I made the right decision."

After Imtiaz's film, Shahid starts working for Aziz Mirza's next. He doesn't want to divulge much, but sources close to him say that both he and Bebo took their time signing a film together.

"They were waiting for the right script to come along. They wanted to be sure about what they wanted to do for their next film. Imtiaz came to them with a great story - it's a love story driven by two principal characters.

It's the kind of script they were looking for. Imtiaz is an intelligent, talented director with a great script sense.

He's not worked for the last two years even after his first film, Socha Na Tha, as he was waiting for the right film. He's been patient and not allowed money to rule his priorities and that's important."
