Vir Das was born in the city of Dehradun, located in India. His childhood years were spent in Nigeria, where he was educated at the Indian Language School in Lagos. His education journey also took him to The Lawrence School, Sanawar and Delhi. He completed his bachelor's degree in Economics and Theatre, focusing on performance, from Knox College in Illinois.

It was during his time at Knox College that Das first ventured into the realm of stand-up comedy with his debut special, Brown Men Can't Hump, which premiered at Knox's Harbach Theatre. He was granted the Richter Scholarship for Theatre, and his exceptional performance skills earned him the Colton Performance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Acting from Knox. He also served as a teaching assistant for a course on Beginning Acting while at Knox.

Upon his graduation from Knox, Das gained entry into the Moscow Arts Theatre's prestigious Stanislavsky Program, during which he showcased his talent in eight plays. He further honed his craft by training as a method actor at Harvard for half a year.

In April 2003, Das returned to his native country, India, and since his return, he has graced the stage in over 100 comedy shows across all major cities. He unveiled six of his self-written, self-directed, and self-starring comedy specials at the India Habitat Center, which includes titles such as Brown Men Can't Hump, Not for Members Only, Bored of The Things!, Who Let the Das Out?, Son of a Switch! and VIRagra.

He marked the start of his television career by hosting two shows for the Indian TV channel 'Zoom'. The first show, 'Is Route Ki Sabhin Linein Maast Hain', saw him in the role of an agony uncle. The second was a late-night stand-up comedy show of his own, titled 'Ek Rahin Vir'. Das also hosted 'Top Drive - Getaway' for another Indian channel, 'Star World'.
