hmmmmm. Which gem should I pick for Andaz.

I will pick Koi Mere Dil Mein. I like other songs too including Uthaye Ja Unke Sanam, Tod Diya Dil Mera and Tu Kahe Agar. Mukesh for Yusuf Khan, well that was short-lived.

Movie : Andaz

Song : Koi dil Mein

Composer : Naushad

Writer : Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singer : Lata

For Barsaat I would pick Ab Mera Kaun Sahara and Prem Nagar Mein Basne Walon, though again, I like each and every song of this album

Movie : Barsaat

Composer : Shankar-Jaikishan

Writer : Hasrat Jaipuri

Singer : Lata

The song is not included in the official soundtrack of the film, AFAIK and you would not find it on the movie's Wikipedia page. Wonderful haunting melody.

The national awards for playback have a very interesting distribution.

K.S.Chitra has received the most female playback singer award - 6 times

Shreya Goshal - 5 times

Lata - 3 times.

Male playback singer award distribution is even more interesting.

K.J.Yesudas received it a whopping 8 times

S.P.Balsubramanyan - 6 times

Rafi - Only once

Kishore Kumar has never received a National award.

The first national award for female playback singer from  Bollywood was in 1972 to Lata Mangeshkar for Beeti Naa Bitaai Raina from Parichay.

The first National award fro male playback singer from Bollywood was in 1967 to Mahendra Kapoor for Mere Desh Ki Dharti from Upkar

Lata and Rafi and Bollywood music composers missed out on quite a few awards because these awards were instituted in 1967-68.

My pick from Barsaat would be Ab mera kaun sahara (what a song!) with Chhod gaye balam coming a close second.

Andaaz has some amazing songs but the Mukesh ones come out on top for me. Tu kahe agar, Jhoom jhoomke, Hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe, Toote na dil toote na.. all gems. I do like Koi mere dil mein though, significantly more than Uthaye ja unke sitam. The tune for the latter is amazing but the lyrics have begun to grate.

I am stunned to know Kishore Kumar didn’t receive a National Award. Given they were constituted in 1967 and he was the most active as playback singer post that time. Seems like a travesty. Rafi.. I understand. I think his best work was pre-1967.

He might have got national award/s post 1975 but his stance on certain issues in country probably skittled out any chances of him winning any national award.

Not sure if this is the right thread to share this or not, if not, then I am sorry. But, what a candid interview of Dr. Palash Sen and his musical journey, wanted to share this with everyone here.

So.... Once Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was talking with Pandit jasraj when this song started playing on radio. Khan sahab listened intently to the song and commented for Lata (lovingly) - Kambakht kabhi besuri nahi hoti. smiley36smiley27
